Yes, they get really strong at higher lvls, some have useful stuff like Bow Mercenary lvl 4 can give you Magnificat. When you use them check their skills, because you have to cast them yourself.

If you want tanky ones, then go for Spearmen, if you are an alche and are using homun to tank, then Bowmen are good for extra dps, and finally Fencer ones are hard hitters but not too tanky.

With Angeling card they become a bit stronger the more cards you get, and with Permeter card you can Potion Pitch heal them (or you can Rideword card and heal them with Scrolls instead), Slim Potion Pitch also works on them.

For example, the max lvl spearman (which I don't have) has 18k HP, 70 DEF and can use Devotion on you.
To use above grade 6 (lvl 70+ mercs) ones you need to use them for a while, because it asks you to get Loyalty for them to hire the stronger ones, which they get for killing high lvl stuff with you and surviving the entire contract time.

Not sure what would be the best place, I just took them wherever stuff felt stronger than me.
My Fencer and Bow mercs have around 120 loyalty each, so I think just taking them anywhere you're currently leveling is fine.
I just recommend you look at the list on Irowiki and see which ones you want to focus on to get the higher ones, although grade 6 ~ 7 ones are pretty decent on their own.

Is there any endgame content outside of doing MVPs?
Playing a bit on Ragnav has been my only RO experience so far, but I was pretty disappointed when I joined a pick-up MVP party a couple of times in the past.
I wasn't prepared for the whole concept of everyone stacking into a single cell for Safety Wall and Pneuma while a few people try to blast it down as fast as possible.
I later learned that even getting touched by some of the MVPs is instant death, and therefore such strategies are necessary, but it still wasn't very fun.
Is there anything to do at endgame that feels more like a casual EXP party? I really liked those back when they were more common.
I did join a few Thanatos runs before, and those felt better. But I also struggled to keep up with the fast pace and was being hard carried by the rest of the group the whole time, not really knowing what was going on. Especially around the end of the runs with the main boss.

TK gets stronger with more party members and that's why you probably saw big dmg kicks, Star also needs to trigger miracle / hatred to hit upwards of 11k, is not something that you just have all the time.

If you're alone the most you do is 1.4 ~ 2k, a kick isn't stronger than a lvl 10 Bash, on a full party it goes up to like 3k ~ 3.5k, it's Miracle / Hatred what really pushes it over because that's double dmg, but it's also something you don't have 99.99% of the time.

Mind you Star can't equip stuff like Ice Pick, so high def enemies just wall it, and so does anything with Reflect Shield, it also has no defensive skills to survive, no parry, no dodge, no hiding, no heals, only Break Fall which only works against ranged skills.

So, not sure why playing Star is a bad thing, if anything, playing it when you have access to a 12 player party is the best time to play it, it's when it gets to shine the most, and even then it's still weaker than TK Ranker unless the stars align.
