I guess you can shrink it down artificially and keep the terrain at a smaller scale which would give more detail but then you won't have a massive landscape in the distance. Maybe I'm just doing it wrong though.
Why shouldn't I use AI to write a script for my game?
English is my second language and ChatGPT easily outclasses my writing.
It is also million times faster and is able to research stuff on the fly.

You're dropped in the middle of nowhere, you have to keep warm, look for resources, fight with enemies and search for tombs to find relics. It was suprisingly fun and you could play it with co-op. I swear it's not just a balatro clone.
Due to the items in my inventory (not yet visible) every time we evaluate a card:
* If its value is higher than the value of the card above it, gain 1 point
* If it has the same suit as the bottommost (last) card in the stack, gain points equal to the value of the last scored card
Does this look somewhat fun?
the system is still broken even after reverting changes

>>531922821Snarky. Hope diabolodev releases that soon. I'd say i'm copying more from nubby than balatro.
my game is going to use .ogv files as save files, all game variables like health, has_item_1, has_item_2, world_x, world_y, level_id etc are stored as key=value pairs in the .ogv file using vorbiscomment
the game is always saving each frame to a circular buffer the positions and animation states of the camera and all active objects, upon pausing and saving, it pops a now saving... screen, under that it has a lower-resolution subviewportal that spawns obejcts at positions and animation states from the history, and renders the image_texture to a temp file on the harddisk, then the next one, and does it for the whole time period like 3 seconds worth of game at say 30fps or so.
then it calls commandline tool libtheora example_encoder to encode those frames into a video-only .ogv file, then it calls vorbiscomment tool to write all the savegame key-value pairs, then it is done an the now saving... screen can disappear.
then on the load screen, the thumbnail is animated by using the runtime .ogv playback capability, and it doesn't load the system by having to actually load every possible savefile in a subviewportal just to animate the previews, it just plays vids, and then when you choose one to load it reads and applies the key-values to bring you to that part of the game with your health items and boss states all applied from the file.
and each save file is a single stand-alone file not a bunch of messy sidecar files or some custom format.
vorbis allows up to 4gb of comments data, and it is utf-8 encoding so json can be stored directly and binary data can be stored via base64 or something like this https://github.com/jedisct1/d8code
because it is sidescroller and most frames are similar content they should compress well

They didn't think this could be used against them, like okay we're good enough for 2025 EA lets just go make a movie about santa's elves. Its insane really. Publishers can be bloodsucking vampires but if they can put the studio to work and actually deliver a good game then I'll have no complaints.

What is the best way to handle hitboxes in a 3D game?
The scenario is that you have the player character who can have multiple weapons with multiple types of attacks.
At the moment i have a hitbox for each weapon & attack type that activate and following the swing animation. After the animation occurs the hitbox is deactivated and returns to the original spot. This doesn't feel particularly scalable as I could easily have 100+ hitboxes for each weapon & attack type animation.

I remember they pressured onlyfans, because on there there are a lot of content creators and you cannot police them or track their behaviours. New stat screen. I was thinking about it for a while and when I finally started I realized my mind was thinking about 4:3 ratio and I had way too little vertical space. Still, I think it turned out nicely, but I still have to add perks somewhere.
Descriptions are much bigger. I realized that player needs to have much more context to know what is possible and to leave little to guesswork. That means stat descriptions couldn't be shown all at once, so now only the highlighted stat shows description on the bottom. Place for Dirk portrait was just a loose idea but the more I waited the more I wanted to have a visual representation of stats.
Feedback appreciated - is the layout comfy enough? Is stat font maybe too big?

Like I understand that SDL_init initializes the library, but what does that really mean? I don't understand what exactly its doing under the hood.
Am I obsessing over pointless information? Is this veering more into comp sci than gamedev?
My game is very anti-Western. So if you're a westie you might get really offended by it, and by its very negative portrayal of Western countries and Western socio-political institutions.

I just spent half a day fixing a bug that the game only worked in compatibility renderer, vulkan renderer only gave a blank screen. I had to restore previous project version to a different folder, and copy across and reintegrate all my new files. nothing else would work. I think trying to make the splash screen transparent corrupted the vulkan renderer mode somehow but even when i copied the old project file back over and relaunched it still broken. I debugged it and tried different things for almost 6 hours. Now its fixed and I'm back to coding.
When my game has reached the point where all basics of 1 level vertical slice are in and I begin just polishing the movement, mechanics, working on dorky systems like adaptive music, stuff like that. like once I have character controller, enemies, level chunking working, I am going to save up $500 a month and spend it on commissions for 3d model sculpting, 3d model rigging, 3d model animating for my main character and the enemies. this will make the game look good and then it will be able to start attracting popularity. I will research where you find modellers and riggers when I'm at that stage, probably pixiv and using google translate i guess. its crazy what a different good art can make, i'd say programmers shouldn't even bother with programmer art, just block model with primitives like spawn a MeshInstance with a BoxMesh and call that your guy.

>>531979994>In a traditional RPG you kill a boss, get loot, gain levels, then fight a harder boss.I have never played a game with a progression system that became more challenging as it went on. eventually the game alwa breaks under the weight of the rpg mechanics and you start overpowering everything. most recent example in terms of rpg would be baldur's gate 3 which is a game of fun and challenging puzzly encounters until you reach level 8 where you then start to steam roll the rest of the game's combat encounters. same with with its speech deception etc. stats, as the game progresses, you mitigate the chance of failure more and more.
or most recently, death stranding 2. i understand that logistics are inherently about efficiency and optimisation, but what you get as a gameplay experience is that you need to be mindful for the first few hours, and that's fun, and then it just breaks away and over the course of the game you just unlock more more powerful tools that trivialise traversal.
if you know of a game with progression mechanics that actually does manage to get more challenging as it goes on, please do tell.
My ideal game is a single player MMORPG-like. A world born solely for the player. The other players are manned like bots and do things imperfectly so the player can use the "meta" and do things efficiently and surpass all of them. You can turn on or leave off the option for the other "players" to progress when you're "offline". This world is perfectly simulated, you can trade, build guilds and even have simulated "updates" to the game that changes how the game is played over time on that save file such as new classes, item balances, new areas, etc. You can replay with a new file to know these changes in advance and game the system in that "alternative life". The goal can be to be the "number one in the world" or you can play until the last "update" where the MMORPG have to "close down".

>>531980474The first PoE does at least to some extent. The endgame bosses do have quite complex mechanical requirements compared to the bosses in the campaign. (In PoE2 they screwed up, giving all bosses complex mechanics, and now itโs also like you describe, game only gets easier.)
Of course you can play trade or follow some FOTM build guide and mostly steamroll the (non-uber) versions of the endgame bosses. But if you play self-found and try to make your own build, you WILL have to play the mechanics and it will not be easy.
I would also count the original WoW somewhat, first 20 levels gradually get harder, overall the curving of monster stats until the 60 is quite crisp and you donโt really outpace it even with the best builds. I mean, you can outpace it if you run a lot of dungeons, but your overall leveling progress will be slower that way. Also the raid tiers have a pretty clear progression in terms of mechanical requirements, at least if you discount nerfs.
But yeah overall youโre right, just listing a few outliers.

Early game in RPGs was always the most difficult one because your character(s) are weak and every rat can kill you with couple of bites. I had already started migrating to the other project when i saw these override.cfg files that some plugin must have made for some reason.
but the thing is, the vulkan renderer shouldn't go all black just becauses of window transparency, the compatability renderer doesnt have that problem, everything renders in full color just you see the window contents behind the program where you'd normally see the skybox. and I had other lights in the level not just sky lighting only, so I don't know. and no code changes between the broken and working ones i ran diff on the project.godot and the scenes .tscn as well, exactly the same. and I deleted the .godot project, i even rebooted my computer. one folder works, another doesn't, and i couldn't find what was different about them. and even if i did find the difference, i'm sure it shouldn't have broken the vulkan renderer, its not like there should be an option that says "make vulkan render a black screen only no matter what" you know, I just can't help but think if I had have resorted to copying changed files out to a new checkout folder earlier I would have actually saved a lot of time.

there people looking for how to make one array a merger of two other arrays in godot. there is no join or merge method, search it and people are asking, their only solution is to make a series of mutating method calls newbigarray.append_array(other_array_n)
actually at the very bottom of the docs on the Array type they have overloaded operators, so you can do it in the initialization which means it can be done at global scope as part of the variable definition
var wegetstarters:Array[Callable]=[onStart,onStart1,onStart2,onStart3]
var wegetstoppers:Array[Callable]=[onStop,onStop1,onStop2,onStop3]
var allsorts:Array[Callable]=wegetstarters+wegetstoppers

Some new sprites for Dion that reflect the addition of monster pots. Since the player always has a sword hanging over their head, I think it could be fun to use that to their advantage at times, particularly in killing enemies that are in the way. The player would have to jump so that the sword would come down on the enemy. Some enemies might be needed for solve a room's puzzle to get to the end, so for the player to not be softlocked, this is what the monster pots could be for. They could be picked up and put down, but not thrown. Also, if the player's to get hit and restart at their starting point, it needs to be programmed for the pot to disappear and then reappear at its original point.
To add some risk to killing enemies, the player still has to watch for enemies that can jump or throw a projectile, which can sever the thread holding the sword, which results in the player's death.
I also added some "hurt" sprites for Dion. The idea is that touching an enemy, a hazard, or falling off stage would not result in a lost life, but trigger a three second cooldown before Dion respawns at his original point in that stage. I feel like this opens up a lot of space for the player to experiment in their interactions with enemies and hazards, and that enemies and hazards can be made more difficult than what might be found in a typical action arcade game. The only guaranteed lost life is if 1) the player runs out of time, or 2) something severs the sword's thread.
>>531985496Oh shit the Pizza Tower of the original Mario/DK game is here
Very soulful
>>531985124you'll have to be more specific
with the exception of a handful of 3dfx games, everything back then was software rendered so techniques were all over the place, a lot of games just did everything full bright, or just basic ambient light levels with no real light source, or you just faked lighting through the textures, you could bake lighting into maps via vertex colors or you had like quake that had full on baked lightmaps, when you had dynamic lights in games it was usually only like one or two at a time through vertex lighting
i wonder how they sold people on that gamemaker is easy for beginners when godot is designed in such a way that it exposes highest and easiest level of it to you by default, making it easy to use the abstracted layer and being able to hack the lower levels of the engine when you need
>>531985861Gamemaker just works. Godot has you having to fix pixel jitter on your first platformer.

>>531985934I guess you're right. I never did use gamemaker (it is paid after all) but I just feel like at this point godot can entirely supercede it right? It just looks like a less powerful godot.
As for the pixel jitter there's an option that you tick in the settings btw called gpu pixel snap and it just works, but it's kinda hacky. I guess godot's worst downfall is you have to actually hack at some point and beginners don't wanna do that
>>531986135>agdg should be a hugbox not a serious exchange of criticism
>>531986189Godot already supercedes GameMaker. GameMaker is just grandfathered in so it's easier to recommend.
>>531986310then you shouldn't be hugboxed either
Godot if a worse version of GameMaker with 3D capabilities that not a single Godot game with more than 10 sales actually uses anyways.
>>531986173I'm flattered. The game's inspiration came from the Greek myth of Damocles, of course, but also Donkey Kong 3. You're supposed to push DK up by blasting air at him, otherwise he starts to climb down the ropes. It's very slow and it very rarely actually happens, but if you take too long doing so he'll climb all the way down and just kill you.

>>531987112Post your game.
>>531986831This is all I got for now.
>>531984772Three major issues I gotta figure out. 1) The sword drops twice upon running the game in quick succession before it starts dropping after thirty seconds like it should. 2) The sword can be avoided when it falls, it's not tracking the player upon falling. 3) Screen wraparound is fucked. Before, it was making the player jitter violently going from one side to the other. Now the draw event is a lot smoother, but for some reason now the player keeps falling through the floor when they show up on the other side. I added a small buffer outside the visible boundary of the room to see if this would help, but it hasn't.
As for the gameplay, here's how it would work. You start with 30 seconds in each stage to reach the exit door. Each second that ticks down, you can see the cursed sword's thread getting shorter and shorter. When time expires, the sword will fall and kill you no matter where you try to go. You'll need to do some platforming and also blow bubbles to capture enemies and move them in the right place to jump and bounce off of.
You can find hourglass items to extend your time by 15 seconds, but there's a catch - it also lengthens the thread, lengthening the hit box that could sever the thread by enemies. So if a pixel represents a second, if you get an hourglass or two when you have roughly 20 seconds left, suddenly that thread is 50 long instead of 30. This could make getting past certain enemies or hazards very difficult if not almost impossible. It would teach resource management, maybe the solution is to try and keep the thread short if the hazards are tough to get by. However, the more time the player has left over, the more they would get in points, so it's all risk/reward.
