i have this code thats meant to check for the ground, but it detects the ground too low and causes my character to slowly sink
the obvious fix is to just move the collision sphere higher, but if i do that then it cant detect the ground low enough for slopes.

For me the point is, the animations should be fluid, meaning not include any jitter. I think thatโs where AI fails hardest, as even the still images it produces are (still) inconsistent if you look to closely. So how to achieve consistency over 8-12 pictures in a row? Also when you add multiple perspectives to the requirement, you now have 8-12 pictures over 4-16 viewing angles, that should all be consistent with each other. Failures in this regard would also be really, really time-consuming to fix by hand.
I think a way more reasonable workflow for AI would be to, like humans do, first create some kind of 3D model, including animations, and then render that out to sprite-sheets. However for the time being AI fags somehow insist on the "create full product from zero" approach for just about anything. Quality of AI stills would probably also improve if someone taught it to properly draw, for once.

Are you using a spherecast for the ground detection? I'd recommend doing multiple raycasts from different points which would help you figure out an average. You need to start the cast above the bottom of your character and it needs to end below the bottom of your character. That way you can detect slopes. If one of the raycasts misses with a fixed length then it would suggest there's a very sharp slope or the character is on a ledge. Knowing that can be helpful too.

I've been thinking about first person melee for my game lately and I really am not sure how best to approach it. I want RPG aspects to play in it but also avoid being too RPG where you miss all the time because of % chance and it's just ass.

Here's a short that shows sort of both the good and bad from Daggerfall. Speed stat affects gameplay and enables skillful gameplay but at the same time it often boils down to a lot of backpedaling. Of course usually you don't meet such a horde of enemies like in that short.
Having enemies go into recovery when hit seems like an obvious thing to include. You can even play with it by different weapons and/or attacks having different amounts of stagger and some enemies maybe taking more to get interrupted. I think the enemies also need a clear indicator when they're going to attack. It is annoying to get hit by something you didn't see coming even if the enemy was in your view.
TLDR how do I make first person melee combat feel good?

Threadly reminder that even gamedev success can be a trap.
Imagine your game earns you 10 years of income. Would you quit your job and start making games full time? If so, you'd have fallen into the same trap I did.
The crux of the trap is the time you spend as a gamedev will count against you if ever need to get a job again. And the ironic thing is the more successful you are, the more dangerous the trap will be unless you earn enough money to never need a job again.
The only way full-time gamedev would be sustainable is if your games keep earning you at least a year of expenses for every year worked... until you're literally 75. And I do mean literally. When you're 72, you'll need to sit down and make a game that earns you 3 years of expenses. Anything short of that and you'll eventually run out of money. And when you do, you'd have been 10-15-20 years out of the job market and good luck getting a job with an employment gap that big.
When you run out of money, it can take as little as a couple of months for your life to be ruined. That's what happened to me. I found myself broke at 45 and no job for the past 15 years except making games. And I'm looking at 30 more years of having to survive. I can't get job interviews, I can't afford to keep working on games, and I'm too old to get into trades. My life is probably fucked because my first project earned me 10 years of income and I quit my job like a dumb ass.
Anyway, the point of this is to warn you: DO NOT QUIT YOUR JOBS UNLESS YOU EARNED ENOUGH MONEY TO NEVER NEED A JOB AGAIN. If my warning saves even a couple of you, it's worth it.

I noticed one restriction with traditional engines like godot that felt like it restricted the way i structure and code things which is that, the rendering is entirey code-less, and is done at its own stage, where the update comes before.
So you cannot exactly choose what to render at render-time, like I could have some buttons to click and let's say I wanted to show only available options, in godot I'd have to go and hide all the unavailable options, then let godot draw the rest.
However if it wasn't structured like that, in my button_draw code, I could check against my I don't know list of unavailable buttons and not render that one button if it was in the list. So, I don't have to hide() or show() anything, i don't set any state like that, I just choose to draw or not.

Bro, I had the idea of making a game that's like a perfect city, where everything goes well, there's no suffering or illness, and you can walk around without anything major happening. But there's a shop in the center that you can talk to in order to get a weapon to kill the NPCs.
So it would be more like a personal reflection of mine on why violence is necessary in a game, and a way to do philosophy through a game.
The message would be more about the player's choice: to walk through the city without doing anything, or to go to the shop and get a weapon to fight. But in the end, it's going to be an optional decision.

Finally got raylib working nicely with a separate 3rd party physics engine. I had all kinds of problems with scaling, through trial and error I concluded I shouldn't touch the physics side scaling because default is optimized, so I just #defined a PIXELS_PER_UNIT variable, scaled my sprites with that and called it a day. In a better world everybody would be safe and taken care of and how your game performs has nothing to do with your basic needs being met. Therefore you could stop identifying with your product and it doesn't matter how it performs. That's like the only mental state I could imagine in which you can freely work on your game without all the drama going on in dev communities.
Someone not wanting to play your game wouldn't be a personal attack anymore. A product is just a product, people either like it or not. But in this world you are your product, your product is your survival tool, if it fails you die. This means you become so dependent on it, that people not liking your game means they want you to die. Which also puts pressure on customers, cause behind every game there's a person trying to survive.
Hunting animals and collecting fruits has been replaced with people pleasing. Survival in the modern world is all about people pleasing. That's why it's not about who works hardest, it's about how pleases the subjective taste and needs of other people.
Athletes don't get rich because they are fit, it's because they entertain with their fitness. Whores get rich because they please gooners. Musicians get rich because they please people with their voice and their sexy music videos. Everything is about pleasing others, if you are not on top of the people pleasing pyramid, you are not making money.
People say the wild is cruel because survival is hard, yet we just replaced it with another hard system. People pleasing often is even harder than survival, because of how subjective it is. Actually without welfare we'd have massive amounts of casualties daily. Actually taxes are theft and it's just normalized theft because the system knows that without it the crime rate would be insane in this system, because not everybody has a cute voice, a cute body or an athletic body or a gigabrain. Also winner takes it all means that even if everyone's perfect, the most perfect win.

>>531625250It should but straight black will likely just introduce artifacts when your engine creates mipmaps. It would be better to use an average color of your texture as the background color to mitigate any artifacts.
But realistically you have like 1/3rd of a texture space there. Find a small prop that is part of the same level and pack it in there. You can use the same texture across multiple objects and just have them in different UV space.
