hunter is a lot of fun, warlock is a lot of work, don't you ever dare to be without shards or afk when someone needs a summon or forget to refresh a curse before it expires, you'll get shittalked for it. Hunter doesn't have any raid wide responsibilies(aside from being asked to pull things) does decent dps and scales nicely with gear and you are a god of soloing things, can pretty much do any elite quest solo, there are people who solo enitre end game dungeons with hunter, it also becomes top dps in TBC.

That feeling of spending months with a specific goal in the back of your mind like maxing out your professions, or looking for that one gear piece you need. Difficult raids that require you to learn their moves, and develop your own strategies. Difficulty based on planning and preparation rather than executional skill. Challenging encounters that you'll need to do multiple times to get everything you need from. (maybe even doing again and again because they're fun.)
A sense that you can just exist in a world without being constantly bombarded with urgent quests that need your attention. Just feeling like you need to decide what you want to work on next.

not quite the same, but Xenoblade Chronicles X is the closest another game has given me to the feeling WoW does. you probably won't be spending *months* on anything, but there's lots to minmax and difficult encounters you'll need to grind and prep for, and the world itself is amazing to explore and feels like an adventure. it has MMO-ish combat even.

Classic doesn't really have any hype momentum anymore but it has enough committed raidloggers to straggle along until Legion, after which it will probably get the axe. Anniversary is a lost cause but I guess they will try to push it along to Wrath anyway, it's not like they have to do any work on it. By the time Legion and Wrath are wrapping up in a couple years, they will probably try to pivot to Classic+ and hope that ropes people back in. Retail's "worldsoul saga" will also be wrapping up around then so there will probably be a major restructuring of everything.

Oh yeah. On Dreamscythe rn gold is like 500g for 10. I necroed this level 70 toon on Grobb last weekend. It's gear score is now about 400 with all the raid achievements. I swiped $60 to bum rush the entire expansion in one week and am now fully prepped for MoP. All profs are maxed, quest log is full, darkmoone faire buffs are active. I'm at Wintergrasp waiting to turn in the Victory quest which scales to 90. I'm going to farm all the mount achievements in the game in MoP then quit. Found a good GDKP guild that let me come as a buyer, cleared H 8/8 ds, dropped about 30 on upgrades, and then they gave me an 8k cut and invited me to progression raid with them. GDKPs will be strong the first month or so of raiding, after that the pots get real small. One thing that pissed me off the other night as we had 2k minimum and 500 dollar incs. I got chased up to like 5 or 6k for two different items the other person didn't even want, they were just trying to fatten the pot. I still got a huge cut and like 6 upgrades including 4 bis. For what came out to about a 22k investement it's a pretty good haul. That's less than 4k per piece. I can farm 9k in 3 hours doing old world raids. Or I can swipe an hour's salary for 100k.

I remember playing a brown in TBC and being fine until heroic dungeons. Heroic sethekk halls was impossible for me to tank with hard cc. 2+ mobs was a wipe and I couldn't hold aggro for shit. This but unironically. Outside of the title and the mounts no one really cares about AQ and never did. In OG wow the AQ experience after the gate opened was a let down. Silithus is a terrible zone that no one wanted to be in. The bugs are the worst designed creatures in WoW and they're the most annoying to look at and listen to. The gear aspect was a problem. The sets and weapons we got in AQ after BWL were dog shit. Only the question chain had good weapons.
