>Are mystery dungeon games allowed in this thread?
Generally yes, most mystery dungeon games(Shiren the Wanderer, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Etrian Mystery Dungeon, etc.) can be considered roguelikes too
>Is Elin/Elona allowed?
Yes, they are roguelikes
>Is Dwarf Fortress allowed?
If it's adventure mode, yes, that could be considered a roguelike, the same can't be said about its other modes though

Another run where the prestige class did nothing. No matter what I can't see a world where the mirrors it spawns does anything noteworthy. Since they spawn on standstill you can't make enough of them to do any meaningful damage; also they are limited to a range of 4 from the player making them even worse.
Otherwise it's a "aggressively stand still" build. Since Agara trigger stand still effects on prayers and Crystalform also trigger on prayer it steadily scales my damage. Crow Visage did Crow Visage things.
Even then I feel like I won mostly because I never got screwed by mapgen. Got a really favourable map against the final boss where I slowed him down to a crawl causing him to be too busy killing mirrors to be able to reach me. Didn't even see him once.

I bought Quasimorph today, really like the game. The combat keeps me on my toes. One thing though, is this the sort of game where you have to rely on crafting? I ask because trading seems like it is absolute dog water, or is that just because I am trading on mars? I would much rather trade decent items that I have no use for and receive materials in bulk than have to lug around 20kg worth of powder through a mission in order to craft my own ammo. around d6, you may come across maurice, or a two headed ogur. These are extreme threats, for different reasons. Blorkula the orkula can also be a major concern, if his undeath renders him resistant to your attack method.

While it is clear that blork is far weaker than a two headed ogur which is far weaker than maurice, all of them are sufficient reasons to simply leave. You've got 3 staircases into d6 from above, and 3 between d7 and d6. Use them all.

Specifically, if a deadly threat is loitering near 2 out of 3 of your staircases into d6, it is now time to use your 3rd staircase into d6 specifically to find a staircase into d7 as fast as possible.

Blorkula is generally overpowered quite easily, and a small amount of extra exp should do the trick, or you may find a correct weapon on d7. Remember that he is capable of haste and ranged attacks, meaning that you can't wait until your health drops before running.

If you find an ogur, or a two headed ogur, either of them can easily strike you down in single combat. You may get away with fighting a normal ogur 70% of the time, but that's still too likely to kill you. If you've got an investment in any kind of ranged weaponry, you can likely just clear out most of the floor and then lead the ogur in a circle while chipping them. Particularly, poison or poison darts work well for this. Wands are an option, if you have some. The point is to not let them near you in the first place, so that you can just retreat upstairs if needed and try again. That works on both kind of ogur. If you're pure melee, simply skip these until you've got more power in some manner. You may even want to save two-headers for after you clear lair.

Maurice is also weak to poisoning, in that you can fully poison him and then leave. He doesn't have that much hp. The main issue is his invisibility, combined with plenty of ranged tools which he may or may not have.
Anonymous No.533839880
>>533838362
Ranged, invisable, blinking, and swiftness means that retreat after losing hp isn't really viable, just like with blorcula.

The main issue with d:6 is that it's transitional. You're still weak enough that a swarm of gnolls can end you. Even a lucky ork wizzard can do you in, if confusion hits and they have a poison dagger. You think you're stronger than them, because you are, but you're still not ready to wander into a swarm of them, or take them for granted.

Anything strong is slightly above your paygrade, and out-of-depth is now an extra half-measure more powerful than they should be. You're moments away from outgrowing them, but you're not there yet.

The perfect example is the acid dragon. If you see it, you're at its mercy. There's almost nothing you can do. It's faster than you. It's not that strong, but it has its special attack. If it hits you with acid, even if it doesn't corrode you, it may outright kill squishy characters. Probably, if you can just punch it a few times, it will likely go down, but that requires that you reach it, and that it just doesn't choose to spit at you.
Unless you're a summoner, there doesn't seem to be a true safe way to handle this jerk, and you probably don't have spare invis pots.
But, if you have resist corrosion, or acid dragon scales, then they are nothing.

That's what it comes down to. You're on D:6. You still haven't quite gotten strong, and your pockets aren't yet full of options. Your build is just barely online, probably. If you have to simply retreat or skip a floor, then do it. If you really can't retreat, then maybe you'll have to waste a might potion on a stupid acid dragon in order to get his scales so that you can wear them for the next one.

>The classic definition of a "streak" in Crawl requires you to never repeat a species or background as any previous win in the streak
>I've been playing Crawl since 2009. This is the definition that existed back then, long predating me. This definition exists precisely because a zillion consecutive MiFi wins isn't particularly impressive, difficult, or interesting for any experienced player. There's a reason that the top streakers bother to make the game harder for themselves by mixing up their combos.

> you're producing a circular argument here - you say a streak is mixed combos, and you can tell because that's what top streakers do - but someone is only a top streaker to you if they play mixed combos!

TLG is essentially just DDA when compared to BN but with a worse "vision/future/philosophy".
The lead dev only forked because even Kevin of all people blocked that devs attempt add more tedium and remove what little fun there is in DDA. Currently though its alright since it adds some difficulty back to the game, but will forever be DDA at its core since the dev agrees with modern DDA on a fundamental level.

I'm fine with magic being shitty cantrips I get from waving around a lvl1 broomstick but then becoming lvl99 armageddon nukes once I've become autistic enough, but my current magic has been very unsatisfactory
>go to sleep, for 3-4 days, hope I learn enough spells for a dungeon from dreams
>go to dungeon, use them up, maybe use a few rods along the way

also: I understand it's a sandbox game and sandbox games are to some degree random, but combat feels so meaningless. In the same dungeon, if I turn a corner, it's a 50% chance whether it's a shitty jobber mob I can easily deal with or if it's a demigod rat which rapes me in .1 seconds. I'm fine with the game punishing me for venturing into an area too hard for me, but these 0 buildup or warning "fuck you" kills are so annoying, it's like I'm being punished for an error I didn't know I committed.

elin wants you to engage with its out of combat systems, especially at the start. Getting the first level spell dreaming perk and letting those stockpile while you farm+cook up your preferred attribute/potentials should get you going. The higher your spellcasting attribute the faster its spells will level, and spell levels are the easiest way to get early damage. Ice arrow should be better than almost anything else a beginner would have, and it helps if you get your flexible starting domains to also have arrow spells. Also succubus is easy mode.

It's hard to decide what's best because the best options are also quite unfun
For example best for most character (including Wyrmic) is Cauterize because it prevents you from one shot (or dying in general). You'll need to put a Shielding rune on auto cast and wait like 5 minutes to get the spell casting requirement.
I don't get Cauterize because I am often too lazy to do it. The close alternative is Ethereal Armor which gives 25% absolute resistance and is all around better until you get one shotted.
For Breath Wyrmic you can go I can carry the World since it is like the only real way to scale your breathe damage. Or you can be minmaxing and just take Flexible Combat like all the melees and abuse Wyrmic multi hitting attacks.

Another win.

I've been playing with early game shapeshifting. This has cost me a number of good runs. It seems like I'm considerably weaker this way. However, if one can use full-meld shapeshifting forms in order to consistently survive, then finding a single talisman would be all you need. Less hoping for good armor and weapons would mean a higher % of runs which get what they need
So it seems worth it in the long run.

I left my defensive skills at 12, and as a result I was using death form partway through crypt. This meant that abyss abuse was viable. With full shapeshift skill, I had enough max hp to withstand a few dispel undead in the necromancy hell. Without that, you can occupationally just die in a few turns.

Tomb3 intantly force-teleported me. I landed in the side room, so that was lucky. There isn't much of a threat in there to start with. From here, it was very safe to just toss javalins out of the northern door. Datura bennu did work for me again., this time clearing out the main chamber before I had ever seen it.

Don't underestimate 4 brimstone fiends. If you see that shit, you make sure you're standing next to a damnation-vulnerable monster immediately.

The defensive stats are great. I don't think I've had enough resistances to afford ring of the hare before.

It's haaaapeniiiiing
2 15's in a row.

This was the goal I set for myself, and that means I'm free to play other characters now. I'm going to keep going until I lose this streak.

I spent the game up until elf 3 using a brandless +3 flail, and then I used a +0 evening star of holy wrath up until crypt 3. At that point, I finally got my okawaru gift, a +4 eveningstar of protection. That's where I finally spent my enchant scrolls.

I finished with 22 armor/dodging/shields skills. That's partially because abyss teleported me away from some javelins I used, twice. I invested a little bit in transolocations so that I could use apportation in an emergency due to the low ammo count. That wasn't actually useful, this time. When you're invisible, you can seriously just walk into the side room and nothing will bother you.

This strongly implies you don't need defense to do tomb, particularly if you have evocable invis. The main thing stopping me from doing tomb before hell and pan is ammo count. Once you've got 22 stealth/throwing/fighting, you still need enough of both special darts, javs, and boomarangs to keep the enemy at a distance. That, and it just seems like more of a risk compared to hell.

Draconian transmuter, my original love, actually.

Or, shapeshifter, I guess. This seems... these seem way weaker. I'm starting to suspect that unarmed combat is doing all of the work, and that my investments in shapeshifting aren't actually doing anything.

Same, it is definitely hard to get working. I'm >>534207005 (werewolf troll) and can now pretty confidently say that the form is weaker on trolls than no form at all, because the missing AC on trolls really makes a difference.
Serpent form (snake) seemed really good and ahead of the powercurve in lair branches. More HP and better defences than troll meant I could easily fight hydras in swamp.
It especially synergized with hybridization. Jumping to enemies with vhi's really helped, blink got me out of some bad situation, and ozos is almost mandatory.
>What is more able to kill an ork warlord, do you think? An iceform drake, or a normal draconian which spent that exp on more dodge/fighting/unarmed?
I definitely think the normal draconian, in my run ice form was very underwhelming. (especially in orc, were lack of mr gets you paralized so not even EV works). It might work for lair, though.
But remember that ice/fire form give wizardry effect for their respective schools, so in a way this makes the shapeshifting more experience-efficient. I want to investigate this.
Maw seems good early, an aux attack that heals you.
Fortress form gives you an acid cloud, I think this might actually be stronger than baseline fighter too in defeated heavy enemies.

It's good for Nagas in theory. Your rPois will cancel out the -rPois; you lose innate AC and tail but you also lose the deformed mutation, and your speed very slightly impoves.

Other than that, it's probably meant to be used on heavy armor melee chars that randomly stumble on it, or shapeshifters that also found a really good heavy armor. The -rpois is theoritically manageable with flux baubles and lignification outside of the poison S-branches.

It's decent at making a caster useful in melee, or giving a melee character some casting boosts. And it in theory allows you to pump one skill and use a bunch of varied forms tailored to the situation.
That is if it didn't basically mandate massive dumps into shapeshifting and unarmed, require training a bunch of secondary skills to actually do anything, and invalidate all your equipment fucking over 99% of all possible characters and locking the remaining dedicated shapeshifters into a ghetto of playing roulette hoping they get lucky with item drops they can actually use.
This is a problem with a lot of the recent changes, it seems like every ability/skill/item is tied to a specific playstyle and doesn't mesh or synergize with anything else.

Back in the day, I used to take figthing-skill-exclusive characters up to S branches. If you're only using fighting, then you have a use for all of those tasty weapons you've been ignoring, and you can dump your enchant weapon scrolls into a quickblade if you find one. If you find a really good artifact weapon, you can use it no matter what kind of weapon it is, meaning you have 4 times the chance of finding an early-game winning weapon.

I did this because there was a high probability I wouldn't find blade hands or dragon form before lower lair, which would basically doom a dedicated shapeshifter. Beastly appendages would also still do work for me.

I consider that transmutation was stronger than shapeshifting in the early game.

I think you're supposed to use your complete lack of armor encumbrance in order to easily afford all the low-level utility spells, but if training only fighting is superior, there's some kind of problem with that.

He was shoving cards into my pockets faster than I could use them.

I was using maw talisman, focusing on physical skills mostly. Any time anything difficult came up, I could just spam destruction, or summoning if things looked really bad.

I found an ice portal. I figured I could switch to the ice form and it would be good.
Killed everything without issue.

Opened a door to a caustic shrike simulacrum. Was at 5 hp before I even realized this was a problem. Being an ice yak with rC++ did not protect me.

Lessons:
1. namelex is fucking baller
2. ice yak even under ideal conditions does not solve the one problem which ice yak appears to be designed to solve.

I'll still use the form, since cold vulnerability on draconians is really bad, but the yak can't be depended on for anything damage-wise.

While they may have removed lots of good cards, that would also mean they decreased the variance, which means it is easier to determine when pulling a card is a good move.

For instance, the only card in the deck of escape which creates distance between you and your opponent is the one haste/slow card. It's effects are not actually aimed at letting you escape currently, which means no more desperately pulling escape cards and hoping to get teleported away.

Imagine if the only card in the whole deck of escape was the wall-creating card. You would know exactly when to use it, and it would be super powerful as a result.

8 years to go from 3 runes to 15
2 months of trying to get consistent with MiFi
2 days to get a shapeshifter win

It's almost annoying how few losses it took.

Cheibriados got to full piety and +15 allstats rocked everything. I had the hermet's amulet, as you can see, so I didn't need to invest in invo. Two or three times, I had to dump piety into Slouch in order to damage a big swarm I couldn't otherwise handle. Early game, the cheep cheibriados spell that slows surrounding enemies helped out. I think it might become useless late game, but I don't know, because I stopped using it.

Lesser beckoning is amazing. It pulls summoners to you, and any kind of ranged unit. Even for melee units, this lets you pull enemies into doorways where they will block other enemies. Obviously, it helps cheibri more than most players.

Maw does damage, which is good, but the healing it gives you on kill helped considerably in longer fights.

Water form turned out to be useless, which was weird. Draconians get natural AC which they lose if they use water form, but they keep that AC in maw form.

I'm not sure how one is supposed to use serpent form. Seemed kind of ass, but someone here complemented it earlier.

Dragon form was inferior to maw form for awhile. For just a moment, in zot, it was doing so much damage that the loss of strength and resistances and evasion was worth it. Being able to simply punch an orb of fire a few times and kill it is pretty good.

Storm form hit harder than it needed to and felt cool, but ultimatly everything is worse than a well equipped vampire form, or death form. There was a narrow window where it was useful, and then it went in my back pocket and was never seen again.

Pay no mind to wyrmbane or the alchemist's hat, I got them after clearing tomb, so I just carried them out without using them

48 ev, once I had stats and skill, meant that even strong enemies had like 10% chance to hit.
Damage was ultimately the main defense stat.

Shapeshifter start is still ass. You're better off taking a different class and training Shapeshifting when you find a good talisman.
Anonymous No.534492773
>>534490407
The issue is that shapeshifting doesn't come with anything you can use when you know you're weaker than the enemy. You've got a few potions, but those aren't a repeatable resource.

Good runs happened when I had a god who would account for that. Namelex let me call out hard fights before they started. Cheibriados simply killed the fight for me when I was in too deep. Oskauwa gave me a free kill on the hardest enemy if I could live long enough, and a waveclear if the fight kept going even longer.

When I was playing MiFi with okawaru, I think I was doing the same thing. The basic prayer is cheep, and +5 allskills is significant enough to turn any questionable fight into a reliable win, with very little hp lost.

So that's probably what it comes down to. My characters felt weak because I wasn't buffing them with 5 skill all the time. Makes sense.

This implies that the actual classes in DCSS aren't your damage sources, but your gods.

skip the oof's themselves until it starts being hard to navigate. Just staircasep peek, but don't fullclear zot 2. Finish zots 3 and 4. Push 5 until you find ooF's in it and then abandon zot.

Order of floors in general, according to difficulty, according to me

D:12, Lair5, Ork2, D:15, (2 lair rune branches), vaults 4, slime 5 (skip the boss if you can't kill it)
Decide which rune you can best get (valut/slime/abyss) and get it if you can. If you can't, don't.
Elf 3, Depths 4, zot 5 (you'll probably have to only partially push zot)
Crypt 3
Crypt is a strange one where your specific preparation can make it super easy or still difficult even at this point. The items in crypt 3 are good, and it's not actually that spooky of a floor. Just remember that you can get tormented, if living. If absolutely desperate, a small investment in necromancy can clear this with like 1 int.
Don't enter tomb unless you're willing to get teleported into the middle of 3 old ass mummies with more nearby, or you have tele-.
Valut:5 is almost always easy at this point, as is slime boss, so you've just gained access to all the easy loot rooms in the game.

So, assuming that' you've done Cyrpt3, Valut 5, Elf3, Slimeboss, hell1, and as much zot as possable, all that is left is the parts of the game where you may not be able to retreat.

>the rest of this doesn't have a true difficulty order, but instead increasing degrees of randomness which represents unmitigable risk. There's nothing "hard" about getting teleported next to a pan lord and his goons without prep time by chance.

You should be able to handle 1 hell better than the others. If you can't, don't. If you can, then take your exp and use it to do each hell in turn. The nice thing about the hells is that you get to decide if you're going to stay in them, unlike the rest.
Anonymous No.534569404
>>534569253
In Abyss, you risk malmutation, and can't retreat properly in an emergency, but it is technically easier than anything else, even before entering the hells. After finishing hells, it should be nearly safe for you. You could have done this before depths, but really shouldn't most of the time.

Entering pan is a risk because you may find a rune which you may not have the money to purchase, but that doesn't matter for you. You're also going to be malmutated a lot. However, since any character should have most of their damage, you can technically finish anything at this point if you do it right.

Some characters, I think, can finish tomb 3 before vault 5, if you know exactly what you are doing. I haven't proven this. For normal purposes, this is the last branch in the game.

And once you've finished a 15 rune run, you should be able to handle OOFs even if you just have to punch them with your fist.

Bolt of fire (3d40) (max 120) peircing pure fire damage. Deleted by freezing cloud.
Fireball: tile-targeted explosion (ignores ev) same damage as bolt.
Malmute(needs LoF)

Freezing cloud does (2d16)/2 + 5 cold, or 6-21 cold, which is reduced to 3-10.5, and then hits 20AC. It's good as a defensive measure against bolts, and that's it.

Sculpt simulacra on an orb guardian or gold dragon is probably good, but the orbs can probably oneshot multiple of them, so that's 6 mp just to buy you one turn.

Ozekebu's is max 4d30 for 7mp, so 4-120, or 2-60 through rc+. Assuming you are bodyblocking the OOF somehow, that's 1-24 or 1-42. Against 20ac, that's average 2 damage at minimum, which is insufficient, particularly since you probably don't have 100% spellpower yet. Assuming that you get full damage from ozek, that's average 30 damage hitting 10 damage reduction, and so it should die in 10 casts with 200 hp. That's doable with a potion of brilliance per Orb, but the perfect scenario is difficult to create.

Hailstorm is 3d20, with half of that being physical, and you probably DO have nearly 100% spellpower on this one. It costs 3 mp. Through rC+, it does 3-60 > 2.25-45 damage. Through 20ac, that's average 22.5 damage - 10 reduction = 12.5 damage, so that's 200/12.5 = 16 casts, which is actually doable if you can just get the orb to stand 1 space away from you or 16 turns.

Ramparts: I don't know how extra wall tiles stack, but it does 12 damage that ignores ac and armor. That's 6 per turn, or 3 through rc+. Assuming that each wall doesn't stack, that's 67 turns to kill an orb, or 17 if you can hit it with 4 wall tiles. There is no mention of spell duration on the wiki.

So, every ice spell
freeze: not helpful
ensorcelled: not helpful
ramparts: 6 damage, potentially 6* valid tiles. so that's either 6 or 24 damage per turn, lets say. That's 33 or 9 turns of the orb standing next to the walls.
hailstorm: 16 turns at a short distance
armor: bit of a waste of time but why not start with one
icebeast: with rc+++, it would still die if you cast an ice spell on it. Capable of body blocking, but it would also stop you from using ozo's fridge.
cloud: insufficient damage. Blocking bolts is cool.
metabolic: orb immune. May help if you force an orb guardian to bodyblock for you, though the orb of fire would just swap places with it.
simulacrum: It's extra damage, and I think immune to ice, but would die instantly and takes too much setup time.
ozocubus fridge: 10 turns and deletes any allies which aren't cold immune.

Final note, ramarts didn't end when you moved in .25, but I don't know when it does end. So, lets assume ramparts deals only 6 average per turn.

You've got rF+++, because you need it. Orb does 24 damage spells to you at 80% reduction. You've probably got some ac, but not that much. You probably have a magic regen amulet someplace, so you've got like 1 mana per 4 turns or something I don't know. I'm going to assume you've got a wand of digging, or that a good location exists someplace on this floor. Summon butterflies is a level 1 spell. Even just from spellcasting and int, you can probably hit the spellpower cap. Assuming you use a hallway, this is 8 enemies the orb has to kill to reach you. Fire bolt potentially does that instantly, but fire ball only kills 3 at most, and melee kills 1 per attack. It should take the enemy more than 4 turns on average to kill the butterflies. I wanted to argue that this could work with ramparts, and maybe it could, but it also lets you get in an occasional hailstorm when everything ends up in just the right spaces, and then still retreat past your hallway butterflies.
Anonymous No.534578368
>>534578170

SO

1. Dig a triangle into the walls
2. Summon butterflies while retreating
3. Occasionally place a frozen ramparts where you've got enough extra space that you won't get hit for it
4. move past the ramparts and summon again so that you've got cover
5. attempt to keep the orb on the ice tiles, but don't blow too much mp on it
6. very rarely, hit the orb with hailstorm when it doesn't cost you any butterflies or leave you unprotected
7. your caster evasion and rf+ should defend against the bolts of fire, which are the only thing that should be hitting you.
8. when your enemy is beaten down enough, when you're ready, cast ozo's fridge on repeat until dead
9. with like 4 mp left, you should still be able to retreat in case shit goes wrong, so do this near a staircase

note: this will not work on any other version of the game, only ver .25. Make sure you have room to spawn enough butterflies

What actually IS your regen with an mp regen amulet, by the way?

For shrines you have to find a shrine of luck, it's the lightest shrine of them all at 40lbs, you can pick it up and take it home. Once it's home you can convert it by offering an appropriate item to the god you wish to worship, so ores for earth and whatnot, but doing this has a chance of getting divine punishment for a short bit. Just wait out the divine punishment if you fail and do it again, if you try to rush it and fail twice while you are debuffed then you will instantly die to smite damage.
>What does strategy even do
The strategy skill effects your max damage (cannot exceed your natural max roll) while doing auto combat, you can also change your strategy type under your character sheet. Fighter will only melee, tank will taunt. Archer will only used ranged when possible and try to back up every so often, predator will use everything. Try to be careful using disabled or casting strategy until you have a really high amount of spells or else your strategy will try to autocast sound bolts or earthquakes on yeeks.
>is there ever a reason to do this
Autocombat has a really good chance to avoid a fatal blow, and will eat some stamina to leave you at 0 hp assuming you aren't instagibbed past your stamina which you can either teleport away or drink a potion. good for seeing how strong an enemy is if you aren't sure you can take them.

The hammer breaks the game in hilarious ways. The most popular realization coming from ways to look for infinite fishing bait.
The more game breaking stuff includes disassembling flowers to get "raw food" leaves. Which you can make arrows out of to get edible arrows. You compost the arrows to get fertilizer, then disassemble the fertilizer to get infinite corpses. Lots of them being harmful stats that you can turn into bait but also a good number of corpses with +str stats that you can cook for food that doesn't spoil since it's made out of soil. Very good for feeding your villagers or stockpiling on your companions so you dont have to remember to feed them so often. Although this was nerfed pretty significantly in the more recent patches, it's still pretty notable.
The hammer is also able to transmutate materials into completely unintended crafting materials if you're autistic enough to find out what does what.

Every cycle adds more stats to the monster. It basically builds on their strengths, like tanky monsters get tank stats and speedy monsters get speed+damage stats. You level up faster with every cycle too.

The most dangerous part is that status effects are applied in larger stacks on higher cycles. Instead of getting 5 stacks of Scorch put on you, you'll get 50 stacks of Scorch and repeatedly burn to death until your willpower purges it, or you'll get 50 stacks of Freeze and be reduced to your minimum speed.

I really don't understand the point of Oni. Their whole description focuses on their racial ability... which is getting a free cleaving attack when drinking health potions or potions of curing. Wow. Amazing. Because everyone knows there's SO many times throughout a playthrough where getting a cleaving attack from drinking a potion (of heal/cure) will make a huge difference.

It isn't even that it's a bad passive, just it's nothing nearly significant enough that I feel like it justifies an entire race or being the defining point of a race. I mean just consider how underwhelming that feels when compared to Demonspawn, Felid, Octopode, Djini, Naga, Draconian, Spriggan, Poltergeist, Mummy, Coglin, Gnoll, Deep Elf, etc. Basically every other race in the game has some attribute or ability that sharply defines how you'll interact with the dungeon and shapes your playthrough. Then we have Oni, which has the grand ability of... attacking enemies when driking potions. This realistically amounts to maybe 30 or so turns throughout the entire game where you get an attack that you otherwise wouldn't have. The attack might still miss, or be blocked, or do no damage.

Specific wounds now need specific items to heal them. Broken bones, fractures, and contusions need splints, plastics or something that holds the limb in place. Bleeding, and deep wounds need bandages and rags.
It's predominantly bloat but it was an indirect nerf to tunnel rats being able to heal indefinitely for no cost. However on the upside, medikits and first aids now stack AND have multiple charges, so you can pump out an unreal amount of medikits and use them 5 times per slot, with a stack of 3 ( i think is the default cap) you have 15 charges of heal and stabilize all wounds per single slot.
First thing you should do on a new run is go on some low difficulty missions against melee factions and harvest as much human flesh/meat as you can so by the time you run your next mission, it will be spoiled, letting you stockpile on good healing.

Spoiled meat is one of the three items required to craft medkits in your ship conveyor belt you access by pressing I while at the ship to pull up the inventory. The three key items you want to hoard a fuckton first thing are rags and plastic, both of which are gained from disassembling clothing, and the aforementioned meat.
Craft bandages, then craft splints, and antibiotics with your stockpiled resources, and all three of those will allow you to pump out medikits.

Been trying to figure out exactly how much good "fighting" is doing in terms of max hp.

There's a formula on the wiki, but the results it gives me do not perfectly match the numbers I'm getting in game. Since the math can't be trusted, probably due to mid-step integer rounding, the only way to know for sure is to test it in-game.

So I'm running an octapode of fighting, exclusively, and desperately trying to get it to level 27 fighting so that I can fill out this table I've made with max hp data. So far, my best is skill-level 23 at XL 14. I'm starting as an air mage.

Elin encourages you to dungeon dive for better gear. But if you want to make specific gear out of a specific material.... oh boy, you have to enter into the realms of hammer disassembly alchemy

you turn things into different things (for example, metal logs, raw food grass, or dark matter stones) by messing with crafting + hammer disassembly of a specific crafted item that will result to a byproduct carrying the same material. It's absurd but this is how you get eventually acquire dark matter tools / equipment

SH isn't forceable. You don't get probable tower shields with an ego until vaults 5. As such, this isn't the primary method of survival for the whole game.
If magic didn't have time to regenerate, that means the player wasn't passive enough to wait around after a kill, was in a rush, valued movment.

Checking, they read a lot of blink scrolls on the way up, on account of having a lot of blink scrolls. They had a lot of scrolls because they did a zig. They also got their shield in pan. They used passwall and shatter and translocations to simply avoid problems.

They did tomb after vaults, and then zig after tomb, before doing pan or hell. They probably used their ability to break walls in order to avoid the full force which tomb can hit you with. They had an investment in fire magic, which helps a lot with tomb 3. With all the scarabs deleted by fire, it should be possable to use passage of glorbula to escape tomb 3, but I don't know. Doing tomb/zig before hell implies they knew what they were doing.

>used arbalist 484 times
Not sure what you want me to explain. They used physical attacks a bunch of times, just not often as a main weapon, other than this. Their spells were built around creating distance between them and the enemy and then chipping away.

Even though I'm enjoying this I have to say I'm having a fucking mental breakdown because he's using terms from both DRL and JH and they'll be in JHC and different from both of the other games but just similar enough that I lose my sanity. Like I just went down the rabbit hole on army of darkness in JHC having multiple tiers and largely functioning like it does in JH instead of DRL except it boosts shotguns and chainsaws, and then I had a meltdown because I thought it covered rocket launchers in DRL but no, that was how it was in JH

So far all the branches have felt like JH branches too, and JH branches play well but so many of the DRL branches were so goddamn flavorful and JH never had anything like that. Hopefully DRL branches still exist and I've just been unlucky, or hopefully he brings back some more goofy themed branches. Considering how much he patched JH and how much it improved over EA and post launch I expect this will probably get the bajesus tweaked out of it but right now I'm definitely missing more of those themed DRL maps. Having the bruiser brothers was a treat after no wall or arena or anything. But then again maybe he's ditching those since they were guaranteed item locations and he's trying to make it so you can't always count on a branch giving you access to something? I don't know. No that was the funny part. The stair is under boldog's tile and boldog and the other orc uniques generate with a pack. Normally that's cool fine whatever they spawn and fuck about the floor. The problem was I was on the adjacent tile to the stairs and in that nook there wasn't enough open floor for the pack of orc warriors to spawn. So one moment I'm in an empty house checking the nook for a door to a small forge, the next turn I'm engulfed by the freshly spawned boldog and 11 orc warriors.
I was trying to save rage turns by swapping on my better shield and gondolin axe so I could rage whirlwind a hole to escape through with the instakills and gondolin fear overwhelming their boosted pack morale.
Boldog's the meme build killer since he has high damage sides for this phase of the game so it only takes a nat 20 like he got to chunk the player. You can't just hide behind heavy armor and low evasion with a gondolin weapon for free up XP for other skills like you can for orc champions. Since he got flanking bonuses from the warriors that spawned behind me and I was down 1 con from smithing the warmth cloak it was so over. Hit nat 20 accuracy roll and hitting for exact max hp despite my heavy armor was hilarious.

It's got good granularity with a ton of viable options that affect how you play.
Flanking brawlers dancing around the room racking up evasive bonuses and numerous attacks of opportunity
Berserkers charging in and crushing enemies with a massive blow and whirlwind attacks striking everyone in range and hitting again when it kills something
Polearm users planting their weapon for a bonus attack against approaching enemies, knocking the enemy back, and repeating in a controlled retreat zoning and whittling down the enemies
Subtlety users forgoing protection to blast enemies down with a flurry of crit slashes
Assassins sneaking through rooms, executing the weak and abusing cruel blow's confusion to disorient and gnaw the stronger enemies to death
Singers leveraging utility to leverage the enemy's weaknesses or bolster their own offense, regeneration, or protection. Even silencing shouts, finding hidden doors and clearing traps.
Elbereth archers ccing enemies and fleeing when they can't manage, archer smiths augmenting, a journeyman simply opening with a flurry of arrows then fighting in melee, versus a pure archer putting it all on the peak shot.
Diving thieves siphoning up the loot and escaping and pacifists being sick freaks
The broad spectrum of smiths from all-in snowballing smiths, double-boosted armor smiths securing their early game, to dabblers making the most of regen and horns or the consistency of guaranteed resists and saves.
And many many more

Stat/xp investment being across 4 stats, 8 skills, and a crapton of abilities from each skill tree creates a lot of headroom for distinct gameplay experiences especially pushed to their extremes.
The combat system works on dice with a trend for lighter weapons having less dice but higher sides like 1d12 and heavier weapons having more dice but lower sides like 3d7 and often accuracy penalties. A weapon can gain 1 side of damage per 1.0lb of weapon weight. 0.5lb So a with momentum. A crit adds an additional die of damage per level of crit so 3d7>4d7>5d7 and so on. Each level of crit starts out at rolling 7+weapon weight over the enemy's evasion roll. Later on through subtlety one-handing 1-h weapons like a 1.0lb sharpness shortsword it's only 4+weapon weight letting builds quickly rack up 7+ crits to turn a 1d11 damage into an 8d11 damage roll. Meanwhile enemies have some good spread that deepens as the game goes on. Evasive enemies, highly armored enemies, trolls and their huge regenerating HP sacks. It's something you really notice when you first start encountering the tanky kemenraukos. You get some nudges to adjust your approaches instead of just locking tab.

The stealth system is decent letting you avoid bad matchups and out of depth monsters. For example, around 500' deep giants and whispering shadows show up. Giants hit super hard and have a lot of hp so they can be risky to subpar combat investment but they're also blind as fuck so a mild stealth investment will let you juke them. Whispering shadows are breeders that are also blind as fuck, with stealth you wont turn rooms and vaults into a darkened hellscape. On the other hand Wargs, spies, and so on are relatively perceptive so if you neglect stealth and stomp around in heavy armor you can end up drawing nearby patrols onto yourself. In addition, unwary enemies only roll with half their evasion score and sleepers have their evasion set to -5 for a huge reward. Especially for stealthy builds.
Like another neat thing you can do is find or make a horn of thunder which applies a short -2 skills debuff to the enemies that fail a willpower roll against your willpower. It makes a huge ass racket but at the same time provides a massive pseudo-xp bonus from depressing the enemy's skill levels and making them more manageable to kill. Reaching crit breakpoints, helping heavy weapons hit consistently to chew it to death, drive them off with elbereth or a horn of terror so you can sprint and vanish from an OOD/unique fight and so on.
The willpower system gives you more to work with for enemies. On one hand you might try to fight 11 orcs, trolls and cat warriors straight up but due to their low will you can use debilitating effects and consumables to even the fight out.

The morale system lets you use light against light fearing monsters, slaying weapons, Elbereth, and other fear inducing items to dictate the flow of battle if you invested, made, or found the stuff for it. Even just knowing you can unnerve a pack by carefully selecting who to explode with decisive blows to break the pack's morale so you can pick them off. It gives you more tactical depth to respond to unexpected bad situations. Other monsters are unintelligent so you can split up a pack accordingly then trap them behind doors to make it more manageable.
Light level in general gives some interesting situations. A number of enemies generate an unnatural darkness or darken the existing light in the room. And since enemies you can't see get to roll against only half of your evasion and accuracy it's a pretty brutal penalty that raises the strategic choice to avoid them, go around them, misdirect and lose them somewhere else on the floor, prepare your equipment/build for them and so on. God bless the double OOD shadow spider jumpscare.
XP is given both on sight and kill and decays per instance so you're not as punished for builds that aren't poor combat or specialized builds that can't tackle everything you see on first contact

Because of the turncount clock you have a pool of expected xp to work with and within that, the enemy's statlines are fairly in tune so peak performance doesn't look the same for every enemy and doesn't apply to every enemy. As you get better at some stuff you're going to fall behind elsewhere and need to work with that. Since floors also aren't static that means you can go as fast as you want, rewarding your risk with stronger loot sooner on instead of grabbing ass on the shallow depths getting vanilla junk equipment. Vaults in particular are pretty neat by often having good equipment at the price of being filled with traps and enemies often 2-4 floors deeper than the floor you're on. It supplies a really engaging back and forth to scout it for worthwhile look and overcome a challenging enemy or steal the loot and barely escape alive To leverage strategic considerations like being able to split them up with doors or combining your high stealth and vanish ability with their low willpower to draw them out of the vault and scatter them so you can fight them in easier numbers. You can even be a sicko that largely avoids the higher risk of the vaults to enjoy the lower risk regular floor contents

What makes sil and sil-q so engaging is there's that direct *bandlike correlation for the player being able to boost their rewards at great calculated risk. To be thrown up against great challenges and overcome them with what you've built and what you have on hand again and again in a myriad of different ways as you hurtle into vault after vault not as tablord the effortless conqueror but as an everyman who is very much at risk of getting curb stomped if they aren't careful. The game's XP is tight enough that you feel a strong bond between the strategic choices you made and not just how you can face the myriad of tough challenges you'll encounter but how the choices you made also hurt you elsewhere.

You eventually got AC-walled. you'd notice it if you just did a pure MiMo of Okawaru back in the day. Also why the better races like Trolls and shit that had better UC could hang on longer than if you did a meme HOMo starting to flounder in vaults without slaying gear. Especially if it used a shield. Transmutations were weird in that you were just trying to get blade hands castable and not need to eat a whole ration per cast. Once you could, it fixed UC's AC issue and you were off to the races.
I loosely recall the devil's team started malding about blade hands so things are probably in a pretty bad shape. Even if you did find an analysis, it's probably long outdated from all the mangling that's been done. Even stuff like leaning on spider form's ev at times until you got blade hands up for the death yaks in Lair is probably ruined.

Pour one out for all the Naga Transmuters of Chei from back in the day. It was truly a way to live.

Hold my beer, so there's a lot of stealthy bullshit and let's begin by asking what the fuck even is (((stealth))) and why you're getting surrounded.

When you first approach the floor you want to establish a loop of open doors for pillar dancing and sprint loops to use vanish on asap instead of say, just going straight left or straight down or wobbling all over the map like a drunk. Then as you explore you want to get another one that isn't immediately by the stairs cause yes, they will spawn at the stairs at the worst time and trap you.

If you're a funny joker you can start the game by immediately getting 6 stealth, assassination, opportunist (bonus attack when enemies step away from you), 3 melee, and 2 evasion. It's somewhat stable for the most part and pretty much back-doors the outcome of the end of early-floors transition of the following build. The caveat being you can get warg'd if your floor drops and monster generation is bad/no doriath pre-warg'd before you stabilize the build from the cost of lunging for opportunist early. You also have to decide on if and when you'll get smithing for a horn of terror and elbereth for trolls. After though you're drastically stronger than the generic melee start.

Alternatively you can play the stock start of 5-6 melee/evasion, work your way up to 8-10 melee/evasion, then pick up opportunist and begin transitioning into a stealth based stabber. A utility optimization of this is starting out with 5 smithing for jeweler, effective 8 smithing skill, and smithing a regen amulet, sustenance ring or w/e, and a horn of terror. Then picking up the willpower tree's channeling's +5 bonus to allow you to run to a stairwell then use the horn of terror to scare them up the stairs. In conjunction with a minor investment in elbereth later you can fear the horn immune trolls up the stairs. This dents your peak combat power a modest bit but is made up for by floor drops and remaining mindful that you're not as diesel as you could be in exchange for being able to disengage from bad fights.
Others may skip opportunist's key extra attack to get more melee and possibly perception's focus attack to gain additional accuracy for crits.
Others like a stealth archer are avoiding enemies they can't kill and sniping the ones they can. sometimes outrunning and using vanish to fix a botched job. Others using elbereth, slumber/majesty, and horn of terror or lorien to sleep. One highly unstable build combined making two +2 accuracy rings for your archer then working towards a grace/smithing kit to make accuracy or damage boosted boosted artifact armors and rings provided it gets enough slaying weapons, boosted/double-boosted floor gear to survive and 3/4-use forges/staves of revelation to do something with it. Since grace backwashed into smithing/Aule and song for elbereth/will for horn to rubberband enemies long enough to shoot them down or to scare them off the floor. Until eventually you had a potently strong stealth archer that'd chunk enemies, machinegun them, put them to sleep, move back and repeat with that juicy sleeping penalty setting their evasion to -5 and the funny artifact arrow gigacrit

From the standpoint of an avoidant stealth "diver", everyone reached the same conclusion you did. You eventually bump into fucking birds, fucking wargs, or get vibe checked by the high perception monsters that start screaming bloody murder. You can't have your cake of combat skills and abilities and eat the stealth and escape/utility abilities cake too. Even when you try and you do, eventually an outlier vibe checks you or there was such cosmic luck blessing it the run's drops and spawns that it may never happen again. A combat focus like previously leverages the huge initial damage of a focus attack assassination stab into opportunist second attack to drop the enemy's morale enough that they flee if they aren't dead, will flee in a couple hits if they aren't afraid, and if they still wont, you just use ?Terror, sing Elbereth or stop fighting undead and horrors jesus. Since a diver isn't doing a combat focus they would try all sorts of combinations of stats and starting skill/ability allocations but everyone ended up at the same destination. At least 4 dex, buy disguise and exchange places on character gen. What this did was even if you did get pincered in a hall, you could exchange places your way through even if you got beat on pretty hard. As the game progressed you would develop evasion to live, buy dodging, sprint, and leap to help with escapes.and perception's keen senses and listen to help notice fast monsters with your ears, not your face.

Eye for detail also helped with the doors and your low xp pool since being trapped isn't the time to look for secret doors. Now you can try picking up archery and sniping frail things, leverage slaying weapons, heavy weapons, and swapping armor on/off to cherrypick killable enemies for some xp here and there, you can try running all over the floor for more loot and on-sight xp but others simply dived down as fast as they found a stair or chasm. Nothing was really wrong, it's just an exchange of benefits and costs that makes you better at some stuff and worse at others.
They'd dive deep, scum 900'-950', Find a sharpness weapon, pile up consumables and slumber staves, pump will and channeling then go sleep morgoth once they hit the turncount limit. Sometimes you got Angrist and enough slumber staves sometimes you didn't. Plenty of diver speedrun luckshitters on the ladder to mald about.
Overall divers weren't bad but you had a crunch between getting Listen so you don't get corridor raped by fast enemies but enemies are noticing your low stealth with every desperate scramble to the next stair/chasm and the high cost of exchange places then listen on a character getting only a drip-feed of xp who still needs evasion to survive said exchange places. Especially before the expensive lore master.
Doriath lights up if a web trap is within like, 3 tiles? Keep one handy so you don't get pranked since your low str makes it hard to get out and your halved evasion means it's going to rape you when it walks into you and you didn't have lorien/slumber to put it to sleep in that 1 turn.
As a side note for trap damage, chasms deal 24, stair collapse/horn deal 12, pits deal 8, spiked pit deal 28, dart trap 15, poison chest traps/potion deal up to 40

But, there is another path... One many would consider, Unnatural...
Feanor 1/3/4/6 3 melee/evasion, 7 smithing Jeweler. Channeling shortly after up to you. Smith Horn of Blasting, +0 blessed realm (reduce the special bonus in the smithing menu), horn of terror. Your goal is to roam around cherrypicker killing things by throwing weapons, using your bow, swapping on better armor then taking it off after, and generally scraping some xp with minimal to zero damage taken. You gotta remember you have to stay above 13 hp or you can kill yourself. Once you run out of options, just shaft yourself by firing the horn of blasting '>'. This lets you scrape more xp than just immediately shafting yourself straight down. Not that you can't but the pre-600' floors are pretty gone from min-depth by the time you get good gear from the basement and come back up. On the other hand, you're wasting turns on small amounts of xp that only push a couple skill/ability benchmarks and the gear is trash opposed to deeper drops. There's no wrong choices, only happy rergets.
Special note, it's up to you if you want 950's better loot versus the risk of being unable to shaft if you fuck up. Especially before you can reliably sleep max will enemies.
As you go deeper, Get stealth disguise keen senses listen lore mastery with the occasional willpower to keep up. You don't need to guzzle lembas for the drained grace at the start just eat one and each time you get hungry just know the lower your will and drained grace is you might need to blasting multiple times. You have to treat it as unreliable and shaft early not after your face is axed off The reason Listen is done early is because of how the PDF details stealth mechanics. Distance is essentially pseudo-stealth for the point of detection so it's better to get the fuck out of the way than it is to have a crap ton of stealth or sprint and still get run over by a werewolf or vampire in the dark

Pivot to elbereth and lorien. Get gear on 900-950' then go back up for kill xp then head back down. If you get Lorien in the endgame transition you can hoover up 900-950 then build out into stabbing or flaming arrows later. Bear in mind at the throne room you need middling melee or you're ngmi cutting out the sils without sharpness/narsil/etc. Esp for 2/3 sils. Up to your placebo belief if you believe in snapping a different weapon on the second sil onwards then swapping back to Angrist/sharpness.
You can make all sorts of arguments for picking up archery>flaming arrows early and going ham on xp. Getting assassination and stabbing a lot of frail shit along the way. Melee's cross-investment for sil stabbing versus archery's halved evasion penalty letting it function better at lower investment, and so on. Elbereth>Lorien archery works well. Elbereth>Lorien stabbing works well. Pure thief build works well with a stronger sleep and lower detection rates. It's hard to really find where the line on killing skills and making back enough xp from that falls
For the throne room walk around putting everything to sleep, find the traps and not with your face. Unlock doors, spend the time revealing the secret doors ahead of time for when you need to dip. Doesn't hurt to check the chests for sharpness but at this point you either don't need them or it's unlikely they'll save you. As a funny fact, lorien the enemy to sleep, if you exchange places and your stealth is enough that it can't detect you it'll stay unwary then go back to sleep next time lorien rolls to sleep it. Also works on walking into webs but please don't 1str is death. Personally the chance of it walking into you isn't worth the risk but you do you if you're blocked off. Speaking of exchange places, you'll want to pick it up at some point. It depends on how much risk you want to mitigate versus Listen+Lorien getting strong enough to keep you safe.

The point of weapons is that you can get buffs on them. A +0 dagger of poison kills almost everything up to D11, and most of lair. Where that doesn't work, there negative, electric, and holy. With investment, a mid-teir weapon beats unarmed until like lvl 16 or something, particularly if the weapon hits mindelay quickly.

At endgame, unarmed is king, mostly, but you can't get rF, rC, str+6 on a fist. Slots matter, and you're sacrificing one.

Right, but you're much more likely to get a +0 venom.
After that, you're much more likely to get a +5 freeze/ect on a weapon you've trained.
Somewhere between lair and vaults you're likely to get an ok ego on a reasonable weapon, so you can dump your enchant weapon scrolls on that and have a +10 demon whip of draining.

This makes you way stronger in the early and mid game, which is good.

However, you can still just use a +10 demon whip while training unarmed, and drop the whip when you fist is good enough.
And the +0 dagger doesn't actually need skill investment.

So overall you're not taking that large a handycap by investing in unarmed, and you're not dependent on as much RNG. It's just that +10 is really good for a minute.

Now, to compare this to the totally reliable, never fails decision to pick up the strongest base in the game with full enchants and a brand on a char fresh out of orc: With the same investment but into maces, a +9 demon whip of draining is ~72 per decaaut, and if you stopped at mindelay then literally the best weapon in the game is doing less than my fist was.

D:10 finished and the best* weapon offering looks like a gray partisan, and prior to that it was a +3 mace. It's not looking too good for the metal stick swinging crowd.
Versus 14 UC which is 17 damage, ~.75 delay, +6 to-hit, and a 25% chance to offhand punch for 12. Which is it better than lightly enchanted and branded 2nd rate bases, and a hell of a lot better than what I had to choose from. Daggers are really just for wizards who don't bother putting any points into any melee skill at all. Then after earlygame you just treat your weapon as a jewelry slot and hold anything that gives a decent bonus like a stave or an artifact with resistances. And for everyone else there's polearms(your fists can't attack over the head of summons) and axes (you fists can't do 600% damage when surrounded)
I agree basically all other melee weapons don't have a purpose, like who's using sword out here seriously?

And I have to assume shapeshifter is now some weird forced hybrid class like everything else is nowadays and you're supposed to basically be a monk/generalist mage who swaps forms to cast.

Just bear in mind you're looking at 9,500 xp from stair xp and <6,800 xp from item id. You're trying to get everything going within that pool
Smith Horn of Blasting, +0 blessed realm (reduce the special bonus in the smithing menu), horn of terror. Eat one lembas to recover 1 grace and repeat when hungry. Hopefully you find grace pots first but whatever.

Run around floors for loot and on-sight xp until you get detected and can't escape then use the horn of blasting firing > to shaft yourself. You need at least 13 hp to avoid death and it's unreliable early on while your will is low and grace is drained. Enemies like to path between stairs so once you find some of the others you can swerve a bit away from them to reduce new spawn encounters. You can fight a bit situationally like battle-axing a serpent or abusing slaying weapons and some swapped on armor.
In general read the PDF it details most of the mechanics for stuff like stealth and skill checks. Remember you can 'l'ook at enemies to see if there's loot under them. It'll happen with thorn monsters rarely for example.
XP-allocation wise you want to get channeling and some will, 3 stealth and disguise then start raising perception for listen. You really need listen for werewolves and vampires in corridors. Eventually lore mastery helps with getting xp from items you can't steal and freeing up space.

After the forge and through the midgame you can't really die unless you get greedy over trash that is nothing compared to what you'll get later. Once you stop playing stupid games with wargs while grace drained and low will you'll manage.
In the 800's or so you're going to have a vulnerable spot where you're still low on xp. You're going to use listen and lurk near stairs to ?terror or elbereth perceptive or fast enemies up the stairs. save up XP and get song of Lorien and a crap ton of song+song/grace equips to put enemies to sleep. Once you can put most enemies to sleep you're just sleeping and stealing while running away or shafting from high will enemies. I'll stress again, hold onto and watch a doriath weapon in your inventory. Webs will fuck your face and deeper depths have harder to detect traps. It can pay to search a couple times each step in vaults since there are traps there you just haven't detected them yet.
Go as fast as you feel comfortable, 950' has the best loot but you can't shaft escape anymore, you can't escape from the very quick darting horrors and their high willpower and high perception is really rough if you haven't gotten lorien, stabbing, or archery together. There's also vampire lords who are fast and have high willpower as well as ururaukos, gwathraukos, and various uniques that will demand low 20's effective song to very rarely sleep them.
As you accrue xp and gear you'll get strong enough to decide if you want to keep looping the bottom of the dungeon to gamble for extra strong rare gear or if you'll go back up the dungeon to chase kill xp instead of equipment. Again there's no wrong choices it's just utilizing what you've strengthened and minding what became weaker as a consequence.

For the throne room the targets are 28 stealth and 30+ song with equips and pots if you're going to lorien the throne room, steal the sil and run. Less works but the lower it is the smaller the chance and the further you have to run while buttchugging !quickness and shit waking up to block you and possibly hitting you on exchange places. When your weapon breaks there's a chance that shards will smack morgoth and wake him up so be ready to have to run while resisting his slow+lock door song until you put him back to sleep which again is a stealth+song check since you have to both put him to unwary then sleep without being detected.
The ascent is even more of a snore than usual. Just sing silence, swap to lorien when you need to keep something out of the way and blasting yourself if you get trapped. You either got enough grace that your song regen is high enough or you can swap to regen during dead periods to refill. The stupid exit dog can be slept so just pot up and sprint out.

In general sil gameplay,
Throw throwing weapons then later use your bow. Even at 0 skill it still adds a tiny bit of survival chance that adds up. Later when you get concentration it builds conc stacks which is valuable for dangerous enemies.
Some unintelligent monsters like spiders wont chase outside of LoS. You can use this on stuff like spider hatchlings by getting poisoned then stepping around a corner to disengage so you can quaff id slow poison without dying.

At lair you can get a few points in everything else for cheap, even a pure caster with max apts is paying through the nose for every level of casting skills by then, you can like quadruple your health just completing lair alone if you switch skill training for a bit.
Armor is iffy for high level spells, shields less so but still an issue if you go too big, but dodging and fighting are free real estate and you should definitely pick them up.
Picking up a steam dragon scales or troll skin and a buckler and like 4 skill levels makes you ridiculously tankier for like no investment.

You can throw weapons at thorns and use a bow, even a shortbow to kill or at least wound them if you're shit at combat. If you throw anything even a filthy rag to place an item under them first your ammo will pile up where you can recover it instead of being trapped under them.
When you're exiting a corridor into a room you can sometimes get a free attack as the enemy pack will try to flank you by you can just move diagonally after the attack to prevent the flanker from attacking. Above your 75% hp a pack wont charge into your corridor letting you weaken them with throwing/archery or heal up after a minor hit. It also lets you loop a charge attack by waiting until they're 1 tile away, stepping up and hitting them, stepping back and repeating until you kill them all off. Non-warg intelligent monsters will try to open a door you close and if there's two of them the other will step on the door letting you force a 1v1.
ctrl+dir lets you attack without moving in case you're confused near a chasm. It will still close then bash a door or attempt to disarm a trap though. and if you fail to disarm the trap it will move you onto it and trigger it. Like a false floor...
special note, if you have a mattock near quartz or belegost near any wall you will dig the wall, it will give the enemies and attack of opportunity, and you will turbo die.
Gaurin in inventory works like a digger normally.
Tunneling rings are NOT cumulative. You can't forge a <+2> and a <+1> then go tear granite up.

Melting mithril does NOT consume forge charges

Enemy flanking penalty is added to the enemy accuracy in the combat window. +2/ea for furthest side, +1/ea for flanking
You can maneuver to pin enemy archers in a corridor corner or stand in an L from a corridor entrance to bait the archer to it then move towards the wall to move them into the room then you can close to them to pin them against the wall and kill. For the easterling unique you just have to deal with his evasive loop getting one attack out of every like 4-5 turns. Exchange places does not cause an attack in the throne room but you do need enough stealth to avoid alert rather than unwary.
Assassin does NOT work on the second Two-Wep
Assassin does NOT apply to throwing attacks
Assassin does NOT give bonuses to rapid attack second hit
Assassin does NOT give bonuses to charge attack. They are separate manual special attacks
Assassination attack and charge attack conflict. Have to leave stealth mode the turn you attack to still charge. It's just 5 acc less anyway.
SINGING LOWERS YOUR STEALTH FOR ASSASSINATION AND ALL PURPOSES REALLY. SING AND LOOK AT CHAR INFO
Singing silence reduces Morgoth's song strength by half your song score but this isn't really relevant in most situations since killdudes are probably amped up on pots and sharpness+slaying and stealth are desperately trying to put everything back to sleep.
Charge does NOT give bonuses to opportunist or activate rapid/two-wep/whirlwind/etc. attacks

Focus attack bonuses don't carry over to the extra rapid-attack/two-wep attack. You can also toggle forgo bonus attacks on non-alert enemies off. Most of the time you want it on but if you don't care about aggroing it'll give you extra attacks from zone of control, opportunist, etc. on unaware and sleeping enemies. Another funny stealth trick is that sleeping dragons aren't super perceptive plus you get a lot of message warnings as it gets close to waking up then becoming alert. So while you might not have a lot of stealth in heavy armor, but with modest stealth, disguise, and taking your heavy armor off to reduce your stealth penalties you can successfully steal items from small dragon hoards and even part of Glaurung's great hoard as long as you get out of sight once they start waking up then return later to steal ore. You can end up getting consumables or a number of exceptional items.
It will kill you if they wake up and you do it on fire dragons w/o double rF+ and even then the slash can gut you. The cold drakes can confuse or entrance you pretty hard without good will and clarity+free action before clawing your helpless face off. And there's also wandering enemies running up from behind and screaming or trapping you. But sometimes you can just strip, slide in, grab an atrifact or something and slide out alive instead of a 0 stealth heavy chud having to fight and die trying to get something great from an early dragon.

You're not losing much, they're pretty weak early on.
11 armor is a 0.5x bonus to your base ac.
Dodging is about 0.5 EV per with 14 dex and medium enc.
Shields is about 0.5 SH per with buckler/kite shields too.
So in middlin early game gear, 11 skill is about the same as the equivalent defense jewellery(prot and evasion rings, reflection amulet). Meanwhile there are big dick investments like the same sp gets 18 Fighting for like 50% max hp, +9 to-hit, and +30% damage.

And for other comparisons, 11 evo or throw is doubling your wand or jav damage and giving you 3 poison stacks from darts, 11 stealth makes it hard to even intentionally body pull mobs, and 11 invo lets you ask kami-sama to win fights for you.

I feel like Qud has the best interface with its general-purpose interaction pattern and its look mode. Hate when a game just dumps like 30 hotkeys on you. Or gives you a one-line look mode. Qud makes it easier to explore the map and mechanics and learn as you go. The only problem is look mode doesn't give you enough technical detail about most things that you encounter for the first time. They should just put the online wiki files inside the game and make it searchable.

Stone Shard just released a new update!
What do we think about it?

The last time I played was during the relatively recent passive update, which I liked quite a bit (the dwarven huntress was exactly the archetype the game was missing for me).
I started a new run recently, died in a cave once, but otherwise it's pretty cool.
They did something with the AI, so hunting is way easier now.
Sometimes I see ranged enemies just sit there at the end of LoS and do nothing.

I assume you already know there's a prepared quick swap slot on your character sheet, but if you weren't aware then now you are. That level 1 bonus means if you have a melee weapon in your prepared slot and you bump an enemy in melee it'll use the melee weapon without making you swap to it, which basically gets nullified by the level 2 version of the perk but it's a little extra bonus for the level 1 version

1. which country

2. just kidding america is the only country. In america, we're allowing companies to buy up all the electricity and transform it directly into bit coins. On the whole, we vote to tax people with money less and give people in need less services. What in the fuck makes you think we're going to encourage households who haven't installed AC to install and then pay to run AC? Do you think the government is going to pay for the electric bill? Shit's expensive.

3. actual poor people in contries actually can't afford it and also are more likely to live in hotter places. Do the math.

4.Running more AC would hypothetically use more energy and therefore make more gas, meaning it would accelerate the issue overall. This effect may be minimal, but is another reason for people in charge to not want to make the poors comfortable.

5. insulation is more energy efficient than AC, and such region-specific physical solutions would be preferable, if any solution at all were implemented.

>there's a second cataclysm dda
heh. making a paid version is what ruins it though. who wants to work on it unless they get paid for it? someone else did it so why can't they? and then once a person tries what if they don't get as many sales as the other one? do they keep working or do they give up and now you have another version of CDDA but it ends up going nowherem
