Though it looks like you might find it a bit easier to find some decent gear while leveling thanks to the faction reward thing they've got, do a bunch of quests in one zone and get access to some neat stuff from that faction vendor I guess. I've played retail. Retail has good gameplay but it's not an MMO anymore as the entire social aspect is gone. The worst thing for me is that they took Warhammer Fantasy and turned it into Disneyland. The rough, almost dark grim WoW aesthetic is completely fucked by the Californians millennial devs now.

Vanilla is slow. Grindier. Almost a pain to level after reaching level 43 (the actual halfway point to 60). But that also gives things meaning. Getting a big loot drop is something which will actually make you happy since it will increase your kill time significantly. Same with a spell upgrade or an impactful talent point. Dungeons are much, much slower due to having to drink and wait for people to show up, meaning people talk more. The content is far less stressful too, most fights come down to simple tank and spanks.

But there is still a lot of skill expression, both in PvE and PvP. You'll be able to instantly spot the difference between a good mage and a bad one for example. A good one waits for the tank to get aggro, sheeps aggressively, nova's to peel for the healer who accidentally pulled aggro, ice blocks to clear a debuff, dispels nasty curses, gives out plenty of water to the healer as he enters a dungeon, understands how ridiculouslu overpowered Cone of Cold is and is able to kite out and entire dungeon by himself, etc. A bad one will spam Frostbolt or Blizzard, ignoring everything else. It's even more noticeable in PvP, dueling is one of the high points of Vanilla/TBC.

Try out Epoch in a week, just jump in, be social and I'm sure you'll have a good time. There is a level of elitism among the playerbase but if you mention that you're new to vanilla right of the bat no one will complain and likely be happy to teach you a thing or two.

But from what I heard from other players, they complain about rogue not being satisfying in Turtle but it seems like a very dynamic class. Vanilla was hand-made for people like this when it released in 2004 as an EQ alternative. Even leveling pre-WoW required a lot of free time in games like FFXI, Ragnarok Online, Star Wars Galaxies, and EQ. They were closer to early Internet social lobbies than games, which is unfortunately only what you can find nowadays in private server games like this or dedicated server games with smaller server communities like Minecraft.

I know this is going to sound hard to believe for the zoomers that didn't experience early MMOs as young wizards, but raiding was not the end-all, be-all for the majority of the community, even during WoW's heydays. Nether was the obsessively sadistic "parsie" scene, other than damage addons to help progress. Sadly, raiding is one of many reasons why MMOs significantly dropped off because any publisher that put up money to fund a new one kept trying to copy WoW (and failing badly) instead of taking risks with new ideas like the old days. All because the line must always go up. Thankfully, we now have the Ministry of Indie and AA Games to help fill this void and maybe even spark a new vidya renaissance.

Anyway, enjoy taking your time to penis around on Epoch next week and play at your own pace. The leveling journey was and still is the best part.

Turtle has LFG built in, Epoch doesn't. I wanna roll a healer or tank and run dungeons (like I always have), but that makes questing a chore. A good guild or groups desperate enough to summon a healer will make up for no instant dungeon finder, and probably will make it more rewarding.

The original lore is that the blood elves are those high elves who followed Kael'thalas to the Outland. They number around 2,000 while the surviving high elf population is around 20,000.
For TBC those numbers flipped and Blizzard claimed that the high elven population is 90% blood elf, 10% high elf.
