devlog from the Paradroid dev, circa 1913
I will come up with a better OP next time, I swear.
Is there a single successful large'ish complex game that was written in rust?
People are picking on Thor for his shitty code. But I don't get it, wasn't he QA at Blizzard? Why would anyone expect a new dev to have great code? I guess he did talk about being a hacker. But I think he was the non technical hacker. The "social engineer" aka "They left a door open and I walked in muahahahah".
Hopefully nobody looks at my code. I don't give a fuck about clean code. And in fact clean code is SLOWER. There are many times the compiler can't make assumptions when everything is abstracted out across classes and methods like it could if you just had an 8000 line method.
>>532260584nearly word for word the same as my devlogs.
>>532259294ultima underworld approach
eq was somewhat similar
basically you have x amount of inventory slots that can house any item but can also have bags in them which allow for more inventory slots
>>532260808thor is a narcissist bully so he can get fucked
the player can tell when art is AI generated, but not when code is, yet artists still complain.
You will never succeed without constant output
>>532260584>have to alter the game so you can also load the debugger at the same time
>>532260739Tiny Glade
I don't know why anybody would put themselves through writing a game in Rust or C or C++ though at all. They're just not ergonomic for it. For rendering and fast algorithms, yes, and write hooks to a scripting language for it. I imagine Rust is even worse than C and C++; C at least has some affordances where you can get creative with it, but Rust has all doors shut
Progress: Finally added some new decals, spilling blood all over when giblets bounce. This does max out the decal buffer super fast though, I'll add options to use a bigger one or else the old decals start to fade away after gibbing only a half dozen enemies.
>>532261153artists are very sensitive. it makes them artists.

You're not a real gamedev! "Brackeys tutorial on youtube", for Christ's sake? An online course? What a joke! I worked my ass off to get where I am! And you take these shortcuts and you think suddenly you're my peer? You do what I do because you have ideas for cool games and you downloaded Unity? I committed my *life* to this! You don't slide into it like a cheap pair of slippers and then reap all the rewards!
>>5322614072099 of course, I'm an enginedev after all, and a perfectionist
>>532261310looks good. but more importantly, do you say hard g giblets, or soft g giblets?
>>532261297>Tiny GladeThe lead programmer is a huge Rust head and had been working at Embark on all their Rust engine stuff. He even wrote a pretty popular realtime GI solution in Rust. The woman tech artist also had a lot of previous experience in Rust for procgen art with Houdini. So it was ergonomic for them, but it's a unique situation
Every game with female protagonist needs pregnancy mechanics
I'm making a Majora's Mask-like.
>>532261589I pronounce them as jibs, jiblets, jibbing, and most importantly, instagib. This is the only correct way.
>>532261501I can't wait to make it and have this happen. I kind of want to post on Tim Cain's youtube and be like Tim, I made it. All it took was making a UI that wasn't insane. (Arcanum UI is fucking BRUTAL)

>>532262698It's weird how alot of these old games were sci-fi.

>>532260808People are always looking for any excuse to abuse someone. It doesn't matter what the context actually entails.
>>532262927it's hard to write sci-fi these days because we're living in a sci-fi world
"Developers" in the indie space don't realize that they're essentially writing software, so they don't treat it as such. That's why all your shovelwares are so buggy and unoptimized.
>>532262927No it's not. Sci-fi is older than you.
>>532264710Yeah I just either malloc a block of memory or push it on the stack and use it to the best of my ability. Maybe an assert or two to sanity check some things sometimes.
>>532264880hey me too. are you me???

how do i add amiibo support to my steam game?
I worked hard on my music. I'm going to force you to listen to every track. Or you have to mute the whole thing. I wish I could write a virus that keeps you from turning down the volume of your own computer.

>>532265480First you need to become a registered Nintendo developer, then you need to get a special permission from Nintendo to use Amiibo on your game, then you need to use the library from the SDK they provide and integrate it with your game.

>>532266248>These people seem to have paid for youtubers to feature their gameI hate that you have to do this. The only people I hate interacting with more than you guys are youtubers.
>>532266830you could just maliciously spam your game on every forum on the internet using chatgpt to generate posts pretending to be some hardcore fan

>>532266248>These people seem to have paid for youtubers to feature their game and say you can expext 1 wishlist per 333 views.I'm sure that depends on the game. My game (before I abandoned it) got one wishlists from 77 Steam page visits. If it were featured on Youtube, it would probably need 2000 Youtube views for 1 wishlist.
>>532266248a 1300 view youtube vid got me like 25 WLs and 5 sales so sucks to suck for them
>>532267046Wow it must have been easy for you to reach 100,000 wishlists then
>>532266248I feel like these stories end with "wishlists are fake, they didn't convert". My feeling is that those are likely low quality wishlists. The people browsing on steam and wishlisting it are more likely to buy
>>532266248Irrelevant data.
>For every 10 people who see an ad for your game or see its thumbnail on Steam, only 1 out of those 10 who see it will click on it. >Out of those people who clicked on it, only 1 out out of 10 people who clicked on it will actually buy it. >Out of the people who buy it, only 1 out of 10 will interact with your game in a meaningful way for longer than a couple minutes before forgetting about it.>Out of those people who interacted with your game, only 1 out of 10 of those people will actually like it>Out of those people who liked it, only 1 out of 10 people will leave a review (and it might even be Thumbs Down review on Steam where the person says "I liked the game but I would recommend the developer change this and this for the next game. Great job by the way can't wait to see what you make next!"So you need to get 10,000,000 people to see an advertisement for your game before you even have a chance.
>>532266986>just use newSo you're mixing C++ and C. I compile my code as C, not C++. If your malloc segfaults, you're doing something wrong.
>>532268051If you're using C or C++, you're doing something wrong. Just use Unity or Godot.
>>532268420I'm doing just fine with C, C++ is total bullshit though.
>>532267687I'm curious to see where this meta ends up in a few years. More and more games are garnering tens of thousands of wishlists yet struggling to convert any decent percentage at launch, meaning Steam quicky buries them and they never get access to the true storefront (carousels, pop-up announcements, Discovery Queue). It's said that once you cross 100,000 wishlists Steam is willing to give you a launch pop-up, but now they wait to see how you convert in the first few hours before doing so. So even with Steam taking notice of you before launch, you need to get tens of thousands of dollars in your first day before they actually do anything to boost you. Storing up more wishlists is still better than not, but you really need to focus on launch day conversions and how fast you rack up wishlists prior to launch instead of thinking you've made it as you sit atop 50k wishlists that trickled in over 5 years.
>>532268420Unity and Godot use C++ though
>the feminist group didn't attack any NTR games
hmmm....
Maybe I should tone down my 3d learning
you can rope in contributers and a publisher on a great execution with bad art but you can't do the opposite on an art portfolio.
>>532268695Yeah so (You) don't have to. Just use C# or GDScript on top of those engines. What's the point in reinventing the wheel for something that no one's even going to play?
>>532260448 (OP)This guy is extremely unfunny and his viewers are cultists parroting everything retarded he says, if you listen to people like xim you never finish a game btw.
>>532268624I hope the new meta sees a much small emphasis on the social media side of things. The whole #indiedev #indiegame #gamedev thing and everything associated with it is the most obnoxious shit ever.
>>532268896>What's the point in reinventing the wheel for something that no one's even going to play? What's the point of using a full-blown extremely bloated game engine for a very specific kind of game?
>>532267687I'm almost tempted to wishlist the game so I can see how it does, not because I'm interested in it.
>>532268896>What's the point in reinventing the wheel for something that no one's even going to play?to do it right
>>532268974You have never finished a game and you have no game and you are a nodev, I win
>>532268767They're catholics posing as feminists.
>>532267821It's about triggering cascades. You need A amount of wishlists for popular upcoming, B amount of dollars earned to stay in trending, C amount of dollars earned to trigger carousel placement, D amount of dollars to then get a Daily Deal, etc. and then 10,000,000 impressions is a given. It's a progressive algorithm with gates at each level, and if you can pass a gate you get automatic acceleration. You don't need to bring 10,000,000 people with you.
>>532269119Well for one, you actually end up finishing a game instead of spending 10 years making an engine. The agreed upon consensus here is that you either make a game or you make an engine.
>>532269465But I'm not making an engine, I'm making a game. What the fuck are you on about? I'm no Casey Muratori.
>>532269262Ah yes I'm sure you can make a better engine than hundreds of professional Unity developers or the combined effort of countless experienced open source contributors.

I guess the reason twitter likes don't convert to sales is because everyone who is using social media is scrolling on their phone. That audience is possibly(?) more likely to play f2p phone games and gacha. And even if they play PC games, they'll have to wait to get to their computer to go and download your game, and by then they will probably have forgotten since phone addicts have fried attention spans.
has anybody played around with the renpy visual editor?

All you have to do to win in agdg is to call the other person a nodev and imply they have no game. I am the best at this. I have the most games too.

giving up on gamedev is like trying to quit 4chan, you always want to, but you never manage to. although i'd say quitting 4chan is easier. let's say quitting social media is just as hard.

In other news, I modeled the dungeons, treasury (now with piles of gold that would make Smog chagrin) and Doom Dragon's Lair for the explorable Fortress Fygoon. Additionally, I made the clock in Joey's room function based on the time set on your computer; since a Frydarian day is divided into three eight-tsas (hour) segments, with a tsas having 60 remnut (minutes), the clock tells time accordingly. It was a quick addition, but I knew there'd be people wondering why the Basileus's clock wasn't working.

some apartments have survivors and they'll behave like npcs in the sims. it's your choice to keep them alive or kill them. they will cost resources too.

am I missing anything obvious for my plantation?

Idea guys, I need lore advice. I'm in the process of writing the creation myth of my game's in-world religion. Is the whole "fire, water, air, earth" elemental thing and having a god for each too played out? I've been reading some real world creation myths and folklore fore research (mainly the kalevala and some native American stories) and practically all of them have this same 4 elements "trope". Obviously it wasn't a trope back then, but it's since become one.
My immediate instinct tells me that yes, it is played out, but at the same time I want the characters in my game to have a deep connection to the natural world. I don't intend for this to be something that's all magical with the gods being a visible force in the game, but rather something more akin to reality where the myth is basically an explanation for why things like weather works the way it does. Blaming storms and wildfires and stuff on the behavior of unseen forces.

I get most of my shitty ideas from my dreams, yet I also get most of my amazing ideas from my dreams. It's interesting. Immediately after waking up aswell. So, "just 5 more minutes of rest" is actually good for your game.
>>532314437These aren't meant to be good since I just thought of them off the top of my head, but should hopefully help you to think from different perspectives:
>Storms, wildfire, and the like are governed by a singular deity or force, rather than a separate deity for each>A deep connection to the natural world can imply more than just physical things like plants and animals, (spiritual, the reason behind these things; energies, having a deep understanding the the spiritual principles which govern these things)>something more akin to reality where the myth is basically an explanation for why things like weather works the way it does: you could literally do anything with this, ranging from "the creation myth is that an advanced civilization 7000 years ago created a machine that's inside the moon that controls the climate on earth," to other random things like "the weather is determined by a series of coin flips that occur in a higher plane where hyperdimensional beings influence earthly events"Follow threads that are the most interesting and fun to you

>>532312075>but rather something more akin to reality where the myth is basically an explanation for why things like weather works the way it doesThat's not what myths are bucko! God you're so stupid it boggles the mind eh. Myths are archetypal hyper-real abstractions of meta-truths across time and space. Each individual or instance might embody a fragment of a myth, or their acts may, in aggeegate, contribute to or rejuvenate the tradition of a culture. That's the bloody hero's journey. Roughly speaking.
But yeah 4 elements are overplayed and I dunno which creation myths you read but I don't think they're that common since they're a . The theme of most creation myths is the creation of masculine order and civilisation out of feminine chaos and wilderness. In Genesis before God even says "Let there be light" there are dark waters, both darkness and water being the domain of chaos.
So I dunno what you've got in mind for your game but never forget... Worldbuilding and writing lore is literally pointless if you have no game and you're just engaged in advanced ideaguy nodev busywork that gives you a false sense of accomplishment. So stop that shit and make a game.

After a little time struggling to figure out what the main antagonist evil gypsy for "Me or You" would look like, I was browsing a random thread on /v/ when someone posted this king penguin undergoing a catastrophic molt. I saw it immediately and made a quick sketch, then made it into a sprite. Very happy with it. The game takes place in a Turkish and Greek inspired setting, so they must be especially baffled by this woman who came from the south pole.
I don't think I'd want the player fighting her directly in the game, she probably shows up every couple of stages to give the player more trouble one way or another.
I'm making a scoring system. Something like a basketball game. When giving points to the player, how should I calculate the distance bonus? Should the bonus increase linearly with distance, or should there be a curve, where bonus increases slowly at first, then increases more as the shot distance increases?
Is it an overkill to try to tweak scoring this much? The player will already get less point so maybe no need to further tweak it?
>>532327589Anon? You do know basketball only has 3 points right? 3 points being notoriously difficult to shoot because you're either on the other side of the court or at the half court.
>>5323275891 goal = 1 point

>>532327861>>532327787No there needs to be a distinction. The distance will affect the points gained alongside other factors.
>>532328108>>532327787>like a basketball gameMeaning the distance has an affect on difficulty and therefore needs different score points.
>>532328381You should explain what your game is because if you want crazy scoring look into baseball where they do insane mathematics to calculate player stats.

>Turkey mention!
>>532328615only scientists do that
you can buy cow manure from local ranchers to use on your farm much easier than using human excrement
do you even into farming?
>>532328581>>532328661>>532327589This is what I have in mind. If you score you get 100 points, but based on the distance you will get let's say 50 more points depending on the distance. There are other parameters I'm thinking of for calculating the score. So each shot will give some score like 127, 146, 116... So the player will be rewarded with more points based on the difficulty, and it won't look simple like "you get 1 points, 2 points". I hope this clears up what I had in mind.
>>532329064This only makes sense if passing a certain benchmark meant the scenario changed like you go from clear space to an area of brick walls. You haven't explained what your game is, is it shot put?

>>532333748If by "indie dream", you mean the dream where you could get paid a livable sum simply by shipping any garbage asset flip shovelware, then yeah, that dream is dead. We're in the post-shovelware era where, year-on-year, our algorithms become increasingly efficient at separating the wheat from the chaff. Great games that people want to play make millions while bad games that people don't really want to play make next to nothing. The middle ground is gone.
the real hard part of game development is getting people to give a shit about your game. can you get enough players to play it for free? no? sorry but you have a flop on your hands. make something else.

I'm making a danmaku and i just can't decide what kind of theme will be:
> Supernatural> War-like (airplanes, tanks.etc)> Spaceships> Motorcycles (like endurance ones and the player has a machine gun)> Walking (like pic rel Guwange)The problem with any other than space stuff is that i have to invest a lot of time on ground art. And it has to make sense with the actual positioning and type of enemies, . But at the same time i want to do something unique. I already have several PoC and how the player will move and shoot so its time to start working on the levels. Any experiences dealing with background art?
