I haven't done the math with gear material but I'd guess it's roughly enough to build up one unit a month
With rocks it takes even longer, a single B3 can eat up two month of Kraken farming. Thankfully we can afford to feed B1 and B2s far less
So yeah, skipping a few units here and there won't hurt when you can't possibly use them in any meaningful manner

More stuff to do in the Outpost. For example, the cafes and shops in it should passively generate credits, the generator, armory, and library should generate battle exp, etc. You can also invite a Nikke or two to the hotel for some heavy advise sessions
Buy a ring, "marry" your nikke, and level up their affection rating to even further increase their stats. Their voice lines should also change to reflect their updated status.
