The problem with most Japanese self insert characters is that they are not proper blank slates, they have a very basic personality and only offer a couple of options, maybe three if you are lucky and they are usually pretty similar. So rather than a proper self insert you just get some generic guy that you have already seen a thousand times over whose reactions you rarely, if ever have a say in. I think a proper self insert character is difficult to do without the game being very dynamic and complex. Closest I can think of would be those old CRPGs (they're not Japanese though) where they give you tons of options that actually affect the story and your relationships, but even that is still limited. It's no surprise Japanese games don't have proper blank slates either, because it's just too difficult.

My LilyNoire commission was like $300+, but that was commissioned over three years ago, so that was before the big AI boom and artists weren't as desperate for comms as they are now with the advent of AI generation.

I used to be obsessed with the idea of having artists draw my personally-curated fantasies and making them reality, but then I stopped after the constant commissions put me in a financial hole which took forever to climb myself back out of. As appealing as the idea was, I would much rather spend it on material possessions or even expensive restaurants and food than commissions anymore.

They're just pictures, and having to pay a ton of money for what is a gamble on the artist you hired bringing your fantasy into reality in the way you want it is too much of a risk, especially if you're very picky but you're afraid of giving them constant feedback on changes they could do or things they could make better because it makes you seem like a stubborn bitch.

Was very responsive when talking about the commission at the start, agreed on payment and plan, sent in the first half of the payment... and then nothing for a month. If you don't want to gamble, you'd have to look for an artist who's used to drawing the character you want and the scenario you want. For me personally, knowing how to draw the character is important. If they've never drawn the character but if you still want to comm them then I suggest going for a cheaper sketch option (if they don't offer that then I wouldn't comm them) first just to see how they'd draw them. Doing anything else is a gamble.

There's not always someone fitting all requirements. If I want a Uni pregnancy pic, I have to choose between people who've drawn Uni or Neptunia a lot and people who've drawn pregnancy a lot.
