Kind of want to make a muscle wizard game now.
i dont believe in my ideas or myself
my wishlists grow slowly, but even 1 per day is one more compared to yesterday.
>>532124397You will never make a game
>>532124518if your game is failing to pull wishlists then you should look at why that is
most likely your game has shit appeal
>>532124397>muscle wizardso a dude who goes to the gym
Really happy with this workflow.
It's almost perfect.
The only issue is that it doesnt work to generate more than one sprite.

>>532124973Game jams never made sense to me. If you're smart enough to make a game in 2 weeks, of course not polished, but still. Then just make a game. It seems more like masturbation to me. But have fun.
>>532124968I'm saving it for a few days from now, I'm serious. It's not done yet but it should be soon. Although I am procrastinating and should get back to work.
>>532124973You need a theme and a short deadline before DD.
>>532125293Limitations of a game jam can force you to push yourself and become more creative. It can help you make a game you would have never thought of if you just did it quietly by yourself with infinite time ahead of you. It can also serve as a practical way of polishing your game development skills.
It's not for every type of person though. It wouldn't be a good fit for someone like Toby Fox, but it was a good fit for the devs of Pseudoregalia and Loop Hero.
>>532125379imagine thinking humans have any purpose in creative work after seeing this masterpiece a machine came up with in a tenth of a second.
I vaguely remember someone posting this a while ago, a link to a (Team fortress 2?) article/tutorial thing that talked about keeping a consistent style in the art but I didn't save the link, that ring a bell for anyone?
>>532125642Yeah, but itโs not really true. Look at Overwatch which contrasts TF2.

>>532125606There is a game listed in the OP links as being made by agdg, which is called "GIMMIKO"
I remember I was doing the GMTK 2022 jam when I was competing against this game, I failed ofc but anyway the point is I wanted to say, game jams were the only times I was actually able to make anything significant in my life. These days I struggle so hard to work on my current project. When I did jams the sense of urgency was there, I felt like if I failed the jam my work would have been wasted if no one saw it. Game jams are good for getting you to do something period, it's not about "I'm so good I can make games in super short periods of time" rush and urgency can get anyone to do that

What type of game is going to be popular in 2-3 years?
You see all these one hit wonder FOTM games which capitalize on dragging up forgotten genres and combining them with friendslop and then the eventual wave of copycats afterwards that fail to reach success because don't understand that they missed the boat. Why don't we identify future trends instead of chasing current ones?

>13 year old game
>still getting 30k new purchases a week
>still releasing DLCs
that's the kind of game I want to make.
>>532127543The last one was pretty good
I'm a stickler for getting details right, but man is this a lot to take in. I'm trying to get downtown San Francisco, particularly Market Street and maybe some nearby streets with smaller buildings. It's gonna be gorgeous if it comes out how I want.
>>532127903Then you're 13 years late
>>532127543ok now ask it to describe gameplay.
>>532127945Here's my WIP from yesterday. Obviously this ain't good enough and I was winging it. I'm gonna have to get out some graph paper to figure this out. Part of the issue is I'm torn on whether to have Market Street be the main focus because of all the signage and neon fun, or to have a seedier looking neighborhood with the smaller shops.
This is for G-Man, which I'm planning to be an arcade action game with point and click shooting. This is going to be a tough, tough project, but I'm ready for it.
>>532127467>Those trends are set by games the players didn't even know they wanted until they got to play them.Yeah but they don't come out of nothing, some one thought it would be a good idea 3 years ago and invested their time into making it real. One thing is for certain, clone games that try to emulate the success of one of these hits will never make it.
In the case of schedule 1 a GTA+breaking bad mashup was pretty obvious, but no one chased the idea because GTA was still big and relevant. There's this sweet spot I think where an old genre has just been forgotten and players need a break from it for a few years until it resurges, that's when you need to start your development so that you'll hit release just when people want it again.
Redpill: Most /agdg/ games suck because a lot of anons only consume video games and anime and never branch out. When you only know how to think about things in the context of other video games, you can only make an ouroboros of slop.
>>532128356True. It's like fantasy authors who only read other fantasy authors. The writing and tropes become inbred
>>532128356That's true of society at large though, everyone is consuming and shitting out the same garbage through the echochamber of the curated internet.
>>532128203it just wants gay shit like "muscle magic", ai can't comprehend a great wizard who just happens to be jacked af
>>532128209your game's world is as seperate from your inspirations as you need it to be, so it still has to serve the gameplay narrative as opposted to the story narrative. anyways good luck
>>532128356That's no excuse, derivative things can be good.
>>532127960Good is subjective.
>have game dev skills but don't have video editing skills
>struggling to make my trailer, splicing videos together, fades to black, changing scenes appropriately, etc. literally have to google every step
>realize I can just use my gamedev skills to build the entire trailer as a scene in my game where I already know how to do stuff
>just script everything, run the scene, and record the whole thing as one uninterrupted video
I'm so smart my head hurts.
>>532128356True but I don't think the people who are making this mistake can do anything about it. They are NPC's with no interests. They aren't going to just start consuming great works of literature to improve video games. They are slave minded to begin with. They don't even know the value of education. They think the value of education is a diploma and a job.

Believe it or not, players (especially of strategy games) like to be challenged a little bit and if the solution always is "spam unit X" they will be a tad disappointed
>>532129041"Subjective" doesn't mean "everybody has a different opinion" though. There is such a thing as a consensus, AKA when many people's subjective opinions are the same.

Idea for a game.
You find out your ex got pregnant and for revenge, you stage an incident where she gets a miscarriage.
The game revolves around you planning traps and making it seem like an accident.
The main goals are.
>Make the miscarriage successful
>Make sure you don't get caught
>Make sure she lives so she gets to witness the loss of her baby
The game has 2 health bars, one for your ex and another for the baby.
Each level takes place in different locations and revolve around the creative ways you get your ex girlfriend to lose her baby and make it seem like an accident.

The graphics for a bonus menu mechanic is done, I'll make actual code for it tomorrow. But I like how it looks with the smaller animations I added.
Basically what it's going to be is an option in the main menu to get some advice/tips/tricks along with some flavor. The graphic(s) is going to be used for something much later for something else too with an option for one of the characters during the trial as an exclusive character mechanic.

The "hero" you train is basically played in roguelite style and when he dies, he gets sent to an arena and fights with other players heroes with similar ranking, and the winner gets points he can use to upgrade future runs.

Start by making a first person tile based movement system.
Then you can make a basic character and stat system.
Then make a combat system that uses those characters and stats.
Then you can combine it with the first person controller and add some random chance for a combat encounter when you take a step.
Congrats you have a blobber.
I like the roller derby/rollerblade mario kart wth sexy 80's chicks in leggings idea from a few threads ago and think it would be great with the gatcha formula. Would need great character designers and 3D modellers though.
Do you think aggies could collab on a gatcha? Are there enough talented character artists here? Revenue split would be based on how many characters designs you make (must be voted in unanimously by the other devs to ensure quality), with bonus shares for designs that get more fan art made of them.
Maybe there's light melee combat and each skater has a unique melee weapon like how the girls in Blue Archive have guns, so you have another distinctive thing to add to the character design.
Characters would have:
>unique personality
>club affiliation (gear heads, atheletes, crafters, artists, nerd gamers, laboratory scientists, etc.)
>unique style (goth, prep, punk, loli, hag, genki, tsundere, etc.)
>unique melee weapon or grenade/flash/smoke bomb, etc.
Would be a lot of work writing up and polishing and making key art for the VN dating sim parts for each girl.
likely wont go anywhere but this would print money if done well

grid

๐
hello agdgies, I have a question about grids.
currently I have two dimensional grid as base of game movement, I want to add height. Now, I don't want making moving up the whole height free or even always to be possible yet still give characters ability to move up in height.
I thought about two solutions, either add a "ramp" which is half a height or just make all characters occupy two positions in grid(so height two), in this case ramp blocks would occupy whole single grid position.
What do you think is most logical way to solve that?

>>532147626I hope you submit to DD soon.
>>532147591I'm referring to all the bedroom boys that became rich from some mediocre slop.
>>532147590My recommendation: Treat your world as a 3D grid, where each (x, y) has a height (z), and define movement rules accordingly. Ramps can be special tiles that allow movement up or down 1 unit, while flat tiles donโt. That gives you clarity and modularity, and you can still make it feel โ2Dโ visually if needed.
>>532147590Both ideas seem reasonably, sorry, no further insight to give.
>>532142298Glad you liked the idea but I'm having trouble coming up with the hook of the game (besides the sexy chicks). Unfortunately, I THINK it requires some decent graphical fidelity and lots of 3D modeling for clothing and styles. Which would be a ton of work.
Going with low fidelity (e.g. PS1) or blocky art and it rapidly loses all its appeal and becomes a boring roller blading game. Maybe it could be some sort of racing RPG in a retro-futuristic setting? Or maybe just a sexier Jet Set Radio? Or maybe a cool arcade racer in the vein of SSX?

About 700 coom games in the week around your release.

Also, not only are you unable to sell your game on Steam but you can't even get any money through Patreon or any other service dependent on global payment providers :)

No money, no social kudos except from other degenerates online, your family would disown you if they found out what you were making, all to produce a game that your braindamaged audience will forget after they've masturbated. >>532156170I'm trying to get something like RCT terrain. I can see why 3d is often recommended for this type of thing.
The terrain is AoE2 is pretty brutal, especially when you're trying to wall on a slope.
I'm was thinking of making slopes unbuildable, requiring you to flatten the terrain first. It would solve the issue of trying to build on terrain sloping away from the camera (opposite side of hills obscured by the perspective)
Having the elevations as cliffs with dedicated elevation changing ramps like in SCBW is definitely a good solution but I don't think it would work for my purposes.

Hey anons, just wanted to share a project Iโve been working on with a buddy for the past ~9 months. Itโs a racing game weโre about to drop on Steam (link at the bottom if you wanna check it out). He handled most of the programming, and I did the level design. First time making a game, so Iโm pretty hyped (and kinda nervous) to finally put something out there.
Itโs a pretty simple conceptโno grindy BS or sweaty mechanics. Just pick a car, race against bots or friends, unlock more cars as you go. Weโve got 24 cars right now, each with different stats, and 5 maps (more in the works). You can mess with weather settings, time of day, etc. It also supports co-op through Steam lobbies if you wanna chill and race with friends.
I picked up most of this through Unreal and Blender, with a lot of help from my friend. Still new to all this, but I had a blast working on the level designโjust building whatever came to mind and making it playable.
Anyway, just wanted to put this out there and see what you guys think. Feedback, ideas, insultsโhit me.
Cheers.

>>532161010PEELING WHAT?1
>>532112780Video games are complex multidisciplinary multimedia projects. To learn video game design and fundamentals, you need to learn design and fundamentals in all of the relevant fields including, but not limited to, gameplay design, graphical design, narrative design, sound design, etc. All of these should ideally add to and enhance each other, rather than exist independently as they frequently do in those "bad" games that feel off.
Design is the hardest thing to learn in any field, and there's really no definitive "best way" to learn how to design. To become good at design, you need to learn the as many options available within your design space as humanly possible. The problem is that these options are infinite, as people constantly come up with new tools and techniques, so you also need to be constantly learning.
The typical design process is to define goals, research various way to achieve those goals, and then choose between which of those methods best fits your constraints. A common problem that I see here at /agdg/ is that too many gamedevs are designing for the wrong goals. A video game designed for self-satisfaction or for (You)s and click on DD will be very different from a game that is designed explicitly to reach 1k+ or even 10k+ reviews on Steam.
Generally, my advice would be to keep an open mind (i.e. be a green goat) and never stop learning and improving.
>>532160093>what is gmod to you?Being able to use the existing models, textures from half life 2.
The focus staying on mods instead of game modes.
I know it might not feel like a change, but In my humble opinion it will undermine any kind of creativity due to lack of constraints. If something is just an engine, you will not get mods.
I think over the next decade you will see magnitudes more interesting games spring from arma 4 than s&box. Just like how there have been many more better games in Garrys mod vs Roblox.
>>532161095this isn't reddit, nobody cares about advertizing here.
Anyway, when I say 'potential to make money', I think the base assumption is it will make nothing just based on soul/feeling/lack of innovation. However, it also checks the boxes that should theoretically make it money. So this is a battle between Soul and Soulless. I predict 7 sales, but it could mysteriously make more.
>>532162175alright, so you have gmod. source 2 is completely incompatible with source 1.

>>532164521You're basically saying
>Battle Royale game modes could have been made in any engineYet they weren't, it was only thanks to modding platforms that devs could innovate, this is good for the whole industry. Bring down barriers by allowing people to work with the fantastic content of Half life Alyx.
Garry put his greed before you and me. He drew the line at content and made an engine, you can argue this is still a net good for gaming, networking and a unity clone that is not shit.
Yet I remain upset, because as a result we will have less innovation, we will never live in a world where devs had access to HL.A content and were able to make the most soulful games imaginable. Does this explain it better, can you understand my point or are you still being biased.

This was also around the time that people were sometimes mocked for posting Factorio and the thread was more elitist about engineering games, but despite KSP likely qualifying it was just that much of a problem.
If KSP made it into the OP, the thread would autosage and die, because mods had autosaged KSP to kill it and ensure it never happens again.
Then some time passes, the autism dies down and they remove it from autosage and /egg/ kinda accepts it I guess. now everybody just posts about factorio, kinda lame but w/e there aren't any other games to play.

You can never overexposing a game. That just can't happen. There far too many gamers out there. The market for video games is far too huge. Don't worry about giving away your entire game for free in exchange for feedback and traction.
Trendchasing isn't a thing because trends don't go anywhere. Rather, you should think of it as trendleading. As a gamedev, it's your job to take the trend somewhere new.
The most successful game designers are the ones that play the most games.
You shouldn't target the casual audience for the same reason you don't target the AAA audience. They are one and the same.
Marketing isn't as social as it is strategic. Amateur kenyan helicopter devs see things like how some people post on social media and get lots of visibility and wishlists, and they think that is marketing, but that is just the outer shell of marketing.
>>532188853Yeah but you've got several different types of tiles, some has slopes starting halfway and others are entirely slopes. Example being the tile that connects the two ramp tiles.

With art there's really no minimum floor to being considered successful art
>>532192489The execution is engineering, the abstract ideas are art
>>532192568engineering is not a domain where there is always only one solution for a given problem
I am looking for feedback on population growth. The game is a city builder with battler aspects. The population of your city will grow to a cap.
One idea is, every in game month roll a percentage chance on every living female in the village. If it succeeds then a child is born. The question is, what if all of the males are dead, what if there are more females then males? And how should I select which of the living males becomes the father for each successful role on the female? This matters because stats of the children will be based on the parents.
>>532192568You have no clue what you're talking about. Engineering is a world of tradeoffs. There is never one single goal and single solution. This isn't math class, retard.
>>532192670>>532192774Yes, but there is a minimal floor for being considered a successful solution, for example Kenyan helicopters do not fly, making them shit helicopters objectively

Hi, I'm sorry if you hear this all the time. But did anyone ever feel a little bit stupid and unconfident about their capability before learning programming, and did it end up turning ok in the end?
For context I took a Java class in college for my obligatory math credit and failed. I tried to take Intro to Logic as well but I got overwhelmed and withdrew from the class. From high school onward I struggled a lot with anything more complicated than basic algebra. I did do well in one class that I took after I failed the Java class, Introduction to Computer Programming for the Arts. That was probably more than half a decade ago. I just skimmed through Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs since it was recommended and it's hard to imagine being able to grasp it all... But I am hoping the lectures will help with that.
I guess I'm asking did anyone feel this way when starting and does it get better?
>>532194707Yes. Math is easy, memorization. Itโs only because you have to do it in a quick way that messes with you. Programming homework is kind of BS, and coding is actually really easy. Itโs mostly looking at if statements, updating data then displaying it.
