Pretty much. You're aiming to get one/multiple of these characters.
The best one is the Shu (the 5th one here) and Yu (the 6th one). Ling (the 3rd one) is also VERY strong for new players, she's basically the entire team in 1 (she uses summoned units so it fills in the gaps in your character roster).
Yu is rate up now so he'll the easiest to get. The others have a lower chance to appear. Aim for the one(s) you like the most anyhow, I just mentioned how relevant they are in gameplay wise if you wanted the "best" ones.

Cuora as the defender, she's very good early and mid game till you get Hoshi/Saria and others

Jessica and/or Meteor. Exu is your first and best sniper, but some stages require or are much easier with two. 3 has some uses. Kroos can be the 3rd, or Adnachiel if you like boys.

Myrtle + Bagpipe (+ Texas) is the vanguard setup I use on 97% of stages, but that's E2 with Texas module. Texas is very good before E2. You might want Yato as a pseudo fast redeploy for some stages, but she's cheap. You might want Courier as a normalish laneholding vanguard for the early game, and he is cute.

Warfarin is very good as a 2nd medic for a 5*. Rare buffer. Lancet is ok as a spellcard.

I like Cutter, but she's not so good. She's alright? You want Midnnight as his range can be useful, and he's cheap. Mousse is ok, deals Arts DMG IIRC and her debuff is useful. Utage is also used.

You might want another single target caster like Click, Haze, or Steward. There are a couple of stages where Durin's Arts dodge can be handy.

From supporters, Orchid and Earthspirit are useful for the slow, pick whomever you like better.
