About to start Rogue Trader. Never played an Owlcat game before. Is there a correct way to play it for the first time? I've read that not everything is as finished as it should be. Any recommendations for a fun experience?

Also who's the better romance pick - the navigator chick or the assassing chick? Or the brown hag maybe?

Play Dogmatic or Iconoclast, (or a mix of the two) avoid Heretic, it's unfinished, badly written garbage. As far as romances go, Cassia is a sheltered noble princess who wants you to court her with proper decorum and slowly build up your relationship, Kibellah fucks on the first date and is obsessed with doing anything and everything you want, and Jae is using you to make money and improve her position in life, but she is honest about it at least. Companion wise, the best companions are as follows, narratively:

Top tier: Pasqal, Abelard, Marazhai, Cassia,
Decent Tier: Heinrix, Ulfar, Jae, Kibellah
Bad Tier: Yrliet, Solomorne, Idira
Unfinished Tier: Argenta

Enjoy. Also the combat is a joke if you build your characters half decently even on the highest difficulty so yeah.

Officer Archetype just feels right to take but can boring since you are just ordering people around
Chaos path is garbage and doesn't make sense, stay away from it. You can play Iconoclast, Dogmatic or mix them and it's fine.
Game simply falls off hard in later acts. Everything simply is rushed a lot there. Probably because act 1+2 are already longer than most crpgs, act 3 is a side quest and by act 4 game is so long already they needed to rapidly wrap it up and were probably running out of budget and time to make it anyway.

Kibellahs romance (and character arc in general) has a series of flags that trigger, whichever ones are triggered the most at the end determine her ending and conviction path. If you go full Dogmatic in your responses to her (which is her Fanatic flag) she will break up with you at the end of her romance because she considers her duty to you as your personal assassin and the Emperor more important than being your lover, which she feels interferes with her primary role.

Also yes, if you have any grasp of how to build characters in CRPGs just play on a higher difficulty, the games combat is ridiculously trivial and boring even there, but at least there's SOME fun to be had in Act 1 up until about midway through Act 2.

Let's do some quick math. We'll assume that "planet-sized" means a small-ish planetoid like Earth's moon, not Jupiter. We'll assume that 80% of the structure's volume is taken by essentially engineering spaces - propulsion, support structures, life support - and 20% is fit for habitation. We'll assume that "hundreds of thousands" is lowballing it and there's actually a million people living there.
The Moon has a volume of 2.1958*10^10 km^3. Multiply by 20%, divide by one million, and you get 4391.6 cubic kilometers of living space for every Eldar.
If we actually wanted to give every Eldar his own park, that park would be 66x66 kilometers, with a ceiling height of 1 km.
There's enough room for every Eldar child to park several personal Eclipse-class cruisers, IN ADDITION TO the actual docking facilities of the Craftworld, which I'm not counting in the habitable volume.

I wouldn't dump it for a first playthrough but you don't need it that high either.
There are plenty of checks for other stats too so its not like your char will be completely useless in dialogue without it.

Normal, especially if it's your first time. Core maybe, if it's feeling too easy. Lategame on Core might be hard, but then again the buffs you cast in battle stay, for a long time with longer buffs, so it's not like you don't have any buffs at all.
It also makes sense to consider that initiative feat with what you're considering. I think it's a fun way to play.

Almost finished necromancer's tale. I honestly can't really recommend it unless you really like necromancy themed games. Very clunky. It has some great ideas though and maybe future patches will make it better. Apparently you can become a vampire but I have no idea how

How you're supposed to pick is really just decide what one sounds cool. I would avoid going too exotic, like stick with a weapon type you like and there will be a number of weapons for it. Not a *ton* but few weapons have a ton of various options.

Falcata's exotic so you'd need to spend a feat there, I think, right? There are a bunch of falcatas though.
Personally I'd definitely go handaxe for axe and shield. There's a bunch of good shields too, and feats/mythics related to it. Also you may end up getting into shield bashing which I found to be pretty fun, but there's a bunch of feats to make it decent, since it's basically two-weapon fighting.

A rogue trader is just a person who has enough money to be exceptionally well trained, educated, and equipped. They would be among the top of what a regular human could achieve through training and equipment, but they are still just a regular human. Something like a space marine would kill them in about 2 seconds.

That said, some of the tech in 40k that they would have the money and legal special permission to own is pretty impressive. They have rings on their fingers that look normal but shoot lasers/poison, they take drugs that keep them young and healthy for hundreds of years, they have subdermal implants that act as armor, they have augments that enhance their vision or hearing or even their thinking, and a bunch of other cool things. But this is all ultimately just making a regular human fancy, so that's still the gist.

If he happens to also be a psyker then that would be different, and the answer would become he could beat whatever a psyker of his psy rating and training could beat.

I like playing games on the hardest difficulty but in wotr it's just tedium. A demon having 40 ac so you have to cast certain spells before you approach in order to kill him is not actually meaningfully more difficult or skillful than just playing on lower difficulty so he has 20 ac, and you just save time and approach and kill him with your unbuffed party.

Don't get me wrong, wotr is a wonderful game for many reasons and I do love it in general, but one of it's biggest flaws is artificial time wasting buff system, where you just buff to overcome inflated numbers and the encounter isn't actually meaningfully different.

Owlcat did a slightly better job in RT, where at least there is no prebuffing in that game. Sure, some of the classes begin fights by doing a sequence of buffs, but it's not required.

Hopefully their next game takes things even further, and the encounters themselves actually change between difficulty settings, and they further refine their turn based gameplay with more good things from the tactical turn based genre like elevation and more emphasis on cover and movement. We've already come a long way over wotr's blob party moving around the screen. Owlcat gets better with every game they make.

I can see Act 3 having this journey through the Webway playable and it would connect to both Tranzyn and that graveyard, but that would be even more of this already long Eldar sidequest.

Honestly they fucked up with two first dlcs conceptually, in spite of them being fun to play. Kibbles and Solobore should be in DH. Two first dlcs should add Xenos companions. And then those two more dlcs shouldn't add any companions only expand the game
Those two new dlcs with Tranzyn and whoever it is in second one will do nothing to fix Act IV anyway. Problem with it is with main quests and is a result of Act 3 being a giant sidequest. At the end of Act 2 we become RT proper and are introduced to competitive RTs. And then immediately we go on a random trip to Commorragh instead of continuing our rule. This stretches game a lot without properly enhancing it. All that effort, resources and manpower that went into Dark Eldar city should instead go into politicking with Calligos, Chorda, other factions and your nobles in act IV (which would be obviously then called act 3). And those season 2 dlcs should be about minor xenos like Rak'Gol invasion, Slaught infiltration and Stryxis.
Cumrag shouldn't exists and I say this as a person who really likes it, because I love gimmick of losing my eq in games, I love aesthetics, atmosphere and even music there, I like how it enhances replayability since you want to see how your other companions are tortured etc. Gangs of Commorragh should be a separate game or minicampaign, or part of Eldar Corsair game

As it stands now tho, I think getting new companions asap and then putting most of that content into act IV would be the best, but at this same time there should be a free update to base game adding more quests at the beginning of Act IV about dealing with Chorda and Calligos. Because currently you just have a single quest to remove each of them (Footfall and Quetza)
