How do you add multiple characters to a conversation?
No, i am not asking for which button to press, but how do you create the structure.
I guess it is better to use an example:

You want to make a LoTR RP and make characters cards for each character.
1. Does each character have the whole world lore added to each card?
2. Does each character have information of the other character added?
3. How would you go an add a narrator to keep the story going?

I want to use sillytavern to make a visual novel-like RP with 4-ish characters cards + 1 narrator card, but i don't know if i should give each card the same premise and scenario plus information about each other to maintain coherency, or how should things be structured. If each is about 800 tokens that would be 4000 tokens before the chat even begins. Also, i want to add a narrator that moves the story forward but i have no idea how to write one, any ideas?

If you need the characters to be interacting with each other often in one reply, like for example if you want 2-4 of the characters to give their input with the same reply, then you should either:
1. Describe each of the characters briefly in the description of a single scenario card, so they are always in context.
You might go this route for a threesome trio card for example, where their interactions together are the point.

2. Describe them VERY briefly in a single card's description then have their full description in lorebook entries that trigger when someone is mentioned by name.
I have a harem scenario where the rules of the world are described in the description of one card, with greetings message that are character-agnostic, and I can mention the name of anyone I want to RP with to bring their lorebook entry into context. (picrel)

If you want to interact with each of the characters individually and they're very fleshed out, you can make a group chat, which is option 3. In this case you'd want each of the characters to use the same lorebook describing the setting, and probably but some key details in each of the cards (duplicating information).

Bear in mind that in a group chat, each time the LLM is generating one character's reply, it won't know anything about the other characters except what is in the chat history, unless you change a setting to make all cards be always in context.

You can also insert a "scenario narrator" card which explicitly moves the action along, with instructions about what it should say when it's up to speak, or you can do it yourself by setting your persona to "Narrator" and typing what you want to happen next. The group will follow your lead.

For a LOTR setting, even a stupid AI probably has enough of the source material baked in that you can afford to be very light, so I'd probably go with Option 1 if I was you, and switch to Option 2 if the description gets too big and bulky

Ok, finally got shit functional, fixed some of my dumb mistakes. But now the thing I'm bumping up against is that I can't seem to get more than roughly 1k words worth of generated content per press on deepseek v3 0324. I've literally got response and context cranked to max here, but even after hammering it with '2k minimum' in the character and the prompt, it won't go over 1k. Is this a model limitation or am I screwing up somewhere? (I'm the type who prefers genning entire stories like on typical LLM frontends rather than RPing.)

The response length limit doesn't actually tell the model anything, it just makes the program stop running after that many tokens.
Otherwise, generation ends when the model outputs a special end of text token that marks the end. You could try using the continue function but unfortunately this is hit or miss depending on model and provider.

If you've used Llama3, Erato's a story completion finetune of that. Outdated base model, only 70b and 8k context, but servicable prose all the same. If you want back-and-forth chat, it's terrible for that. If you want completion though, there aren't many models that are trained for that specifically.
I think most folks who used it for only writing are waiting for the next model; the ones who still use it likely also do imagegen. 25 bucks a month feels too steep for the current state of its textgen.

It’s been pretty okay outside of some annoying tropes. I had to add a line to the literary style field to actually tell the AI not to make everyone a snarky sarcastic wanker, for instance. It helps that I’ve modded thing a bit to spawn NPCs and Enemies to have more specific design details or abilities, and a few tweaks here and there.
