I wish it was a traditional ARPG instead. In popular roguelites like Hades or Slay the Spire you select your upgrades after clearing the floor/room. Hell Clock takes you out of the moment and pauses the game every time you level up to select from a number of upgrades. These upgrades are also inconsequential to your character build and temporary so it's just a huge waste of time and interrupts the actual gameplay. This works in Vampire Survivors because it's a casual game that plays itself, not so much here. There's other annoying things about it but I'll stop typing.

I wish StS had literally any competition in whatever its genre is because 2 is years away from being launched

The game started as an intented slowdown/return to roots of arpg with more meaningful pacing and combat, the intention was you'd fight much fewer mobs that were more engaging and get better loot.

Instead they just tacked on poe1 endgame systems and then fucked the entire game around balancing for that

All the previews leading up to release of poe2 were isolationist kino, paced great, fewer more interesting encounters. They turned the game back into cookie clicker just before early access because I think they panicked that the poe playerbase would hate the game. However, the player movement speed and the combat attacks and animations are so slow and dogshit compared to monsters that it forced game design to have to make things about spamming aoe's and particles again to compete, so effectively all the 'make melee great again' shit they were spouting for a good 2 years became moot because melee was effectively deleted in poe2. All melee is ranged magic and there's barely any melee weapon types, pointing clearly to an in company bias to want to work on spells/ranged aspects.

tl;dr the development is confused, many staff have left and going by recent interviews, even lead positions like lead level designer are in charge by people who only joined as recently as 2019. PoE2 is destined for failure as it cannot commit to a singular idea and vision as it's been changed hands and muddied and is now on the path to just being PoE1 but harder to run.

Well then it was doomed from the start and all roads would have lead to this outcome, so basically development was wishful thinking, they wanted to court the souls crowd who want more meaningful depth but then also trying to appease the poe crowd who want hamsterwheels so we just get a slow annoying hamsterwheel.

Between elden ring nighgreign, no rest for the wicked nioh and poe2 exists the perfect looter combat game with infinite replayability and it doesn't exist yet.

I'm almost positive at this point some chinese studios is probably making this exact game in UE5 right now. Infact, it might even be Tencent with access to PoE source code just stealing it as chinese do and just make the perfect game.

Main thing I'm realising just now about poe/poe2 is how fucking flat the games are.

D5 and NRFTW and TQ2 the world/environment has all this depth where you're walking up and down terrain and looking over the edge down to lower areas you were before etc, PoE2 feels literally like there's no Z axis in the game like you exist on a literal flat plane.

Going back and looking at poe2 after playing TQ2 all day the game looks kind of fucked up like I just lost an eyeball and there's no visual depth

Someone on the team clearly wanted to make procedural looter souls infused poe which if done correctly is based, but the problem is PoE's monsters have absolutely no AI or routines what so ever, they can't even strafe or walk backwards, all they can do is literally run forward and spam the same literal 1 maybe 2 attacks.
Common enemies in souls games have more effort put in than entire bosses in PoE. Regular arse undead soldier looking enemies can climb ladders open doors, throw bombs, pull out bows, parry you, heal on you, some will strafe and hang back turtling with a shield while others rush in

That kind of enemy ai dynamism is key to a game you want to have be more slow because you have breathing room to just always engage and slam. In PoE2 the opposite is the case, you are constantly reactive, every single enemy is immediately aware of your presence from offscreen and they all just run forward towards you like metal particles towards a magnet, you just get a swarm funneled on you and your only solution is delete the screen before this happens.

PoE2's problems are it did simply looked at dark souls from a thin perspective of "just make mobs kill you in 2 hits and like, checkpoints and a dodge roll, that's what makes those games".

PoE2 can be saved but they need to actually fix the monsters and make them do more shit, have downtime and then pump player up to more anime levels instead of the sludgy dogshit it is now.

Sure it looks nice, but its not what anyone would choose for a game. It makes nice screenshots or whatever but playing it, it's a chore. The bloom and glow and painterly style of everything makes it hard to visually read, a fucking random rock will have a highlight on it with all this bloom that is just as bright and focus stealing as a literal magic projectile. the truth lines in that the player itself is just hyper clunky and slow, poe2 mobs aren't particularly fast or special, the player character is just literally slower than dark souls 1 character in a game with faster than devil may cry speed enemies that can only do one thing and thats run and attack

to fix poe2 they need to make enemies sometimes be scared of you/backpedal away or be cautious compared to others, having mobs that are kinda apprehensive and then you just slam them feels nice and makes your gameplay feel more like you are hte one being the aggressor in some situations but in poe2 all you are is reactive constantly, being reactive the entire time you play game leads to major fatique and the vibe is a 'non chill' experience. Even in souls games where things can be stressful there's chill moments where you are the one leading and pushing, in poe2 its opposite you are constantly stressed with a cloud of fuck moving towards you constantly and you need to be ready to not be one shot

Is it even possible to get a marauder that is OP? I am looking at all the top ranked marauders on ninja and these people must die like 5 times every map. It seems a lot like their starting position on the board is one of the worst possible. They can’t use chaos inoculation which is like the most broken as fuck keystone. And they also can’t get a huge blue shield, life just doesnt stack as well. And they can’t get any spell suppression without sacrificing wayyy too much. The only thing they really have going for them was decent ascendancy talents, but mercenaries make up a lot for that. Seems like a pretty shit class in the current state of the game.

but its like if you combined a whole acts worth of zones together into 1 map
but even though its so big having no movespeed doesnt feel bad, like moving through the world actually feels good
also there are waypoints/checkpoints all over, i'd say they are about a 1 minute walk from each other(if the zone is cleared of enemies
but i often find myself just walking even though i could tp to a waypoint closer to my objective

the one major pain point of the game so far is itemization is total garbage and clicking on stuff feels bad, like picking up items just sucks, all the name tags for items on the ground or interactable objects feels very floaty
i think last epoch had a similar problem when it was in early access.
also menu navigation is a pain
and controls are very bare bones
it took like 2 hours of playing and fiddling to finally make the controls feel "ok"
it has wasd but you can tell the game wasn't designed to accommodate it, like they saw poe2 have it and then last epoch quickly shove it in and they scrambled to add it even though its not ready

also the whole passive/skill system feels like its going to changed alot before 1.0

the game has been in development for a few years at this point and it feels like all of that time they were just working on the art and design and audio of the game and all of the actual gameplay has been "done" in the last 6 months.

but so far i'd say $30 is a great price.

Dawn of the hunt shows that they're making the same mistake with poe 2 that they did with poe1, just adding a bunch of sub-par mechanics into the game until it becomes a complete mess of a billion half assed shit overwhelming the player.

I still remember the launch of poo2 EA and how much I nagged some friends to buy it so we could play together, only managed to convince one. He rolled a warrior, I picked monk. I will never forget when he picked EQ and used it once on a pack of mobs. Silence filled our discord, he quit the game on the spot and refunded it. I felt ashamed for simping for this godawful game. I never managed to earn that lost trust.

after doing some pondering I have come to the conclusion TQ2 being boring isn't just because it's slow.

The issue with large maps is designers fall into the trap of making it look exactly the same throughout with nothing to break it up visually, think that final map in Act 2 of PoE on the carriage thing. Just goes on too fucking long for no fucking reason and there is nothing going on to break it up visually.
