Hmm, focusing on your e-tank - estus comparison, I think a better method of approach, would be that e-tanks are generally difficult to acquire consumables - rewards - where as estus flasks are given on spawn. Intrinsically, they both fulfill the same purpose, as death in either franchise would result in being sent back to spawn point, and they can alleviate any chip damage encountered during boss approach... However, one is a limited consumable that you need to go out of your way to acquire, and the other is simply given to you for free on respawn - I probably shouldn't feel as bad about using e-tanks, since I had to earn them through platforming challenges, etc.
Only when farming e-tanks should one be considered bitchmade.

Another difference is that flasks have an animation and require either knowledge of the enemies attacks or that the enemy is staggered to effectively use while E-tanks can be used anytime in the menu. I don't think they're equivalent in design other than both being battle healing methods. If I were to put in a simple way, using E-Tanks is accepting some form of assist (that you're required to pick before) while NOT using flasks is actually challenging yourself further.
