sorry I think facets were what I was looking for, innates are cool too but they mostly just moved passive abilities over to innates and added new abilities.
like on drow, trueshot aura was moved to innate and replaced with multishot. or whatever her skill evolution was, whatever, I'm old.
or sniper having range bonus from take aim moved to innate.
but the facets added more variety so it was the combination of facets + innates that salvaged the game.
