In Shen's case sometimes you legit go net negative if you kill your opponent. If you don't kill them at a perfect time where you can pretty much immediately recall as soon as they die, then you're forced to push with Shen's worst push in the game top lane, enemy TPs back, clears the wave in one ability/rotation, and pushes it back to your own tower and takes a plate before you get back. Unless you tp of course. Which is why TP is mandatory for Shen.

I saw that video of Azzap saying that you might actually make a lot more mistakes than that one, but I think having to play almost literally pin-point perfect is insanity.
You could probably say that if the enemy doesn't know what they are gaining from you making a mistake, then the mistake is pointless, the issue is that regardless of that they gain more stats and you have less. Based on mere number difference, they have more than you. Removing feats, Atakhan and elemental drakes could help, in my opinion.

You're right that true damage used to be much rarer but it wasn't quite as rare as you think. Twitch, Cho, Corki, Kog, Irelia, Vayne all had it before her. But it was pretty rare and champions that had true damage typically had significant weaknesses elsewhere in their kit. Similar to how %hp damage used to carry a high power budget, and mobility skills as well.
Ahri was complete bullshit on release though, but she didn't become truly cancerous until season 3 nerfed the fuck out of tank items, which made a lot of high dps characters suddenly rise to the top.

from 2017-2023 we really had some of the fucking out there overloaded designs. They started pulling back abit for awhile (vex, millio,briar,naafiri, smolder) but we just got ambessa and mel which are overloaded as fuck again. They also routinely struggle to control the power levels of characters like ambessa and mel so they are playable in all elos often resulting in characters like sett struggling in high elos and characters like riven struggling in low elos.

I like the way Legion TD 2 does its rotating gamemodes

Ahri was good but you are forgetting her only utility is her single target charm, which is okay but when you consider that other mages like Orianna have massive AOE knockup nuke, Syndra has multi ball mass stun, Veigar having a massive cage, Malz suppression etc then Ahri's charm doesnt seem that great. She didn't have any defensive abilities like Lux, Ori or Karma shielding and was mid range compared to stuff like Lux or Xerath.

As soon as I got near masters queue times become 10-15 minutes depending on the time of day with half the lobby autofilled and asking for their main role in chat. Early game pressure leading into lategame utility. Mages spiked the hardest of any class early (level 6 power spike was insane on champions like Annie, Veigar, Twisted Fate), tanks did better midgame once they got 1-3 items, and eventually ADs would take over lategame once they finished their core of IE/PD/BT/LW. Because of this, it was acknowledged that after you took advantage of your early game power as a mage to get your team ahead, you would transition into CC machines, the most obvious being Annie's AoE stuns and TF's global pressure with gold card ganks.
It's also why assassins, which weren't super common back then, were balanced around having silences. You'll see a lot of clickbait youtube channels and retarded zoomers constantly parrot "OH MY GOD TALON HAD A SILENCE????" Of course he did, because it was a way for Talon and Kass and Leblanc to function lategame without making them just oneshot everybody at every stage of the game. it's definitely a case of appealing to retards with main character syndrome. in the past you had to know how to properly draft and play each stage of the game, and understand how to transition between them. You COULD play assassins, but the difficulty was not in execution so much as knowing how to capitalize on an early 3-4 kills, into ending the game before 35-40 minutes. Tanks were actually super durable but you didn't shit out damage like nowadays, so you were about having continual disruption and providing super powerful auras and effects like aegis, randuins omen, frozen heart, the like. It was still following the dota design philosphy of a midgame character. Mages were designed to be the people controlling the game after laning starts to end, think lvl 6-13ish. A mages role in lategame teamfights were often similar to what a mage support might be today, trying to inflict cc on the ADC and burst him (you could not burst a tank). To add to this, guardian angel was also incredibly good on ACTUAL tanks themselves when it was a %hp revive (there was a period of time when it was changed to flat HP). It was not uncommon for endgame scenarios where there'd be 5-6 guardian angels across both teams.
