It is interesting that the show introduced chili dogs as Sonic's favorite food and the idea of Eggman having two robotic sidekicks, which seem to be the two western ideas that actually became part of the game cannon. Also, watching that show as a kid gave me a big boner for Sonic and I felt there was something more going on between him and Tails than just friendship.

IDW is written by people who don't actually enjoy Sonic for what he is. Most of them are Archiefags and have no interest in the series outside of it. I'll even go as far as to say some of them wish they were writing something BESIDES Sonic in general. There is no passion in IDW Sonic. All it has done is make Sonic Team look like better writers. Ironic, since the people involved in IDW are probably those who thought they could do "better" than the people who actually make Sonic.
