They always marketed Destiny as a loot shooter, even since the very beginning(even the E3 2013 demo) when there was barely any loot and we all did the loot cave shit. The D2 trailer had that line from Cayde that was something like "and there will be a ton of loot" or something. It's what most people are here for, watching damage numbers go up and getting new loot that can help you make the those numbers go up. This feels like Beyond Light again , when all of our stuff got sunset for a mediocre expansion. Prime 1 has some awkward pacing, especially towards the end, but it's good if you can deal with that.
Prime 2 has a lot of backtracking due to the Dark/Light world gimmick, but it's probably the tightest of the trilogy.
Prime 3 looks great and introduced the control upgrades that the other two would get in future releases, but it's easier than the other two games due to the design concessions they made for it being on the Wii, and the story is less cohesive.

I can't speak for the general public thinking that this IS "Destiny 3", but playing through the early campaign and delving into the new systems gives me the impression that the devs knew they needed a Destiny 3, but that they weren't going to get to make a Destiny 3, and this is what they made instead, for better or worse. It's funny how Division games figured out the impossible solution Bungie has of scaling back crafting, still having a chase, focusing rolls at a cost when it came to Recalibration and shit. But basically all the game is always accessible as a solo, unlike D2, which is the complete opposite. The "endgame" tends to revolve around optimizing builds to speedrun content the fastest, since Warframe makes far more build options that are completely viable for all content while D2 endgame content is very sensitive to the current and everchanging meta based on game changes.
