Dark Eldar specifically target the extreme fringes and outskirts that are afforded little to no protection or oversight. The Koronus Expanse is literally the ass end of nowhere to the sector that is already the ass end of nowhere (Calixis). The DEldar are fast and stealthy, but they can't take punishment at all and if they're discovered before they can get set up they just run away to find something less defended. They got some neat toys from before the fall, true, but their extreme lack of numbers and messed up feeding habits prohibit them from exerting any actual control anywhere outside of Commorragh itself.

I agree. What I'd really like is some kind of "Infinity Engine but 2025", like a solid modern backend with a nice scripting language specifically built for interfacing with it, tools to do all the area masking and whatever else.

The hard part is the art. I've never gotten into how they did it, but I doubt it's the way "pixel artists" do it like one pixel at a time. I suspect more it was traditional media that just ends up looking that way due to the codecs or whatever technology at the time.
Still that would be a pretty major bottleneck for homebrew modules/campaigns.
But, ultimately, better than dealing with the janky mess of what we have now, I'm sure.

There's GemRB but it's taking forever. BG1&2 took ~2 years. GemRB (just an engine with no assets or story or any considerations) recently celebrated their 20 year anniversary. I get it's unpaid work, but jeez.
Anyhow I don't know if it's directly what I'm asking for, more just an open source medium for running games rather than tools for making them.

I was thinking that I can't decide if I like this map or not. The worst thing about fantasy maps is how the slow mechanisms of geology have conspired to make every little bit have some interest or unique flavor to it, sometimes even seeing directly what the intended story of some region is.
That kind of thing is one step up from "Lava World, Ice World, ..."
But looking longer, this map is not terribly guilty of that except in a few parts.

I never got bored of the reading in Pillars, and I enjoyed the stats system, combat mechanics, and builds.
My biggest complaint in 1 is not dense enough Defiance Bay or Twin Elms, as well as general poor encounter design (though the combat itself is fun). I have some other complaints, and complaints about 2, but overall I think they're 8/10 or 9/10 CRPGs.

I got bored of the reading in Pillars, and I didn't enjoy the stats system, combat mechanics, and builds.

Taking the piss out of you aside the game went on and on about the most mundane lore dumps not relevant to anything else 2 seconds later, all the characters felt boring and dry despite often being designed super special and outlandish. The combat itself felt preemptively balanced and going +1% to this or -2.2% on that is not exciting me in the slightest. The game also had a ungodly number of screen transitions and me at the time not having an SSD didn't help to endear it any. End of the day me liking or disliking it shouldn't impact your enjoyment of it, shit as your taste is. :)

I find the standard complaint here is that it's from people who want Ye Olde DnD style where each class has its primary and maybe secondary stat, and you're free to """creatively""" pump it and dump the others, so your cleric will be almost exactly like everyone else's cleric, etc. Anything else is really not viable.

The """lore dumps""" are perfectly manageable for anyone with a 5th grade reading level, and it sets the world up nicely and at a perfectly reasonable pace.

When I replayed, I honestly expected to be reading through dense textbook material because my memory had been corrupted by everyone INSISTING that you are BOMBARDED with 5,000 PAGES OF LORE.

Turns out that it was just as enjoyable as when I first played.
The setting's a little 'vanilla'? I disagree, though it's for sure straight fantasy for the most part. But I don't think there's anything wrong with that. The politics of Dyrwoodans vs Glanfathans is nice, how differently various people are dealing with the hollowborn crisis is nice, how you slowly learn what's really going on is also nice.

Oh no don't get me wrong, I fully acknowledge that most of the BG3 cast is largely irrelevant to overall plot of the game. Halsin is just a fun character and a diamond-in-the-rough who has an actual stake in major plotpoints throughout the game, even if that relevance stops after Act 2

Some people strongly overreact about the graphics imo, I feel like they're basically on the potato level of Oblivion or something. If you can't accept less than BG3 then you're going to have problems with the graphics.
There's a bit of jank here and there but also things they did really well. For example I thought all the fun things you can do with spider climb was fun, plus actual verticality like using Fly to stay out of melee range.
Make sure one of your characters has Arcane or you won't be crafting, like, at all, and that kind of sucks, and it isn't really clear until later. A few dumb things like that but overall, charming and fun game, I enjoyed it and look forward to Solasta 2.

Your starting ASI bonus is dictated by your Background rather than race, and you get a feat associated with said background. Sage, for example, gives Magic Initiate (Wizard), Soldier gives Savage Attacker and so on.

Well in the end I am gonna say that Operative Overseer with Servo Skulls isn't bad but it also isn't good. The main appeal for Overseer as an Operative is Strategic Adaptation for an extra attack but the AP refund and extra attack only works for single target abilities which is the exact opposite of what you want with skulls since it lets you aoe expose weakness then aoe analyse for debuffs then trigger tide of excellence against a bunch of enemies and autocrit all of them for 300-400 damage thanks to precise attack assuming you are using a heavy weapon. The aoe does great damage but there's no payoff for any of the talents or abilities for Overseer, might be worth doing as a non-buff psyker but there's just so many wasted talents and abilities and you need chaff to scale off of for Fortress World.
