I don't think that's ever happening, man. In the run-up to its release, EA gave it plenty of publicity and created a fair bit of hype, only to abandon it shortly after pirates and nobles.
The studio that worked on Medieval, Maxis Salt Lake, went on to develop Showtime, Supernatural, University Life and Into the Future.
Their expansions were quite polished compared to others. They barely had any major bugs or performance issues. In fact, all the Sims 3 worlds developed by Salt Lake (Starlight Shores, Moonlight Falls) are considerably more optimized than the ones developed by Redwood (Bridgeport, Isla Paradiso). It's a pity EA shut them down in January 2014

Yes, the bug is a base game problem resulting from too many households/sims. For Rent just introduces a fucky vector for the save file to explode in size. If you're not playing with a million sims you'll be fine.

I might be able to prove that the entire The Sims community is retarded if anybody is able to confirm that The Sims 3 suffers huge lag spikes whenever a cat/dog gets close enough to the camera. The cat/dog needs to leave a certain radius from the camera and unload its fur shaders. When the camera gets back close enough and the cat/dog visibly loads in its fur, there should be a massive lag spike at this exact moment every time consistently. If anybody confirms that this is happening for everybody, it can literally be treated as proof that the entire The Sims community consists of retards because there is precisely one thread online at all about this issue with no solution. I've checked multiple videos on YouTube and seen the issue happening for other people, but seemingly nobody has discovered why it happens and people just claim The Sims 3 is always laggy. A properly modded and configured The Sims 3 is remarkably smooth actually, it's the pet fur shaders that are causing the most obvious lag spikes. This is a theory but I'm pretty sure it's right. I'm convinced any slightly modern GPU will have this issue.
