There were some cool ideas, like the team mechanics or using the Chao to buff characters during battles. Sonic having different dialogue chains for his friends was funny.
But the graphics and sound were laughably bad. Character icons look like they were just ripped from Sonic X screenshots. Low quality music with weird sound effects, which is uncharacteristic of Sonic series. Archie plot, which I had no attachment to. Cheeky cliffhanger ending with no sequel, never ever. This game is just a weird, hilarious piece of Sonic history. I remember when it was new, and people were SO SURE that Bioware would make a legendary Sonic RPG. But here we are.

Despite Tails appearing alongside Sonic in the title cards, he's not actually playable in them in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 8-Bit. This implies that the team tried to make Tails follow Sonic in game just as in the 16-bit version but couldn't due to hardware limitations, which could explain why the story in the 8-bit version was changed where Tails is captured by Eggman and Sonic has to rescue him

He was made to save her and told that was his purpose, and then it turns out his blood doesn't work - he's useless right away, failing the only thing he was designed to do. Imagine all the injections and testing and what other painful bullshit they did to Shadow for Maria's sake. She is the very first person he saw when he woke up and the only person to treat him as a person instead of a project or a weapon or a lab rat. Since his body couldn't cure her, he tries to at least physically protect her. Then she gets shot to death because of her. The only person who ever loved him is dead because he's alive. His creator ditches all sense of compassion for him now that Maria is gone and mindrapes him into doing the opposite of what she wanted.
He failed to cure her, he failed to do anything but stay by her bed while she went blind from pain, he failed to stop the bullet from piercing her chest, he failed to break the glass and attempt to save her, and he nearly failed to protect what she loved and wanted to experience. Now he lives regretting he wasn't the one who died instead.
Shadow had around 3 years of life and it was horrible right away, Maria was literally the only good thing he had.
