Riot said the same thing, and in a much more developed competitive scene than Overwatch had at the time. Blizzard forcing everyone into their ecosystem was not a unique thing, they were copying Riot's successful model after Starcraft 2 failed with this grassroots mindset.

They weren't making a profit anyway, none of these scenes do. To me this looks like Blizzard is forcing organizers to actually pay for their own production costs instead of doing the esports classic of simply not paying anyone and fleeing with the money.

Esports exists because the developers fund it, it's really that simple. League is the most popular esport on the planet but it doesn't make a profit, can't pay for itself and as far as anyone can tell there's no plan or pathway to sustainability. Riot sustains it because they make so much money it doesn't matter, but eventually it will matter and that's when you'll see the League scene collapse. OWL was just that but it happened faster because of OW2 and COVID and the Microsoft merger, etc etc.

That is not reasonable to assume, no. They're going off of the MMR of each team. You can calculate how likely you are to win in chess vs Magnus Carlsen with just your ELO rating and his, you don't need a combined average winrate over some arbitrary number of games.

Similarly, you could be on a 10 game losing-streak and still be favored to win vs someone on a 10 game winning-streak. How? Well, you're a plat player on a bad day and they're a gold player having a great day. It's not hard.

I think this is way more likely to be a game design problem than a matchmaking one. Tanks, for example, are way more important for the flow of the game than DPS are, so if your tank is under-performing compared to the enemy tank then you're probably going to get stomped. This game also snowballs very hard and it's not difficult to imagine that in a low communication environment (ranked) this becomes a much bigger issue than in an ideal scenario like high level play or playtesting.

the problem with this is that competition is not the same thing as marketing, there are better ways to market your game. streams and streamers, for example. there's a league team in tier 2 EU called Los Ratones, they are a team of popular EU streamers and their games get like 10x the viewership of the average league competitive match even though they are objectively not as good as even some of the teams they're competing against, which are already not the best teams in the region. people still care about them more than they care about fnatic or g2 though, tier 1 teams that routinely represent europe at Worlds.

the future of esports as marketing is literally showmatches with streamers and personalities, not competition. esports as competition can only exist if it actually makes financial sense for it to exist, it cannot just be "marketing" as it has proven to be simply inferior to drive engagement than other forms of content.

i have a shit ton of hours on pharah across 1 and 2. sitting in the air all match was never a good identity for her because not only were DPS and hitscan supports just able to constantly shut her down with ease, but none of the maps were ever really good for her aerial game compared to someone like echo (and now freja) who have way more control over their movement in air. the best thing that they ever did was give her a dash (that should have been 8 way so she could dash downward), increase her concussive knockback, and reduced self damage on rockets. using these she could get around the map much faster and make herself a harder target.

Nope, I tried that. Idk why this is happening, but having Overwatch installed both on steam and Bnet seems to break something with the region change. It finally works now though, just not like you would except it to. Basically you have to change it on Bnet, try to login and fail on Bnet, go to steam and the steam version will now have the region you tried to login on. All of my 3 vaults were garabge though, so all of this work was for nothing lol. Time to deinstall Bnet again
