The negotiation system being the way it is makes it confusing at times but heavily flavorful. In EP, if Eriko is in the team, you can group her/Ulala/Katsuya together to perform a dance. The character's personalities are very apparent during negotiations. It's more like a traditional JRPG.

Play the PSP versions for the extra content and IS's easy mode. Unironically easy mode is better due to making battles faster, the combat can get repetitive, so anything that allows auto battle to be better is better for certain bosses. Some boss's logic will change for easy mode. The final boss will drain your SP as it's focus on easy mode for example.

In IS you don't need to fuse personas, since if you do the right choices and get all of the hidden masks in the mountain dungeons, you can coast the game. This isn't true for EP. IS is good for allowing you to ignore a more annoying system, but it makes it less interesting as most likely you will miss on most of the negotiation system's flavor.

Basically you do negotiations for devil cards. Devil cards when you have 50 of them allow the creation of Incubus. You can select any item in the game and fuse it with Incubus and it might get some extra stats or a new skill.

This isn't even mentioning the rank system, where you have to use the persona in battle to unlock more of it's skillset. The bonus skill from using an item will always be there at your first rank. Persona 1 has the rank system too, but it has more traditional fusion where two persona cards are fused to make a persona, instead of tarot cards being thrown together for a persona.

Overall in IS it's better to use the main persona line as it removes most worries with the system. This system is the game's biggest flaw.

I really like the synthetic PS1 soundtrack, it's just classic. I really like the way you get a lot of dialogue on every single field with your party members. It's really really good, it makes even just one small section of the game packed with individual characterization. I also really like how you can immediately just start talking to the demons during battle, choosing the different combinations of party members and showcasing relationships. I think the depth of these other Command systems that aren't battle that are actually tied into Arcana and the deeper psychological concepts behind the series is something I want to see in a new game, big time. I really like that demons are just attacking you in the school. I really like that you can leave the school and go wherever else, despite being in the middle of a story mission. The world itself feels dangerous/alive. I also really, really like how characters move around the field in battle. It's so cool to choose your turn order, and then see Tatsuya jump forward to slice and push the enemy back slightly, and then seeing Lisa jump in front of him to follow up. That roleplaying dynamic that can be created on the fly through the spacing on the field and through the turn order is nice. Persona 3/4/5 really are much different in their concept with the more traditional 4 niggas and cinematic camera cuts.

This game is doing a good job of setting up the world and the actual core ideas that the systems are built around as well as making them grounded and realistic. Joker just stares off into the distance to go to the Velvet Room? Here, your party members accompany you inside the Velvet Room. There are many, many things here that just make more sense for an actual, grounded story

Gonna be playing Death Stranding 2 tonight so may not return to Persona 2 posting for another day or two or until I finish Death Stranding 2, I'll see how I feel

Overall I think the game is pretty solid, great atmosphere and cool characters, encounter rate is pretty damn high and it's a bit annoying but can be beneficial, you just remember the demons personalities and then you can just talk to them for cards/items or flee instead of fighting. Battles are more of a choice and you don't feel as dragged down by encounters then. You grind some battles for XP and skills, you use some for items, you use some for cards. It's a decent flow changing up what commands you pick.

Music is really good. I like the graphics too, very high quality sprites and some fun animations. Grid battle system is actually better than I expected. The game really just needs an updated UI/control scheme to streamline all the commands you use a bit better. The amount of precise control you have with a simple menu can be nice for how many options the game presents you though.

Personas are tamed shadows. This is a problem for people like Strega who haven't tamed their shadow but had their personas forcibly awoken, so their personas were unstable to the point of trying to kill their host and take over.
