OpenMystery is an open-source PC port of H*gwarts M*stery, made in Unity.
It runs like an emulator, and is developed using top-down reverse-engineering methods.
Thus, via control of the engine, it can remove the annoying mobile mechanics.
It can also play new content (the main quest, TLSQs, SQs, quidditch, creature quests, dates, etc.) whenever the base game updates.

On a typical August night, Chiara Lobosca - a recent graduate of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry - was enjoying her weekend. It would usually be accurate to refer to the woman as a timid witch, werewolf, and Healer at St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries, but such a description seemed woefully unfitting in her current state: vigorously singing along to a particularly explicit, anti-establishment number at a variety punk concert, while headbanging with the best of them. "The best of them" being, of course, two notorious fellow alumni, Merula Snyde and Anon Ymous. The rivalry between the two during their school years (and in particular, Merula's reputation and temperament) caused Chiara to steer well clear of the Slytherin witch, but a chance meeting between the two at a similar concert several weeks prior sparked an unexpected acquaintanceship.

Chiara's mind drifted back, and she thought of the amethyst-eyed witch beside her. They had bonded over their common love of punk rock, but not much else. Thus, not long ago, Chiara decided to bolster their relationship by adding another element that the duo had in common: their connection to her prodigious friend, Anon. She could scarcely think of anyone who could have predicted the transformation of his enmity with Merula into alliance, then friendship, then romance. Chiara was delighted when he accepted her invitation to join them on what proved to be a very eventful night, but she certainly hadn't anticipated how she would begin the next day - in bed with the couple! She was so afraid that the condition in which she had reported for duty that morning (late, somewhat disheveled and incompletely washed) would lead to disciplinary action that she had been working like a dog since then to prove her dedication to the job, not being able to relax until tonight. In the face of all that, though, she still couldn't help but smile when she recalled the memory of that amorous meeting. The vague memory, that is; the same liquor that had magnified their desire had also blurred their recollection of its results.

Chiara realized that, not wishing to be idle until the next act began, her companions had become affectionate. Even in the dim light, she found her gaze drawn to the striking hue of Merula's eyes and the lustful motions of Anon's similarly powerful jawline. Transfixed, she stewed in her own reignited libido for what felt like an hour, eventually concluding:

As they passed under a streetlamp, Chiara saw her chance.

"Ow! What was that for?" Merula snapped as she recoiled.

"Sorry! I was just, um, brushing some dirt off your jacket." Chiara said - simultaneously, in her panic. With her eyes pointed firmly at her feet and her arms behind her back, her similar age to her interrogator was all that would have prevented a passer-by from assuming that she was being admonished by her parents for some misdemeanor.

Merula raised an eyebrow and paused for a moment, before smiling. "Hmm. Well, I suppose we can't expect the riff-raff to keep pristine, eh? Thanks."

As they resumed their journey, Chiara felt the tension in her body vanish. Being with Anon often helped to mitigate her anxieties, after all. She even began to participate in her pals' bantering about the performances, forgetting for a blissful few minutes the secret she was keeping from him and his girlfriend. All the same, before long, a fork in the path prompted her to bid them farewell, and continue her journey alone.

Opting for a red, floral sundress to take advantage of the remaining summer weather, as well as to evoke a somewhat romantic mood, she assessed its fit in her mirror. But that wasn't all that was unusual about her appearance. Her eyes, normally a mild blue, had taken on a prominent purple, and her once-ivory hair was now a rich mahogany, with a fiery streak of ginger at the front. "It isn't messy like Merula's usually is," the witch thought, "but I guess being more feminine does match the dress."

That deviation reminded Chiara of how she came to be in this state. Unwilling to take the time or the risk that brewing Polyjuice potion demanded, she had elected to enlist the assistance of another of her friends: the talented potioneer Penny Haywood. As luck would have it, the fellow Hufflepuff did have a small amount in stock, but only a slightly experimental version; a combination of their friendship and Chiara's ace-in-the-hole - the "puppy-dog eyes" tactic - had earned the white-haired woman a hefty discount on the top-shelf price. "You still owe me big time," Penny had declared, "especially since you won't even tell me what you want this for. It had better not be anything nefarious, though knowing you, it probably won't be too bad." Great, another person to keep the secret from.

Penny's complaint was contrasted by some good news. The blonde had also assured Chiara that the modifications she'd made (which were aimed at increasing the potion's longevity) were minor, and that any side effects should therefore be similarly mild. Concluding that her medical training would see her through should the worst happen, Chiara had accepted the danger and claimed her prize.

Satisfied that she had everything she needed, she took a look around, and soon found her target, walking homeward with a backpack on, though the direction of her approach meant that she was behind him. Chiara quickened her pace to catch up, and once she was close enough, called out:

The wizard spun around to face the woman who had greeted him.

"Well, well, look at you," he replied, stepping forward to cup the side of her jaw, while tracing the ridge of her nose with his thumb. Not anticipating the physical contact, Chiara felt blood rushing to her face; she feigned a small cough as an excuse to cover it with her own hand before it became obvious.

"What's wrong? Can't you recognize the visage of the great Merula Snyde?"

On reaching a side road, Anon turned to face his companion, handing her his backpack.

Chiara did as instructed, sighting a choice spot and moving as quickly as her sandals would let her to secure it, before reaching into Anon's backpack. Evidently it had been enchanted, as she was able to pull out a large towel and parasol, as well as a basket containing drink bottles and sandwiches. Once everything was set up, Chiara lay on the towel, opened up her purse, and after verifying that she wasn't being watched, swiftly took another dose of Polyjuice. After that, she allowed herself to relax, her idle thoughts inevitably centering on Anon.

Just as she was about to go looking for him, he returned with the promised prizes. "I'm sorry if I kept you waiting long," he remarked as he sat beside her. "Lovely weather, by the way, eh? Your dress, too. Did you get it just for today? I haven't seen you in it before."

"Well I always have to look my best, don't I?" Chiara responded between licks. "Not that it's hard for a woman like me, of course."

The conversation continued to flow naturally between the two, and Chiara felt increasingly at ease. Being such good friends with Anon, it was hardly unusual for her to spend time with him in a casual setting, but one-on-one hangouts like this were rare. She was almost blindsided by how close she felt to him. Thankfully, he didn't ask any questions about "her" (that is to say, Merula's) life, and she was able to relate more than one anecdote as "a funny story Chiara told me."

Hours later, after a mixture of chatting and sunbathing, their supplies were exhausted and the Sun was noticeably lower in the sky. Anon turned to the brunette beside him.

"To be honest, as nice as this has been, I'm kind of bored of the beach now. What do you think?"
"I see what you mean, Anon, but I don't really want to go home yet."
"How about we just walk around for a bit, then? See what we can see."
"Okay, then. Let's do it."

Thus, they packed their belongings and left the seaside behind them. Visiting a few local landmarks, and seeing where else their legs would carry them, Chiara at last remembered her mission, having lost track of it in her merriment. On a secluded path, she readied herself, and stopped Anon.

Anon's comforting smile transformed into a devious grin. "Ah yes, that. Yeah, I hope you two had as much fun as I did."

Once again, Chiara had to conceal a blush with her hand.

"So, am I up for another three-way? Sure! I don't mind. I'd have to ask her, of course, but there's a good chance she'll agree, too."

Chiara could barely contain her elation. She suddenly embraced Anon, crying "Yes!" with equal enthusiasm. She then realized the possible implications of his remark. Appreciative of the fact that their hug hid her scarlet face from his view, she had to defend herself.

"I wouldn't... think that Chiara would do that sort of thing with just anyone, though."
"Yeah, I know. It's just because we're such good friends, that's all."

Relieved that Anon didn't think of her as an easy woman, she allowed the warmth of his body on hers, and the gentle motion of his hand on her scalp, to render her calm and content.

After lingering for a little longer, they ended their embrace and headed homeward.

Back in town, the pair enjoyed a leisurely stroll, recounting the day's events while snacking on some further refreshments that Anon had bought them.

"So, what's your verdict on the day we've had?" Anon asked. "I know it was pretty impromptu for you, but you look like you had a great time anyway. Do I have that right?"

Chiara took a moment to swallow before responding. "Pretty much. I always like spending time with you, and I didn't have any plans for today, so that seaside trip was a great way to kill a few owls - hours."

"Yeah, 'two birds with one stone,' as they say," Anon joked. "Oh, speaking of birds..." he added, on sighting the owl that had momentarily confused Chiara. The messenger dropped its payload in front of Anon, who deftly caught it with his free hand before opening it up to read. Not wanting to be too intrusive, Chiara settled for watching the wizard's reaction as she tore off another bite. As he perused the missive, his eyes suddenly went wide.

"Hm. Well, then," he uttered with a smirk, subtly turning the scroll away from Chiara, just in case.

"What is it, A-"

She was interrupted by a hearty cackle that caused Anon to double over and nearly drop what he was holding, before diminishing into a chuckle. "Is that so?" he quipped to himself once he had regained the ability to speak. Folding up the letter and placing it in his pocket, he addressed his now conspicuously curious companion: "Oh, don't worry. You'll see for yourself soon enough, anyway. Very soon, in fact."

Chiara hardly had time to ponder what that could mean, because Anon soon spotted a nearby stall, and offered to gift her some flowers. Reveling in being treated so attentively, she gladly followed him to the merchant, a jolly, portly fellow with a similarly thick mustache.

"Ah, what an adorable sight! How may I assist you today?" the vendor said in greeting.

"One bouquet of your finest tulips, please," Anon requested, money already in hand.

"Here you are, then," came the jovial reply. "Look how the young lady admires them!"

The cheerful florist took payment, Anon received his change, and Chiara accepted her present. The former then advised Anon: "It's plain to see how taken she is with you. Make sure to treat her right, you hear?" He playfully wagged his finger at him to emphasize his point.

"I guarantee you, sir, I make it a policy to reserve the best for my girlfriend," Anon answered with an exaggerated bow.

"There's a good lad. Goodbye, you two," the other man responded, seeing the duo off with a few waves of his hand. Chiara and Anon reciprocated the gesture as they walked away.

Merula! To her shame, Chiara had forgotten about her. How would she react were she to see the pair of them? Would she know who was impersonating her? She realized how long it had been since her last dose of Polyjuice, and she had no clue how well the transformation was holding. Despite the fact that she and Anon hadn't so much as shared a peck on the cheek - and did the things that they had said to one another even count as flirting? - her mind gave way to visions of her friends' wrath, and herself prostrated before them, begging for forgiveness. The constricting sensation only intensified. She had long since stopped paying attention to where Anon was taking her, until he announced:

"Well, here we are."

Startled, the fearful woman blinked several times as she took in her new surroundings. She was at Anon's apartment!

Making direct eye contact with Chiara, he led her inside, adding with a smug smile:

"By the way, Penny and Merula will be joining us this evening."


The storytelling is going to get a bit trickier for me from now on, on account of all the small components I'll need to weave in properly.
