Comparing the Steam numbers for FF14 and GW2, it's sort of crazy how steady GW2's numbers are. The current peak player number this month is nearly the same as the month the expansion launched. The average only moves up/down like 25%. FF14's numbers fluctuate wildly, like 50-75% difference.

I understood that PoV when other MMO's weren't seasonal, but now that games like WoW just reset all progression every patch it serves absolutely no purpose except to time gate your progression. Plus they do item squishes now that make you weaker which makes it even more pointless. Anyone still playing retail WoW and still wants that type of progression is just hopelessly mind fucked. The progression is mostly in the mastery system (mounts and upgrades for them, etc) and grinding for legendaries for convenience or fashion. The gear rarities go exotic then ascended then legendary. Ascended is only a bit better than exotic, and legendary has the same stat values as ascended but you can swap the stats for different builds and transmog freely. Exotic is honestly good enough for most content, especially if you don't do fractals or raids. Ascended is only necessary for higher tier fractals and other more challenging stuff. It's not really that hard to get ascended gear though especially with wizardmart handouts.

Greetings. I played GW 2 up to heart of thorns before quitting years ago. I own path of fire for some reason, and thought of starting up again as I did rnjoy thw gameplay, even if the story was meh. I think I need the end of dragons, but whst about the two remaining expansions? Is it overall confusing to jump back in after a long ass break? Also, I mained a guardian with a GS, has that profession gotten anything cool?

Don't delete you characters, they have valuable items from birthday presents. Path of fire is bundled with Thorns now. There is substantial amount of content between every expansion called Living World Seasons, they can be bought from the gem store. Skipping them can be somewhat fine for now, you will be confused about the story and characters in big expansions if you do skip tho. Some LW have important rewards like mounts or useful masteries. Guardian is forever top tier and its specializations are great.
I'd recommend to do Path of Fire to get your main mounts unlocked and upgraded, at least raptor and bunny and then go back to previous stuff. Or do older stuff first and progress in chronological order. I'd say buy other expansions when you ready to play them or on sale. Maybe get Secrets of Obscure and do early parts of that, if you want your flying dragon mount as soon as possible.

PVP is the abandoned game mode where devs just let people cheat and hack at high tiers, classes are imbalanced as shit, but if you don't take it too seriously it's still fun.

WvW is in a good spot imo, contrary to what the WvW oldheads will say. A little while back they ditched servers in favor of a restructure that rotates you into a different team every few weeks, which prevents server bloat like the infamous Maguuma on NA, who were up at all hours camping spawns and playing like fags. The oldheads argue that it has destroyed server identity but what identity are they whining about? Being faggots? I dunno, either way you can stick with your WvW guild during these "relinks" but it's obviously limited to the guild cap.

As for the gameplay it's still a clusterfuck of stupid zerg strats. But if you get a good roaming build and dominate, there's nothing in the game more satisfying.

Don't think you can get LW bundle from store anymore, only through in-game shop. They do go on sale as a Complete Pack per season, but it's usually unrelated to expansion sales. And appear one at a time, you need to keep an eye on shop rotation. If you google "Living World Season 2 Complete Pack" or other seasons it should link to a wiki page for that bundle. At the bottom is Gem Store price history, you can sort of predict when it get discount again. Living World wiki page has links to each one that describes what they contain.

The last two expacs are extremely recent, in general everything from PoF (2017) to EoD (2022) is considered the high point of the game. That's the living story seasons 4 and 5, which you can buy with gold directly on the gem store.
Expansions after HoT have only got progressively worse, so you have the best two, EoD is okay, Secrets of the Obscure is disappointing and Janthir Wilds is bad.

The amulet needs you to do a ton of shit in all the living world seasons and Icebrood Saga. Aurora is from LW3 stuff, Vision is from LW4. They take a long time and require doing like everything possible related to those maps including some story achievement stuff. Some hard timegates too. The PvE amulet is "free", just gotta do all the achievements associated which takes a ton of time. Every other legendary item in the game costs a lot of money and account bound and sometimes timegated resources.
If you play WvW or PvP there are legendaries associated with those modes.. armor, back and ring from WvW, and from PvP you can get amulet and armor. Armor and a ring are available from raids. There's a back piece associated with fractals that seems fairly easy to get if you do fractals.

With a 5080 and 9800x3D I can finally maintain 60+ fps in all content except WvW zergs.
In Strikes/Raids it's a solid 144fps.

Kind of worthless to craft the rest desu. Crafting ascended requires daily time gated resources and is expensive. You'll need to level the crafting too. Chest>legs>head gives the biggest stat boosts, so pick those from wizard vault first. Rest of the armor provides minimal bonus increase from exotic. Jewelry and trinkets you get or buy from many other sources in game. Unless you need slots for agony resist to get through tier 4 fractals exactly right now, there is no need to rush and get the rest of ascended set.
Get the freebies from vault and chill. Most of my side characters are in exotics and it's fine for majority of content.

That's part of it. They spent years making their biggest problems worse, and it's at the point where every new thing they fuck up is the last straw for another big chunk of the audience.

The last patch released a type of content that they hadn't added to the game in 4 years, and it was terrible so it snapped a lot of people. But that's a year into their latest expansion and the difficulty level on almost all the content has been wrong, and that is following the story of the expansion being shitty.
But even that's following the previous expansion being a black hole of creativity where all the content was kind of similar to all the other content, and the class gameplay hasn't changed since mid-2019 except in cases where they dumbed it down further, and 2019 itself was a mass dumbing-down to begin with.
And there's no chance of improvement outside of a major expansion, so that's a year and a half if they can turn it around in the next expansion and at least four years off if they don't.

If you read abilities and traits and understand pieces of the combat you can make a fine one. Depends on a class a bit, some trait interactions can be unintuitive.
Pick either power or dot dmg. Ranger short bow is clearly dot weapon while greatsword is power. See what boons (buffs) can you get from where. Try and take a debuff cleansing and stun/knockback recovery skills. Consider skill combos, what can place a field or make a finisher and what those do. If you tend to group up with friends and most importantly have characters near each often, try and take buffs to compliment. Power rotations have a bursty main dmg dealing sequence of skills + setup before or after, with filler in-between cooldowns. Dot builds need time to ramp up the dmg and debufs.
Support or especially tank builds for open world and events are rarely needed btw, better to be a DPS that gives buffs.

You'll need to get a glider from a story to effectively travel around HoT and then upgrade it with getting exp and unlocking masteries. HoT has the hardest mastery and hero skill point challenges in the game still. Don't hesitate to ask people for help.
Later on after you get Mentor Mastery you'll be able to put up an apple over your head that is visible to everyone on the minimap. enabling mentor mode and asking for help in map chat is a very good way to complete events and challenges, I recommend getting used to that. i haven't done much of any of HoT story yet, and i've completed every single mastery available. i believe in you that you can do the same. ofc story gives some mastery, so if some of the unreachables are an immediate problem, a bit of story is a good safety net. i did the max gliding and poison mastery, then leyline, nuhoch, auric. i was also a shitter and got some of the HoT mastery in living world 3 (enough to get unbound magic mastery) then backtrack thru the normal HoT maps ez.
