There's A LOT of fire and steel they're having to put together for all those weapons, it could also just be easily implied they're covered in soot and ash. Dirty goblins!

Arcane reliance turned trolls into nelfs and then nelves into highborne and then highborne into high elves.

Its about magical reliance and a lack of emphasis on physical power vs magical power.

Theres also a magical element to it the arcane clearly makes its users personally more like a magical creature than a physical one and thus less formidable, Thalyssra for example gets physically smaller when cut turned from a highborne mage into a nightborne over time by the nightwell.
