Remember when the Nasuverse was a prestigious brand? From 2004-2015ish, it was unquestionably one of the most popular and well written IPs in all of anime culture. We had Fate/Stay Night visual novel, the Tsukihime visual novel, the Deen Fate/Stay Night anime, Ufotable's Unlimited Blade Works, and Ufotable's Fate/Zero. It was a truly wonderful time to be a fan, for there was not a single bad entry in the entire franchise.
Then FGO came out...Fuyuki to Camelot is legitimately some of the worst writing I've ever seen in fiction. Camelot to Solomon was insanely overrated. The EoRs were forgettable, naruto tier filler. And the Lostbelts, save for the Lostbelt 1,5, and 6, were all horrible.
FGO is millions upon millions of words, but not even 1/100 of it is actually worth reading.
The lore rape is abundant, the retcons are insane, the pacing is horrendous, the blatant power fantasy wish fulfillment is off the charts, because all of the female characters fall in love with the mc for no reason, while all of the male characters worship the ground that Gudao walks. Every story arc is full of paper thin characters full of insulting simple plots. The only saving grace of the popular arcs are the "hype" shonen moments. But hype shonen moments won't make up for the lack of themes and literary substance

Lottery events are events where there is a material lottery that gives a large amount of experience, skill gems, materials, QP. They are the best time to get stuff you need to level all your servants. the difference between them and a regular event is that regular events usually only have a shop (and maybe a points ladder) with a limited amount of rewards, while lotteries will give their rewards infinitely so long as you have AP to use.

That said, you don't NEED to save apples for them, it's just a good thing to do. The game gives apples fairly often and depending on where your current account is at you may either not need materials that badly or not need. Don't be afraid to use some apples if you just want to power through some story or farming EXP for something you need.

The best way to tell if you'd benefit from farming a lottery would probably be to check if you have a lot of servants with skills at Lv. 1 to 5 that you want to get to 6 or higher. If there's a lot, a lottery will be useful to you. Skill gems are more difficult to farm generally, while the other things (EXP, QP etc.) can be farmed at any time on any day at your convenience.
