That felt like a necessary evolution of the fact that if your group had an enchanter in it he'd usually request to need roll all the blues then hand out the de'd mats at the end, possibly using a /roll if there were more than 5 shards. Typically done since the AH value of a blue shard was much greater than that of the vendor value for said gear.

Nowadays enchanter mats aren't that valuable and you typically don't run groups with people only from your server so you don't have that incentive to work collectively anymore.

With Legion Remix coming at the end of this expansion, and how MoP Remix gave everyone an artifact cloak to replace the legendary ones, I expect them to bring back the artifact weapons for each class but do with them what they did with the cloak. You obviously need materials to craft stuff. If you don't have the correct gathering profession together with the crafting profession (mining with blacksmithing, skinning with leatherworking etc.) you'll have to find the materials somewhere else, like on the AH or from alts.

You put in the materials for a recipe and let a crafter make it for you for a gold commission.
You can make public crafting orders where you must supply all materials yourself and can't specify a minimum quality, but they are usually filled no matter how miserly you are with the tip. Just don't expect a full quality product even if you put in full quality materials.
You can do guild crafting orders open to everyone in the guild.
You can also do personal crafting orders only fillable by a specific character, which can be anyone on the same realm, even your own alt. You can specify a minimum quality and even send the order in without all the materials, but you'll have to talk to the crafter first (any of the dozens spamming trade chat at any given moment) to agree on a price and make sure that crafter is specced into the correct profession skills to fulfill the order at all.

The reworked profession system has a "quality" system with higher quality items having higher item level.
Crafting higher quality items requires more "skill".
Skill comes from leveling up the profession, specialized equipment gear, and profession talent trees.
Profession talents have trees and nodes to specialize in (for example, as a tailor) crafting cloaks, bracers, pants and any other slot, or crafting special tailor clothes, or profession equipment, or working cloths into superior quality cloths used in crafts.
Talent points in this system are sort of timegated or locked behind costly crafts, and without them you won't be able to make max quality gear.
You can get there with some gold and time investment, but it's just faster and cheaper overall to pay others to make your crafts.
However some people enjoy the profession system, and you can even make a profit with it if you fill other people's orders and take their tips once you've skilled up.

Modding wasn't really an option last time I played. It basically became mandatory because Blizzard were going back and actually sabotaging old textures and ruining them and you had to fix them yourself.

For example the Scarlet Sin'dorei Robes used to look good, but then they stealth patched the texture file some time about 10 years ago (Legion I think) and they added on some weird ugly looking black overlay over the cleavage. STILL, for what little Rokhan even said in that campaign, he's been relevant enough to still be all through WoW.
