True neutral has far more emotional pull than any ending in the series. Tragic doesn't mean bad. If anything, CoV law and chaos are too feel good, especially law.

For a while I've felt like the narration shits on the V law ending for no reason, with the implication there will be no progress (even though you aren't taking over as an emperor or anything, just mantaining everything from the shadows), but looking back, the neutral ending is even worse, with the narration outright saying destroying the throne is useless. Obviously it's all set up because there's a "True Neutral", but the True Neutral ending goes for something completely different. They could have had amore satisfying standard neutral ending if they just left things more open regarding the Throne's destruction rather than deliberately telling the player it's useless to push them for another Neutral Ending that actually goes for something completely different with all demons being erased.

The narrator complains about the law ending rejecting the " infinite possibilities of humanity" and keeping the "old order", even though it's just bringing back everyone who died unaware of the tragedies, and the mc overseeing things from the shadows like the God of Law did for humans and angels, keeping the "older order" - even though the old order still allowed humanity to get to modern age. Funny thing is that you're basically doing the same thing in True Neutral, just by yourself since you eliminate all other demons, and then restore Tokyo with everyone being unaware of the battle just like in Law. Tao/Vengeance Law at least has the whole "granting everyone's wishes" to clearly differentiate how things would be different from that point on compared to the old world.

But like I said, it's nothing compared to the standard neutral one going on about the battle continuing, and although humanity wins and survive in the end against the demons with the mc's help there are uncountable losses of life and all this while stating in the scene before that the throne will eventually return, so even the reason for all the deaths doesn't really stick.

What is the void world we supposedly make? I know its disconnected of the empyrean and of the "Void" before the throne but with how the game treats the void, that doesn't mean much. The void is both "returning it to nothingness" and also quantifiable existence (Lucifer demon haunt). I view it as you and Yoko having the freedom to paint it as you both believe best, let your fanfiction be manifest without a Mandala System forcing a reset.

I found it as an oddly hopeless ending, admitting when all options are given this world is the best we can ever hope for. Though I also do have a optimist view of Chaos (no illusion that even if there is a paradise of human/demon coexistence to be realized, the path is very likely to not be pretty and take iterations).

Nope, it's probably the easiest Atlus game I played.

Ginza, Purski and Oni Jorou random encounters don't fuck around and it's also where I started to feel the insane grind for money.

I went for Neutral because it had the most content/boss battle and the game give me no real reason to side with Law or Chaos.
I remember an NPC saying that Messian and Gaean battling each other is only making things worse for everyone and I would agree.

Nope, I played he PS1 version and while I enjoyed it, I wouldn't replay the game because of the insane encounter rate, the insane shop prices and it would still need a lot of QoL.
FFS, the cathedral forced me to go back and fuse a Throne again solely for Estoma.
I would play a remake but I don't believe it can be made nowadays.

Since my fish wife isn't there and won't be before a long while, I went for bird and chose Harpy, I did dislike how you can't keep your favorite around but it was my first time playing and had I knew that the game was this easy, I would have kept her around to the end.
But in term of pure utility, anyone with attack and defense buffs/debuffs, Tam Lin and Jikokuten pretty much carried the entire end game since there's no way to dispell them.

Now some random thought in no particular order:
You quickly notice that physical/gun attacks are the way to go, there's no easy way to replenish mana in a dungeon so there's another incentive to focus on physical attacks.
Ice and Elec spells are beyond broken and you can very much stunlock any boss immune to them and there's only an handful of them.
Most things can be autoed, which is not necessarily a bad thing given the insane encounter rate and Estoma is rare.
Fusion doesn't transfer skills so a demon's worth is entirely determined by what skill it can use by default and their HP and defense stats, attack is barely a factor because the MC alone can outdamage the rest of your team by himself and resistances barely matter since you can facetank everything (except Mudo/Hama) as long as you have enough HP and/or defense, this is true for your demons and even truer for the MC.
Element fusion break the game harder than in any of the other SMT I played and triple fusion is dogshit.
A lot of the higher level demons have unique and cool sprites when many demons are just recolors but you don't really have a reason to grind that much just to fuse them. I mean, I fused a Dagon because I could and he did nothing but normal attacks against Michael, I could have used Tarunda instead but never actually felt the need to do so.
I liked the bromance between the MC and both alignment reps but the beginning is a bit... far-fetched ?
Correct me if I'm wrong but they never met each other before IRL and when they do meet, they go "hey, I met you in that dream I had" and act like they were BFF since forever.
They don't have a lot of lines together either, just the bare minimum to make it work in the context of the game: knowing that you have people you can trust from the bottom of your ~dream~ soul and that the feeling is mutual would probably be very nice in an apocalyptic setting.

Based on what dialog you can scrape together to fully explain CoV chaos, the MC is basically taking over the role Tiamat was going to have before she was killed. It makes sense this is the case because it's one sea god replacing another essentially. And Tiamat worked with Apsu in order to create the world, a fresh water god, and Susano-o also represents the rising river waters that would help grow rice fields. The Nahobino is two people as it is so it all just fits together perfectly. That being the case all the water imagery is tied into the void as well. Going back to SJ where the race name for Tehom was first used, the term "mother of the void" was written in Japanese to imply the the space where the ocean meets the horizon. It's like saying where the ocean begins you will also find the "void". Lucifer also calls the chaos about to come a "rolling sea" in the chaos ending.
I don't believe this implies the Nahobino's fate will end up like Tiamat though. Obviously he's much stronger so if his own creations try to kill him, he won't lose. Bigger problems arise from the fact that he may never stop fighting which Goko pretty much says flat out in his quest. And Mastema says that humans are going to wander the earth like tormented ghosts which would give them cause to rebel and want the Nahobino dead in order to bring back the throne system (presumably). I don't know how miserable this would make the Nahobino though, if at all because he doesn't exactly hate fighting and he never doubts whatever path he chooses in every other ending.

My suspicions about the identity of satan proved to be correct and with the help of Lucifer we open a can of whoop-ass on him after navigating a very easy dungeon, then beat god senseless as is tradition in jrpgs.
He tells us that we have destroyed but a shard of Him, and tells us that this isn't over promising to enact judgement upon all of mankind one day.
We return home, all of the residents of the shelter leaving for good. Now the demons are gone they too can partake in the blessings of an irradiated hellscape with limited food resources and little available housing for those who don't immediately die of cancer.

You get a quest to defeat it (it randomly appears in any dark Tokyo areas, just keeping spawning enemies anywhere and it will show up) and afterwards kill it and it's unlocked for fusion. It's a demon around level 50 though, so you might be lower level than necessary to fuse it when you get to that quest.

Don't get me wrong, I think the dream sequence and how it foreshadow the fate of the characters on the Neutral path is the best scene of the game.
The bromance is very nice too, you have Law and Chaos Hero arguing near the heart of the Cathedral but they never attack each other despite one being the worst enemy of the other's faction, they still believe in some way that things can be resolved without fighting or at least by a third party (the MC).
We also know that Chaos Hero is the of the resentful kind thanks to Ozawa and it's one of the reason why he sought power (the other being freedom) but when you do kill him, he actually doesn't mind and even call the whole journey a "nice dream", which is both a throwback to the dream sequence and a sign that he really valued his friends above even power.

i also do think the demon on top of chaos hero was a succubus, namely, lilith.

but yeah, the way smt 1 handles its surreal premonitions is really nice.

What if Raidou Remaster addin't contemporary comments replacing the SMT1 references in the corridor, while having even more explicit SMT1/2 references in the DLC is because they're working on a SMT 1/2 remake that takes place in modern day rather than the 90s?

I know, there's too many comments and posts I found myself agreeing with that I just can't list/recall them all, which is yet another reason that made me enjoy this playthrough with everyone.

They're never doing a SMT 1/2 remake. Like with Persona, SMT 3 will get the remake treatment first since there's already tons of assets to do one thanks to SMT V. Also after said SMT 3 remake, they'll do IV & IVA remakes next since they're more popular entries + pre-existing assets they can use(The Dagda model for example) + most of the current SMT staff began with those two games, so there's more of a push to remake them instead of SMT 1 and 2.

i'll add that it's kinda funny how law hero's and chaos hero's reactions change between the dream and the end.
law hero is happy you saved him in the dream but upset at the end in reality.
chaos hero gets upset you woke him up in the dream but gets happy at the end in reality.
the reactions get reversed.

but i guess maybe it's because in reality, you didn't really save law hero from being a sacrifice like you did in the dream.
and you didn't wake chaos hero up from his good dream in reality at the end like you did in the dream at the beginning.
and in your dream, you're all still traveling together...
going back to how things were and being friends again really does feel like something only possible in a dream.

or maybe you could argue you still did save them in reality too by ending the people they became because others manipulated them.
if you enact neutral, law hero is still a sacrifice but god doesn't get to make anything of it so could be like since you end him as the messiah, you end him as a sacrificial figure.
and you "wake up" chaos hero from his good dream of gaining power and friends.
but i'm not sure the reversed reactions really make sense that way unless you just say the dream was a more twisted version of reality so some parts are obviously going to be off. especially with continuing to travel with your friends.
and the persepective being the exact opposite, i.e. meeting for the first time vs. seeing for the last time.

It can happen if they just replace and cut a bunch of filler demons rather than try to recreate its line up.

They had 400+ demons. VV had 270+. Add the Raidou ones (including unplayble ones that can be made into playable demons, like zombie cops which are enemy-only in Raidou but demons in SMTIV) and the few ones that are in P3R and P5R but aren't in SMTVV (like Qitian Dasheng) and you can get close. P3R had some replacements already too.

The ones they'd really need to recreate are the story relevant ones by the guest designers. It could be a good chance to dump the guest designs too if there are issues with them.

It's not the "2nd half," more like just the end-game. Everything is fine, and things are actually looking up when you go to the alternate Tokyos... until you get to the route locks and then you get a rushed set up for your faction and no cutscenes or set up for the enemies at all, who are just standing there waiting to die, even though the npc dialogue claims a huge war between the forces if law and chaos is happening. It really shouldn't be hard to add some boss battles and urgency there. Although I guess the way Atlus works all that would remain the same and we'd actually get some new girl leading to a fifth ending.

And past Masakado is just an extra boss. Facing him has nothing to do with the story since outside of the DLC no one mentions someone appearing out of nowhere to stop him, they mention a guy they knew that sacrifices himself alongside Masakado to create the ceiling (and it's not even canon in Apocalypse either, where we outright see the flashback with no time traveling Flynn anywhere).

I'd like to draw a comparison between SMTVV and MT2 for a moment. And no, it's not the desert netherworld setting, it's the sense of adventure within the apocalypse that no other games in the series do.

Both games start with a feeling of hopelessness and confinement. In VV's case it's with the humdrum of every day life along with the overwhelming threat of being killed with all the mass murders going on you're told about. In MT2 you're told about the nukes and the boring humdrum of being confined to your very cramped bomb shelter with your only entertainment being computer games all day. Your life is structured and boring. Then suddenly demons are thrust in front of you, in MT2 it's Pazuzu invading your game, and in VV it's the tunnel collapse. The netherworld is meant to feel unsafe of course, but it's liberating. For the first time in MT2 you leave your bomb shelter to explore the unknown and are told you're the chosen one. In VV you become the Nahobino and explore looking for a way back home. And inevitably as you unravel the mysteries of the world you've been trust into, you play the role of the hero trying to save the world. You engage in experiences you never would have had otherwise. In other games you lose that sense of adventure to the point where I'm surprised it took so long to get that feeling back. Most of the games since SMT1 focus on ideology and general hopelessness. You are not there for an adventure and you are not the hero. Demons are dangerous tools with nothing to ground them. In MT2 and VV you get to look into their daily lives and even fulfill their quirky requests and explore the strange landscape they call home. And although MT2 sends you on a far more wild ride, like getting swallowed by a demon, getting your arm bitten off, etc VV tries to send you on a strange ride as well meeting giant demons and engaging in their lives and the like.
I hope I'm not the only one who gets how I feel about this but it's why I love both games so much.

after beating SMT2 I've decided to play something a lil different in Devil Survivor 1, the 3DS port. Seems neat so far, just slapped the shit out of Wendigo. Doing a MAG build on the MC because Atsuru already seems physically inclined, and Phys skills seem few and far between in the early game. Unsure how I should build teams though, I've got a bit of everything on everyone right now, each team has a healer, some kind of physical fighter and a magic demon. Dunno if I should build specialized squads instead, though that seems a bit limiting coverage wise.

SMT4+a are both peak for me. Its something about how pointlessly large the compendium is , how customizable the MC is , the huge comp stock, and how quickly you can burn through demons. I really enjoy throwing 20 demons at a boss and failing or barely scraping by a win. Having the velvet room with you 24/7 is instrumental to this.

Other small things like ambushes on the field, customizable avatar add to my immersion.

What the ideal game would add would be more randomly genereated elements, and more divergence in your quest. You should have multiple options for where to go - few games nail this like peak WoW.

I'd like to see one combat system used several times to make things feel more like a game of skill rather than meta gaming around beating one quest.

dicking around with my skirmish wargame version of megaten I've experimented with a mechanic that uses maga as a second life bar and some effects ( frogging someone, hama/mudo) are more accurate on low maga units. Certain types of contracts would be able to rebuy a dead demon again just for Maga. I've been playing SMT2 and i am considering dropping maga all together.

Pardon late reply but I ruminated and still left confused. My issue isn't the symbolism, it's the mechanics of things. I can get behind Yoko/Vkun doing their own throne-exempt branch of creation via the "Void" (despite Goko/Godborn prompt saying its nonexistence) via shared water symbolism. I'm just left wondering what exactly that new world is. I can accept the idea they intended it to be fanfiction defined by the player, but it seems like they were intending a set-in-stone ending.

So first problem is that he's the only source of this idea of endless conflict for the Chaos ending. Furthermore, I don't think he's a reliable hint for the chaos ending. Even in the quest-line he spouts that your world is rejecting creation, insinuating a world of no future rather than one of a new, non-Empyrean, future. Finally, what type of strife? I know I joked about a "Neverending Shonen Arc" but I also don't see it as inherently bad, conflict is healthy (bloody, hate-driven wars no but only one can win 1st Place) and helps grow character. And a Chaos route that leans more into joyous competition would be nice change of pace for SMT (imagine a demon+humanity game jam session where Mara is competing against depraved fujos in making the best hentai while Yoshitsune does mock battles with a human commander elsewhere). Other Chaos endings are more explicit in the type of conflict being involved (SJ/IV/Chiaki going for endless bloody war).

why not just call it the demon world? or leave it as makai?
aside from being a "demon world" makai also sometimes refers to a world comprising of earthly desires. it's meant to be the opposite of the buddha realm (bukkai) which represents enlightenment (completely disregarding earthly desires).
and makai is also used to refer to the upper heavens of the desire realm because they are still influenced by earthly desires.

Japan has many words for paranormal creature that would simply be translated as "demon" in english.
In fact, all of the race names in japanese have been translated as "demon" in many other works because it's the quickest (althought lazy) way to do it and the subtleties are usually lost on the reader/player.
As for translating makai as abyss, it's probably the translator taking some liberties either because "it sounds better" or because he expected other realms usually populated by demons like jigoku or meikai to appear later.

The thing is, actual information on what the chaos end is about is scattered between multiple people in different places. The reason it's clear the plan didn't change is that in the cutscene before the route lock, Yoko says Tiamat will destroy the world and start over. In Yoko's max gift box exchange in the haunt she says the MC is doing the same thing, destroying the world and then using his power to create the new one. With such little information, you have to use all the information you get and assume it's all accurate.

Eventually you will get a side quest to keep or destroy arcadia, keep it around. You get a bunch of LAW points for doing so but it's terminal is heavily optimal for traveling across the land.
