Should combat be such a focus in Sonic game design that characters need weapons? Or should combat be relegated to only being a traversal option(like homing chains over pits)?

I think it would be interesting to mix Tails' two gameplay styles. Let him move around freely, but give him a gun that works like the mech. Then the level design can be either narrow enclosed path like SA2's stages, or open flight platforming like SA1 and 2006. And they can still make him attack mid flight like in 2006 to hit enemies below him, or with his tails to hit enemies above him like in the classics

AoStH wasn't consistent with this and in one episode they had Tails say the notorious "dumb computer, stop beeping line." DiC did most of the writing and took most of the creative liberties and I wouldn't say that it represented SoA. It is interesting that the show introduced chili dogs as Sonic's favorite food and the idea of Eggman having two robotic sidekicks, which seem to be the two western ideas that actually became part of the game cannon. Also, watching that show as a kid gave me a big boner for Sonic and I felt there was something more going on between him and Tails than just friendship.
