Tunneling is effective because the best slowdown in the game is having fewer survivors in the game.
As a result survivors seethe about it because it will typically result in them losing the game. You will also get lots of altruistic survivors throwing themselves at you trying to save the guy you're trying to get out the game giving you lots of free hits and even less people doing gens.
Survivors hate killers winning and hate killers being effective so will whine about it as they have been doing for the entire life of the game.
If you want to really annoy them after the start crying post game just ask them why you should make the game easier for them.

I figured this was moreso the case but that also sounded too dumb to be a frequent issue because spending the whole game chasing a single person sounds really unfun and an easy way for everyone else to just fix the generators and win.

hard tunneling is making this your strategy from the get-go. down a survivor, hook them, proxy the hook and if a save comes through, hard focus the dude that got unhooked. repeat until they're dead, and then do whatever you want and win the game.
soft tunneling or opportunistic tunneling is just taking it as it comes. survivor makes a stupid play and gives you a free tunnel? you take it and win the game. need a survivor dead right now? look for the tunnel. shit like that.
survivors won't really put in the effort to differentiate between the two and will get mad either way.
the hatred of the strategy comes from the fact that it sucks to be tunneled because you don't really get to play*, and that it is very strong ("sweaty"/"tryhard"-fodder) to the point where it hopelessly BTFOs the average survivor team. most teams have a clear weak link (or multiple) that's easy to abuse and tunnel out of the game, and the game becomes incredibly hard to win for them once a survivor has died
*ironically in the comp space it's the opposite. tunneling and camping is expected and players find it fun to be on the receiving end of the tunnel, as the game revolves around them and they're going to have teammates who can come through and make plays to keep them in the game for as long as possible

tl;dr if survivors hate nurse because she's disproportionately strong, they hate tunneling for the same reason (even when they get themselves tunneled by playing retarded)

Doing my 6 monthly "let's try playing this game again, the videos look fun". Often last a few hours at most. We'll see this time. My strategy? It's basically just get hits and hook don't think about the overall game. 1000hr player so MMR is probably high which I why I get fucked every time I play again.

You can make plenty of builds that "work" on every killer without using top tier perks, they just wouldn't be any good compared to something that actually uses the killer's kit or is just comprised of perks that are good on their own.
Scourge hooks without pain res is possible with compass, floods, shrine and lethal. No gift of pain because some killers make survs stay injured like plague or legion.
Hex with ruin, pentimento, thrill and plaything or blood favor. No devour because universal includes non-m1 killers.
Genkick with brine, overcharge/pop, oppression and fire up.
Endgame perks like remember me and no way out.
Plus any combination of "comfort perks" you'd like that just solve things you often have trouble with, like forever entwined, agitation, predator, etc.

DBD lost its appeal when it empowered survivors to the point where they seek out the killer

What fps cap do you use? Because I've been using 120 for a long time and I had various issues, like not being able to hit vaulting survivors, bouncing every time unless they are at the very start of the animation. Made some loops literally unplayable. With everyone on great ping. I almost had an aneurysm when it happened today 3 times in a row, and started trying everything. I knew fps affected some weird shit, people made videos about it. So I dialed it back to 60, feels like shit, sluggish, but voila, suddenly the problem disappears.

Ghoul is a higher mobility Legion in some ways. A lot of that is also a way that makes Blight as good as he is, so there is a somewhat understandable reason for him to be disliked, even if I personally don't have anything against him

Would punish survivors for getting caught and the killer to look for others. I feel like there should be a similar system to what Devour Hope has since it always forces killers out to search for another survivor for a great reward of instakill or mori.
Another way to fix this "issue" would be to implement a change where you sit on the hook for 5 minutes and if the killer plans to just camp you then the gens would be finished.
I don't know if there's a perfect solution to this but all we know is that tunneling is simply beneficial for killer since he just gets rid of problems one by one, and making the game 1v3 does a huge change to the game's pace. There are several ideas to implement a new killer, perk or map idea such as when exit gates are opened, survivors have limited time to escape otherwise it will begin to get flooded with zombies that will begin to either block the entire exit gate or flood the entire map (which killer can kill just like Nemesis) and will have to evacuate towards the other exit gate. Why Balanced Landing? I find that it's a rare enough occurence to happen, that it's not just

because his saw isn't really that threatening against experienced survivors. windows shut him down and although it's a little risky, good survivors can stun you out of your saw instead of feeding you the pallet break. even if they do feed the pallet break, there's often enough resources that it doesn't matter too much. they can stall you out for long enough to lose the game.
and without his saw he is nothing. i know that sounds incredibly reductive but i mean this as in he has no mobility, no secondary objective, and no real anti-loop. just a chase power, and survivor skill can make his chase power feel very weak.
not to say there's nothing going for him. you can't unhook in front of bubba and if you go down near basement and he plays around it, that's GG. but that can't make anyone A tier.

If you're someone who complains about badasses being added to the game and that they shouldn't be in it then it's on you for not playing them canonically.

I suppose just watch gameplays of what they do. I'd say tru3 for strategy maybe or unironically Otz since he explains a lot. As a killer you don't make the path but survivors do, your job is sort of to catch them asap, get rid of the problem and manage generators. Pay attention if it isn't a retard swf that will only try to blind you (which wins you games) and try to play around a 3 gen. My personal advice is to hook survivors to the nearest hook but don't go to the opposite way of where generators are being done. Hook should always be on the way of where you plan to go next because every second matters.
