Every card game has been almost fully an heroed by their own company at one point or another, though. Mtg had a few close calls due fo corporate ineptitude, pokemon had the fucking two year horror that was slowking, and yugioh famously had their IP ending run of worthless GX-era products.

Wasn't it announced recently that some random big brand or game was collabing with a whole bunch of big IPs, including both western and Japanese ones, with Yugioh being one of them? I don't remember which one it was, but the image was posted on a /dng/ thread.

I dunno. I think YuGiOh might have gotten fucked over by the same stereotypes it did historically regardless of Konami's handling. Even if you include Upper Deck's actions, YuGiOh was getting hit hard with an Elementry/Middle schoolers association even before GX.

I know a ton of people put the blame on Synchros or Dark Armed Dragon, but I think most of that blame is a misattribution of a lot of people going into High School/College and wanting to distance themselves from stuff they now called "childish". Basically getting fucked over in the same way Axe did.

It is honestly a miracle that this franchise is still alive.

First was GX originally being a divisive anime and then it was the sets being awful.

Then it was the shock of Synchro monsters

Then it was the shock of Xyz monsters, Vanguard and the shitass formats of Inzektors, Dino Rabbit, Wind-up and Dragon Rulers

Then it was DUEA, Pendulums, PePe, Zoo, True Draco and True King Dino piles

Then it was Link shock and all the FTKs

Then it was Covid format combined with Tear 0, Snake-eye piles and now it's Turn 0 decks.

This franchise by all means should not have survived past GX especially with how bad the dub was but somehow it survived that and survived even worse conditions. What can even kill Yugioh apart from Konami turning it into Pachinko?

That's not necessarily a bad thing when kids are the biggest markets for hobbies next to single middle aged people and seniors. It did Pokémon absolutely zero harm to be marketed purely for kids. I'd say it's the opposite. Nerd groups exist well into high school and college but the problem was actually the rampant powercreep Yugioh went through which made the game unfun.

Imagine trying to play Trooper Monarch back in like 2008 only to have your buddy Destiny Deep Draw into their DAD and they blow up your T Pass board and OTK you and he does the same to everybody else because DAD is just a busted card and nobody can get the card because it's a shortprint.

That kind of state is not fun and then you have Synchros making things even worse since on top of DAD, you have to contend with Stardust and Goyo.

Nerd groups do exist, but I distinctly remember a ton of them effectively fleeing into Magic because it being labelled 13+ rather than 7+ provided a more of a safety net, and "playing YuGiOh" was straight up being used as an insult.

Literally on-boarding people with custom card games was easier than trying to convince anyone to play Yu-Gi-Oh during the 2008-2014 period of time. I only found out about a few of my friends getting back into Yu-Gi-Oh circa 2020.

It had soul because the artwork was shit quality and lazy as fuck. As time progressed, making better artworks became easier so it was expected that everything around it became higher quality, which results in artworks with honestly too much polish.
You'd be hard pressed to ever get something like Metal Dragon again. Shit proportions, shit shading, all topped with a standard JPEG of some clouds they pulled from some stock photo art pack lying around the office.

Functionally terrible, 90% of the deck is hoping for some hypothetical slow-burn super casual game to start playing their deck.

That's not the problem and you know it. Fundamentally people equate rarity with ease of access, and the general rarity hierarchy is out of wack in that set because Secret Rares randomly have double the pool without double the access.
If it were 1 Starlight 2 Secrets 3 Ultras 7 Commons per pack, I wouldn't really give a shit since it all evens out, just that you get less Starlights than the rest which makes them the "rarer" rarity.
As it stands, Prismatic Secret Rare is the highest rarity in that set. If something gets announced for it (like the Dominus cards, Tract and Varudras already announced) then you know they are the least accessible ones possible even removing the possibility of shortprinting which is no doubt going to occur on top of it.

I'm playing paper mostly, but when Marshmao gets released, I'm probably going to just swap the extra field spell with the continuous trap. It's a psuedo T.G. Hyper Librarian as well as making your opponent's monsters too small to climb Arclight if you make Arclight midway through your combo on their turn. It also makes enemy Fenrir 1000 Atk if you do the standard 2 card combo which is another pretty important benchmark to hit.
