people don't want to watch a sprint that ends right away, and most horses don't have the irl stamina for long races. Medium races are the natural length where the horses aren't killing themselves (as often) but the races are long enough to not feel like a waste of time.

front runners and end chasers are both rare because they need more effort than "just follow the group and rush as fast as you can before the end". so pace chasers are the most natural strategy.

BTW if you're pulling your last few hairs out over pace chasers randomly under-performing in simulated races and then easily winning after spending a clock, it's because your pace chaser had an inner-post starting position, which where the threat of getting boxed occurs. Either invest in the inner-post green skill for boosted wits in those situations, or train wits more early game.

You can technically cut it closer if you have other recovery skills, but do keep in mind that those are % based so losing max HP will also make them less effective. You also need enough Wit to trigger them consistently or you will lose random races to skills not triggering.

1. One of the best Mood boosters in the game, even in JP. Includes a Guaranteed +Mood the first time you train with her, aka in the first few turns of the run

2. Her Dates are fantastic Rest replacements that can save you many turns. Pic related is just insane especially at MLB, 56 energy and +1 mood and guaranteed status heal and +6 wisdom and if her bond isn't maxed it raises it, and there's no RNG or chance for it to fail and give you Night Owl.

As a result, you're more likely to at least like a character when making the decision on whether to roll for her or not instead of going purely off design.
