And now the question of our era. If Sunny's fridge is empty, where did Hero get all the food? Did he run down to the store early in the morning to purchase some and doesn't want to bring up how long Sunny's been with no food in the fridge, or is there actually food in the fridge and Sunny's just saying it's empty for some reason? Like maybe he's repressing the food in the fridge, or there's nothing in there he likes, like steak, so he declares it empty. One of these answers is more depressing than the other.
Also it occurred to me I didn't do the secret where you can into the backyard after seeing Hero at the piano at night. Oh well. I've got a save right before Black Space's church if I really want to see it.

You see the outside of her house, and you hear a little about what's happened around her, but you don't really realize how bad things are until you step inside Aubrey's house.
I've heard mixed opinions, but I personally think it's nice of Hero, Kel, or Sunny not to bring this up with Aubrey. That they didn't start a whole "Why didn't you tell us?" "We're friends, we could have helped!" "Why didn't you trust us?" kind of conversation. They had no idea what Aubrey's home was like, except for maybe Sunny depending on how you read into some things. It's clear that Aubrey was keeping everyone in the dark for a reason. She might be not be comfortable with the topic, or just doesn't want them to bother her about it. Or was ashamed. It might seem contradictive to say they're being good friends by ignoring the problem, but it's nice of them to not criticize or reprimand or get on her case for keeping this from them, or offer unwanted help now or later. And if Sunny does know about Aubrey's situation, I think the reason she would have told or showed him is specifically because she knew Sunny would just listen and not do any of those things. If she had wanted help back then, she'd have gone to Mari or Hero or their parents. Maybe. I think.
In the game Aubrey's Mom is completely silent, but in the manga she does talk to Aubrey briefly. I wonder if she'll say anything to Hero, Kel, or Sunny when they barge in. Or how the scene will be handled there since the manga's changed quite a few scenes already. I'm curious how it'll go.

Aubrey pushing Basil into the lake being narratively comparable to Sunny pushing Mari is a hill I will forever die on.

The dots connect. It's just that for Aubrey, it lasted less than a day and Basil lived. For Sunny, it was four years and Mari died. This right here I feel is always the linchpin for Aubrey understanding Sunny. She was in the same position he was, and made the same choices even if the consequences weren't as cataclysmic. Even if she doesn't forgive him, she should at least be able to understand the action. I think.

I don't think I need to explain why this whole photo album scene is so good. It's so good, you guys. Everyone was so, so happy. Each photo speaks for itself. By Your Side is the icing on the cake. It's the song most strongly associated with Mari, even more so than her part of Duet you hear play all over the game. I love this game. It's great to have Aubrey back.

Yeah. This part especially is why I think it sucks that the Truth Album text is unused. You cannot make this connection between Sunny's thoughts and what Aubrey says naturally because you never see it. I think they wanted the whole truth sequence to be show and not tell, but as consequence we lost an insight into Sunny's mental state at the time. I wish there was an extra's menu where you can look over the truth album and read the text there.

I personally think Aubrey would shut down not like Sunny, but more like her mother. Aubrey would have no idea of the truth, leaving the only conclusion being that Basil's suicide was her fault. And the rest of her friends would also feel responsible.
As sad as it is to say...I don't think Hero would be there for her. After Mari died and he recovered, he threw himself into studies and college to distract himself and getting away from it all. I think he'd do the same again, and especially if Sunny also did. The last words Hero would have said to Sunny would have been telling him to leave, sending Sunny to be all alone and giving him the chance to kill himself. Hero would feel directly responsible for that and be more of a reason to run. Maybe Kel would be there for Aubrey, but I don't know what they could do for each other at this point. They'll believe that they lost half their friend group to suicide, Hero might be out of the picture, any answers as to why this kept happening to them are gone, what's left for them? What's left for their friendship? The memories in the Album? It's all ruined forever. Maybe Aubrey's other friends could help.

I mentioned it during the Mari Is Home text mess I said before, but I like to think this whole Recycultist Dungeon shows how Headspace could have changed. That maybe if Sunny weren't on the verge of having a mental breakdown, killing himself, or facing the truth; that if the status quo could have somehow kept going for longer, maybe Headspace might have slowly become more like Faraway. That this whole segment is representative of a turning point, just a taste of what could have been in store of Sunny's dreams from now on. Or I'm reading too far into it. Either way, cool segment.
I forget if the Emotion System can be used here outside of making Kel happy by giving him Orange Joe, so I don't remember if this next bit of trivia is exactly unused or not. All the friends can be made to experience different emotions like Happy, Sad, or Angry, and I think even Afraid? But Sunny has one exception. Sunny is incapable of being inflicted with Happy. There isn't even a portrait for it in the game files. This whole sections one of his dream fantasies, and he can't imagine himself feeling happy. How tragic.

I think this has been said before but somehow I can imagine Sunny making some truly ludicrous crackpot surreal fantasy setting based on Headspace and making bank off of it, maybe a video game, or comics, maybe a tabletop RPG since those seem to be getting popular. I could talk about this moment, but there's actually a bit of unused content I want to talk about in regards to this scene.
The song that plays here is a slowed down By Your Side. A song universally identifiable as Mari's theme. But there's an unused ambience track that I think might have played here instead at one point. The cemetery has a unique ambience track, but there's another version that has Mari's part of Duet playing in it. The one you hear on the title screen and all over the game.

I think they were originally going to have that fade in over the normal ambience track, but at some point someone decided to swap it out with By Your Side.
The specific Duet leitmotif you might realize has some connection to Mari with how often you hear it, and her spirit plays it on the piano the previous night. But it's not really until you hear Final Duet that you realize the significance of it. Meanwhile, By Your Side has always played for Mari. You hear it all over Headspace, and in Dear Little Brother. Even earlier it was playing when you put the pictures of Mari back into the Photo Album. It's immediately identifiable as Mari's theme. I think that's why they swapped it out. By Your Side would be more emotionally impactful than a leitmotif players might simply identify as the title screen music.
But that's just a theory.
