For a long ass time I've thought about changing the spawns to something dynamic for an MMORPG. It seems like such an obvious choice to fix a lot of the problems with quest hubs and meta grind spots.
SWG sort of did it but the capabilities of the system were so basic that it wasn't all that great. It spawned dynamic camps when you picked up quests from a terminal, and I think the game had some randomly spawned camps. Attacking the camp spawned more monsters and destroying it got you a credits reward. Not exactly a great system and it turned into an aoe grind pretty quickly.

It's really hilarious to confront all the anti-AI troons on here with AI voice acting. Their arguments against AI art is that it looks bad and you're better off doing it yourself instead of fixing AI output, which is... Fair enough. There's little reason to use AI art when you can do it yourself.
But voice acting is not something you can do yourself, not for a whole cast. Doubly so if you're coming from an environment where English is not prevalent. So in that case using AI voice makes sense, as it's too expensive and you can't just do it yourself. But this mindbreaks the anti-AI troons. They don't have a good argument for this, so they end up reaching for irrelevant points or unquantifiable metrics because they have no logical retort.

Now that I have hindsight, you know what I would do if I was 20 again?
I'd get hired as a programmer for 3 years. In these 3 years I would learn everything I need about programming thanks to doing it 8 hours a day and even getting paid for it.
On the side in my spare time I would also learn 3D modeling. After 2 years of practice, I would start looking into making commissions or getting hired part-time as a 3D modeler. After 1 year (3 years programming) I would quit my programming job and start doing only 3D modelling commissions full time for the next 2 years.
Then after 5 years, at 25 I would have all the skills required to make a high quality game and start doing it.
This is actually what I ended up doing IRL except over 10 years instead because instead of focusing 100% on polishing my skills, I did programming full time, 3D model commissions part-time and also worked on my game in spare time and spread myself out too thin and still haven't finished a game in 10 years.

It's the best feeling ever when reading a paper and suddenly something just clicks and you get it now. Polygon ear clipping seems intimidating at first but it's actually quite simple: you keep track of certain types of vertices that form triangles that are considered valid by this algorithm's rules, you call these "ears" of the polygon and you remove them one by one. Each removed ear is a valid triangle to render and you just continue this removal process until nothing is left.

Game design is the hardest part of gamedev.
I'm freaking the fuck out right now... Someone was banging on my door and they sounded like legit CIA guys like BOOMING deep voices telling me to open the door and they need to talk about my game. Like holy fuck, the voice was almost DEMONIC. Growling with ascending and descending tones, a very impressive range and strong vocal stamina.
I go to the door and it's a pair of out-of-shape pudgy little middle aged men. One of them was like a fat Asian guy. They looked really weak and tired, there was a palpable sense that these guys hadn't had three square meals in weeks
They start immediately demanding money that I supposedly owe them, something about how voice actors deserve to be paid. I just slammed the door in their face. Fucking scammers, I basically never fall for this shit as I have a pretty high verbal IQ (I am Brahmin so it comes naturally)

code architecture design has been the bardest part of gamedev for me so far
it's easy to slap together some hacky nonsense, but add complexity and your entire project falls apart, expect months of refactoring
it's hard to plan and design technical systems that can scale to reliably accomodate features, but if you do this, the days/weeks you spend melting your brain designing viable approaches can save years of future refactoring and bug fixing
this is assuming your game isn't hyperlinear, can't be directly hard-coded, and will eventually require functionality that interacts with previously created features
game design/"idea guying" is easy if you have passion
asset creation is difficult, but the required effort can still be enjoyed by creating art
promotion is easy if you're proud of your game, you'll be excited to show it off
polishing your game is fun and extremely rewarding when you're done and get to play around with the new shiny features you've created
even programming shaders is fun if you're patient and have humble expectations
but laying a foundation of code for your game that doesn't implode into an incomprehensible mess of problems when you begin working on a new feature that interacts with previously created systems has been my biggest struggle by far
it seems to boil down to separating the functionality of your code from the data it reads, so that new instances of action can call upon the foundational functions and insert their specific values from wherever they're sourced
UI values, save data serialization, NPC states, upgrade systems, dialogue systems, general game states, universal flags, as some examples, are easy to begin working on, but quickly devolved into horrendous nightmares if you don't know exactly where the relevant data is stored, how it's retrieved, updated, saved, and classified
i know the difficulties of game development are subjective, but this has been my biggest struggle

Progress time!
I've added a bunch of small things, displaying the score for each card, showing the selected hand multiplier before it scores, added a small sweating animation on the card that is currently targeted and a hurt wiggle.
Added health bars for all entities, and implemented damage dealt based on the current hand.
Still have to implement the display of the enemy's played hand and the score for it.

We need the bots to be predictable but dynamic so they feel intentional.
What I came up with is a Finite State Machine with occasional blackboarding, and designed the system from a ttrpg standpoint to iclude a roulette or card deck system the bots pick actions from based on conditionals.
When agro'd all bots are going to be either pursuing, shooting, or retreating (same as pursuing but backwards). This might have several Microstates and bots will have enemy type specific states, but these are the 3 things that ALL nonturret bots do.
Normally you'd have percentages chance to pick which action, but on the front end I don't like that because it's harder and harder to intuitively balance. So instead, For example a basic bot might have pursuit 3 attack 3 retreat 1, and that means it has a 3 in 7 chance of shooting at the player before it is forced to pick again. These can be adjusted instantly for example obviously if there's no LOS to player then attacking is set to 0. But the bot only has to do raycasts or nav mesh calls when it finishes an animation and is about to decide its next action phase.
But we can do other cool things too, like a machinegunner that has 3 3 3 stats, but every time it successfully picks "shoot" it adds 2 points to the attack option until it fails to pick shoot or the option is not available.
The last trick up my sleeve is just to have two radii in the bots relative to the player.
a shotgun enemy is going to primarily have "pursue" points until the player is in the outer radius.
If the player is inside the first radius the bot switches to mostly shooting. If the player enters the inner radius, the points flop to mostly retreat so that the shotgunner tries to keep the player close but arms distance.
Thoughts?
In the end, I don't think my game's going to get much more than ten plays total. Better luck next time, I guess? It only took like three weeks to make, at least.

Other engines exist aswell, although inferior in the fact that they're proprietary. I've used godot for 3D before and see people complaining about it here and personally I think it's not as good as the 2D mode so if you want something 3D try it and see if it works out, personally on godot 3 it worked fine the entire time but performance isn't great
