I can see that. I don't think he'd hate Sunny or Basil, it would just be too difficult to want to be friends with them again. It would be understandable for Hero to be unable to stand them anymore. Mari was his girlfriend, and he blamed himself for her apparent suicide for years because they let him believe in a lie. Even if he'll stop blaming himself because he knows it's not his fault anymore, it doesn't change what he went through because of it.

The underlying tragedy of this situation is the idea that why Sunny wanted the violin was so he could spend more time with Mari. She would always practice piano, she was staying out later for cram school, and she'd study a lot when home. For Sunny, a clingy little kid, Mari spending less time with him must have seemed like a horrific catastrophe. So he practiced with his toy violin thinking playing music means he could spend time with Mari doing the same, and then got a real one from his friends. Now he could spend more time with Mari.

All it did was take it away from him even more. He had to go practice with a tutor when he could have been spending time with his friends, and then when he did get to practice with Mari it brought him pain. Expectations from Mari he couldn't ever meet, his fingers bruising and hurting from the violin itself. Fear of letting her down, fear of letting their friends and everyone else down. And we can theorize what else must have been going on in his head at the time. It was all too much pressure for a 12 year old.

Oh man the music. It's such a painful part of OMORI - ALTER that you can hear a heavily distorted voice in the background. A voice that I'm pretty sure is meant to be Mari's from the night she died. A harsh "Stop it!" and screaming are the parts I can specifically identify. It hurts to hear.
I forget if this is something you can miss because I'm pretty sure the conditions for ending the fight happen in the previous phase, but there's one more background change that can happen in this fight. Specifically it adds these four black shadows. They're hanged like Mari is, but if you look closely you'll realize they're not Mari. From left to right it's Kel, Basil, Hero, and Aubrey. Aubrey's bow is the most noticeable detail, but Kel's general shape is also visible. Hero's head is hidden by the textbox, but his spiky hair is there. I believe this is Sunny's mind using the strongest imagery it can to tell him he's only going to hurt them like he did Mari.

Oh dear, another graphical bug seems to have happened and Sunny turned back into his normal self after I regained movement. I probably should have figured out which mod was causing this back at Memory Lane.
Sunny in enough of a catatonically shut down state at this point that this probably wouldn't happen, but I personally like the idea of him using the advice Mari gave him to overcome his fears to make this final step. Deep breaths to calm down, block out the little things and focus on what's important, and keep going no matter how scary or impossible it seems. Jump.

And that's the good ending! Omori defeated the murderer that took Mari from everyone and rid them of this world, the people who thought Sunny was their friends were reunited and will be together again, Basil's probably not going to be okay but he was complicit in the evil so whatever, and Omori gets to live with his friends and sister happily ever after. The End.
I think the understated part of this ending, at least to me, is why Sunny does it. It's because he's a coward. What Omori says is what he believes. He's not killing himself just because he can't live with what he's done, but also so he doesn't have to tell his friends what he did. He's afraid they might hate him. That he'll lose them. It's why there's no kind of middle ground ending where he tells them and then does it. He kills himself so he doesn't have to tell them the truth. Basil definitely won't after this, and is probably going to follow him eventually. Hero, Kel, Aubrey, they'll never know what he did. They'll still love him. They'll never learn the truth and be left with thinking they lost half their childhood friend group to suicide. And Sunny won't have to live with what he's done. Killing Mari, lying to them, telling them this, any of it. He won't have to face the consequences of his actions. Sunny kills himself because he's selfish.

I wonder if Mari subconsciously put her own stress on Sunny's shoulders during the training, with constantly having to meet high standards, being afraid to vent to anyone for fear of letting them down by seeming not as put-together, and feeling guilty over spending less and less time around Sunny.

I'm not sure if it's how this is supposed to be taken, but I like how it's not enough. The words of Sunny's friends. What Basil says to him before Memory Lane, the good memories you see on Memory Lane, the encouraging words of his friends, and what the versions of them at the music stage say.
He cherishes those words in the fight against Omori. They're words that give him strength to keep going.
>KEL: Friends... Friends are supposed to be there for each other.
>AUBREY: I hope you can find some peace... or you know... some happiness.
>HERO: Last time... We made the mistake of leaving each other when we needed each other the most. This time... we'll stay together.

But it doesn't work. The forgiveness, the desire to keep living, can't come from them. It's just too unbelievable that they'd forgive him. Mari loved him and he killed her. Their friends loved Mari and he killed her. He loved her and he killed her. What Omori says is what Sunny believes, and that belief is stronger. He succumbs and loses. But even still, he can still decide to keep going. He can't overcome Omori. He can't forgive himself. But he can choose to live in spite of it. Tell his friends the truth even knowing he'll lose them. Final Duet is saying goodbye. Goodbye to Mari, goodbye to the good times, and maybe goodbye to his friends. Maybe the Basil in his dream was right and their friends can forgive them, and he'll hold on to that. But regardless of what happens, he's chosen to keep going. To accept the consequences of his actions and what he's done. He won't run away anymore, not into dreams or delusion.

I think this is another great of visual storytelling the game does. Sunny doesn't Omori wrong. You don't counter what he says using his friends words, Sunny doesn't prove he's wrong with his own, he succumbs to it. Broken record, but what Omori says is what Sunny believes. One of those things being that he's a burden. He's never helped anyone. He's selfish. He's never thought about anyone else. He's useless, less than useless.
And then you wake up to all these flowers. Flowers sent by all the people Sunny helped these last three days. All with get well messages and saying what he did for them. Tutoring Brent and Joy, helping get a floor lamp for Fashionable Mom, saving the marriage of Sarah's parents, getting a floor lamp for Bebe's family, helping out Sean & Karen, and more. All sorts of things big and small which left an impact. They remembered him, and sent him flowers to show they care. It's so sweet.
Also some of the flowers describing as Sunny helping "over the summer" seems to imply that Sunny and Basil have been here for a little bit. It already must have been horrifying for the friends and Polly to walk into that room and find Sunny with his eye gouged out and Basil beaten and bruised, but not getting any answers for days or maybe longer while also fearing they could die must have been agonizing.

I think that's the case. She was hard on Sunny, but Mari absolutely was hard on herself. She was a perfectionist. Even the flower crown she made wasn't good enough for her. It probably hurt Sunny having to see Mari pressuring herself like that and made him feel even more like he can't screw this up for her. Even more pressure on both of them.

I didn't get the post credits sequence. Ohhhh fuck, I know what happened. I never watered the flowers during the last Headspace section this time around because I was rushing through it. God effing dammit. That is deeply upsetting.
And that's the end of this playthrough for real. I got all the achievements, too. I don't know what to say other than this is one of my favorite games of all time. And like any really good game, playing it again only strengthens that feeling. I had a lot of fun playing it this time around even if there was some major gaps, like the multiple months I took off after burning myself out gambling in Last Resort or playing other games. This game is just so... I love the characters. Kel, Hero, Aubrey, Sunny and Basil. The game really does a good job of making you care, or me care. And a lot of Faraway's NPC's are nice, too. Like Jesse or Bebe or Joy, or Sarah's family which stood out to me this time around. The music's amazing. Pedro Silva did a great job with it. There's just so much detail everywhere. The 6 year dev cycle might not have been all that productive, but you can feel how it affected the game's world and the effort put into it. I don't know what else to say. What a game.
My final Hikikomori playtime is roughly 88:07:03 and my final true ending playtime is roughly 51:27:05 excluding the Omori fight, I'd bump it up to 52 or so with Omori fight accounted for.

Than someone would get separated from their friends by moving away. Sunny or Mari. Even if the divorce was really messy, I doubt it would stop the kid that moved away from visiting every once in a while. It would be really sad for Sunny and Mari, but they'd be forced to adjust and would have to eventually. It would just be really painful, especially for Sunny. I could imagine him calling Mari every day for weeks or months. And the friends would be pretty hurt. Basil would miss Sunny most if he moved away, while Hero would be hurt if Mari moved away. Aubrey would miss both, and I think Kel would Sunny a bit more even if it would hurt to see his bro out of sorts. Overall, I think Sunny would hurt the most being moved away from his friends and not getting to see Mari every day.

I can agree. It would be devastating for Mari, also. She can't even play the piano as well anymore since she can't use the levers with paralyzed legs. Not to mention how many other opportunities are robbed of her, and how she'll struggle to do so many of the things she used to. For someone like Mari, that would not be an easy thing to accept. And if her and dad are the ones moving away, it would be particularly devastating since she'd lose even more because of that. Not to mention the guilt Sunny would feel, guilt that would probably cause him to avoid his friends who he believes would hate him for ruining Mari, and maybe even stop him from keeping in contact with Mari. I bet it could make for a nice story.

You know this dialogue that gets brought up sometimes of Brandi flirting with Hero? It's actually unused. You can only see it if Hero's the party lead, but tagging is disabled in Faraway outside the Recycultist dungeon so this can never happen naturally. How odd, especially considering how known and used this character detail about Brandi is. Than again a few bits of unused content are pretty widely accepted, like the Truth Album Text.

Huh. The well you encounter at the end of the pier section with Mari is different from the normal well entrance. Blatantly so. How did I never notice? Simply entering and then exiting the well will take you to the normal entrance. Maybe it's because this is still part of Forgotten Pier. Like if Forgotten Pier isn't some weird pocket space, this is what the original Deeper Well entrance used to be when Forgotten Pier wasn't forgotten, so they both connect to the same place since the original location was in-universe overwritten by the small lake that took the pier's place. That's definitely reading too far into it. It just feels odd to have these same rooms. Maybe it's just some kind of development quirk or something.

It occurs to me now that Something and Omori both might be Sunny's 4th and 5th fears/phobias of what happened on recital morning and of being alone respectively. And also since that Omori being his younger self is literally him not being able to move on and understand what happened better than he did at 12 you could say he represents being trapped in immature, "black and white" thinking, if you would (lol. Lmao, even, im so funny). But yeah I think the fact we never see the friends' reactions or exactly what happened afterward might be an appropriate ending- he didn't get to know that either, only that he couldn't let them spend their lives accepting a lie he allowed them to suffer through. His childhood and days in Faraway had to end and whether or not they would forgive him this is how it'd happen. Like the ending of Sopranos, kind of. Spoilers for The Sopranos, old tv series about an old unrepentant jackass italian mob boss, but in the ending for it: The lead, Tony, is going to a diner to eat with his wife and kids, thinking he killed off and eluded all his enemies at long last, but gets an oddly drawn out scene waiting for his family to finish arriving, with focus on randos looking at him as people go in and out of the restaurant... Then as someone comes in and he looks up, it cuts to black. Dead silence. Music gone. Nothing, then credits. People point out hints he may have died then that were foreshadowed from earlier, but it was also pointed out that us not knowing was the point: Tony himself would never get to know how his death would happen, just paranoid that it could happen at any moment, and this was as good as it could get for him because of how he chose to live. Though I guess I'd hold out more hope for Sunny to change for the better than I would for old Tony Soprano.

Simehow I have to wonder- does the thing that says, perhaps even thinks it is Mari actually know what she did? Or only what others know of her? And would that include what happened on the day of the recital? Or will it just get beamed into her brain once Sunny remembers? Finally got around to reading this after having it sitting in my tab since the first four chapters went up. I should have read it sooner, especially since it shares a name with my favorite Black Space room.
I feel like I had a lot to say, but it all drained from my head by the last chapter. All I can really focus on is the suspense. That title alone just kind of made the whole thing feel so sketchy. After enough Mari scenes, I was just left really anxious. There's something blatantly wrong about her and how evasive yet insistent she is. There's so many easy ways she could prove she's Mari, but she doesn't. And there's the other suspicious events her existence coincides with. She's frightening.
The writing definitely improved as it went on. I like when in any Mari is back fic we have the friends be any amount of distrustful. It makes sense for Sunny to buy into it because he's really delusional by the start of the game's events, or desperate to believe it's her. Although I think Aubrey getting to the point of wildly swinging her nail bat aimlessly like Mari's some kind of feral wolf waiting to sink her fangs into her at the first sign of weakness was beyond goofy. I liked how the scene played out besides that. Kel's being super suspect and thinking about his friends was a nice part. Hero was cool..
I liked Old Beardy's scenes. He really stands out with his more superstitious dialogue in Omori, so it's nice to see him get some presence. He's also Pluto's inspiration, so that's extra cool points for Old Beardy. Not that it'll be relevant here, I imagine.
That's my ramble. I've liked what I read so far.

I'm suddenly remembering a dream I had. I think there were a bunch of Omori's trying to overrun me and some people I can't remember. It's such a vague memory now, I remember towards the end i was hanging from some fake or super small moon in space and there were like, a small horde of Omori's trying to get us to some degree. I think they had knives, too. It played out very much like a cartoon. We were saved by some dude riding a flying van with multiple windows. I was barely hanging on to the floating moon, seconds away from falling a very far distance. I should have written the dream down when I had the chance.

I'm trying out that Mari Is Home mod, not to be confused with the Mari Is Home fic further up the thread, and I can't believe applying a Juice cost to Calm Down, Focus, and Persist set me off as much as it did.
All it does is made Focus and Persist not worth using in my eyes. And they just give Sunny a move that fully restores his Juice for free anyways, so it's odd change. It seems like they did it to trip you up in fights that inflict Fear on Sunny because if you don't have the Juice for Calm Down, you lose. Which seems like something that could happen in the first combat encounter I experienced. It makes the other moves even less worth using because what if you lose a fight because of that? I guess it's an added layer of strategy to fights, which I suppose is good? Focus also seems to have been nerfed, but that would require actual testing to determine. At least Persist got a defense stat boost added to it. I suppose this whole thing's something I just need to warm up to. It's only been 30 minutes.

That would probably depend on if Headspace to Dark World conversion happens. Dark World's are based on locations, while Headspace is Sunny's imagination. I doubt Omori would be Sunny's Omori, it would be a piano Darkner. Or maybe it would stay a piano like how the the church's organ stayed an organ, or the couch Susie and Kris were sleeping on became a sleeping couch. I doubt Headspace would have much of an influence on a Dark World. They're just two very different things. But who knows. The creator does have an effect on Dark World creation, so maybe that could influence it. Like maybe Sunny could create a Dark World more in line with Headspace. Depending on where Deltarune's story goes, we might only have two or three examples of what differing Dark World can be like. So it's hard to say. I don't know.

The piano is probably one of the few pieces of furniture that Sunny has unpacked, and it used be one of his family's most precious possessions, so most likely a Dark World inside Sunny's house would have the piano as the “Boss” of the area. Consider that in the Dark World, the difference between an object becoming a darkener or just a normal object in the Dark World is whether the object in question was treated as if it were a living being at some point, whether you were talking directly to it or simply taking special care of the object (or at least, that's how I understood it).
