/indie/ - Indie & furry Games General
>What the heck is this
/indie/ is the general for all indie games, such as Pragmata, Age of Decadence, A Hat in Time, Axiom Verge, Baba Is You, Battle Brothers, Card City Nights 2, Cave Story, Civilization, CrossCode, Cultist Simulator, Darkest Dungeon, Darkwood, DashBored, Dead Cells, The Desolate Hope, Disco Elysium, Environmental Station Alpha, FTL, Hollow Knight: Silksong, Knytt, LISA, Lobotomy Corp, Loop Hero, Machinarium, Middens, Monolith, Monster Train, Noita, OFF, OneShot, Rimworld, Rain World, Scav Prototype, Slay the Spire, Starsector, Subnautica, Sunless Skies, Underrail, VA-11 HALL-A, Yume Nikki, etc., as well as other games that just don't fit in any other general such as Atelier, Pillars of Eternity, Rayman, and Valkyria Chronicles. /jrpg/ is welcome. Idle, roguelite, shmup, 4x / RTS / city-builders, and RPGMaker games are cool too. This is a furry and lgbtqiapnabcxyz++ friendly thread.

Mobile or consoles, Flash or Unity, freeware or early access. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie and obscure games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.

>Can I talk about games that already have a general?
We mostly discuss games that are not popular enough for their own threads, however, all indie games are allowed. So talk about them if you want, but don't overdo it since you already have other generals for that.

>& furry Games General

I like anthos, and fuck, I could even contribute in this fashion as I have quite a few SFW anthro games, but this is bad bait that can ruin a general. Furries are hated by being crazed sex fiends and creepy overall, it's not the anthros themselves being the problem, but it's with people who enjoy them.

now I feel great shame for not being the one to make a new thread, I'll try and remember for next week

Tough question, I have a history of loving games that others find awful. Ask /civ4xg/.
If it helps, I genuinely like it. It feels like GTA when it comes to driving, and while it's mostly just Night City, you do have some long desert roads to drive on.
The main appeal, I'd say, are the different builds: the game is rigged that you cannot level up all the attributes, so it's usually only two of them.
My currently build is Cool/Reflex. Cool is for stealth, and Reflex is for blade/melee, so the core of my gameplay is to use quickhacks to ping enemies through walls, then assassinate them one after another. Reflex is for when I get spotted, with all the points I put in it, I can kill enemies when they're low on HP (around 50%), and I can deflect bullets so long as I have stamina.
Some other builds have you using sandevistan (slow-motion), abuse shotguns, pistols, or even smart guns that have autoaim.

I wasn't aware that Grime is souls shit and I am a bit let down. Also all that dialogue is just fucking forgive me zanzibarts or disney mascot scrunkos doing annoying noises. Would have prefered a silent mood.
Gameplay is both piss easy and also annoying because god forbid we have a good checkpoint system like Ori. Walk back the whole tunnel and think about how hardcore you are while wasting your time. And the viable counter spam of course is just eyerollingly easy.
I wish you had more of a moveset because it is extremely limited. There would be potential with all the weapons but because of the stat system and needing to invest shards+stone to upgrade weapons makes that just not viable.
Still very playable and enjoyable enough since I didn't play a metroidvania in a while but there is so much lost potential everywhere.

These story bosses are the only ones that unlock new skills and out of these 4 so far only 1 gave a notable new skill with a ranged drag. 2 of them were just basic game mechanics and the 3rd was a run.

One more complaint: The stat system is only half thought out.
Health increases health and force increases stamina which are both fine. Strength and Dex do nothing, literally nothing. You only need the 2 and Resonance to equip specific weapons but Resonance also scales counter damage and some other stuff. I just went that since I keep using the first weapon with no requirements.

I finished. It was really short, and had the same issue as Obduction. You need to teleport around a lot to solve puzzles, and there is a 10 second cutscene everytime you do so. And before that you're using an airship which takes even longer. So maybe of a third of your playtime is walking to and from, then waiting on teleporters.
Otherwise, cute lil game.

It's a huge change of pace - last two regions were about careful navigation and passive avoidance, this one has a lot less static traps, but a lot more mobile creatures so it's more about active evasion or direct combat
There is some new flora and fauna that evokes that cautious wonder very well as you gradually learn their behaviour. One of my favorites is probably how you can dig into trees and drink their sap.

There's way, way too much shit to go through, but I don't think you can finish it yet
At least one new region, and i suspect there's one more too
Complete trader rework, personal reputation, chatting, threatening, hugging, resting together, persistent inventories predisposition towards you (make a good first impression, don't show up covered in dirt and mumbling with a flashlight in your mouth) and all items they sell.
Complete bleeding rework, bandages no longer instantly heal bleeding and it depends on bandage quality now which adds a new layer to medical treatment and inventory management.
Batteries. Three different sizes, you can now swap them to use most electronics indefinitely as long as you have them. In turn, their usage time per single battery is lowered significantly. Stockpiling dozens of AAAs is very useful for the lategame.
Rebalance of pretty much everything. Non-container wearables now only lose integrity on direct damage. Most wearables had their values adjusted. Guns are much better now and penetrate through terrain, but ammo is harder to find. Rare medicines are now more effective, common medical items are less effective. It's more difficult to get fat by eating bad food. Encumbrance penalties now feel exponential instead of linear, meaning that running with a level 1-2 encumbrance moodlet is less difficult, but 3+ makes you practically immobile. Loot pool adjustments, rarer structures generate more and better loot, but cost to access them is increased.
Blueprint system that reveals recipe for a random item when used.
A lot of small things not really worth mentioning, but they make the game slightly better overall like the post-death statscreen, new shaders and UI sounds, animations, minor interactions, etcetc.

If there is a tool to make it easier that would be amazing

For moving furniture, where you grab it is important. Grabbing the edge makes it easier to flip, grabbing the center keeps it (mostly) stable. The physics are a little wonky, but you can definitely get used to them. Also, hold shift before grabbing to use extra force, pretty much necessary for moving heavy props.

I like mods for mods. When a mod gets big, people (and yourself) start to expect a certain level of design coherence. You can't really throw shit at the wall anymore, you have to refine what you've got. You got weird, but you have to stay there or else you'll break shit or turn people off. I don't know what it is but there is something intangible about furry art which just feels wrong. Even if they draw a wholesome human character you can still tell it was made by a furry, there is something unsettling about it. I wonder if this is what womeeen mean by "the ick". The flip side is that sometimes animal characters are clearly not furry, but it feel;s like that has become less common over time.

TLDR:
The association it has with the creepy sex fiends and other assorted degenerates.

Ranting:
If you're a furry you need to clarify you just think they're cute/neat or else people WILL think negative thoughts about you.

You look at furry and, out of instinct, think the artist is a degenerate, or a wacko, even if they just do SFW, and why would you not? Furries have not shown themselves to be principled, and example I'll think of is that zoophilic art is rampant and allowed on Furraffinity and furries at large do fuck all to stop it. Similar types of degenerate shit has been going on for OVER 15 YEARS. And then they have the gall to claim people hate target for base reasons while they form a persecution complex,

Take all this from someone who enjoys anthros and could be called a closeted furry, "furry" as a label is a warning sign for the hedonistic and corrupt. And until the day where someone decides to snuff out this nonese, it's a label they deserve.

Just let the thread die. Anyway I think you're wrong, it is an instinctive reaction for "base reasons". Even if there was no fetish associated with it all the appeal was around wholesome cute characters, people would still be weirded out and averse to them. It takes a specific kind of autism to fixate on non-human characters in that way, and its one which people subconsciously detect then identify as an out-group whenever it is expressed. It's not just a case of crossed wires in the brain redirecting attraction towards animals, it is the brain as a whole being more comfortable with things which are less human. The weaboos have a less severe strain, which causes fixation with unrealistic depictions of humans. There is a similar reputation for perversion, but they are more widely accepted because on average they are (on average) less weird (as evidenced (but not caused) by the fact they are still comfortable with the 'idea' of a person). The subject of the fixation itself is not the cause of their low social standing, it is a weirdness in the brain, behavior, and self expression.

NTA, but no, you're wrong. And since people don't seem to mind the bait, i'll reply.
Humans are known to be highly empathic by nature. We're evolutionarily designed to be able to form bonds with almost everything, we have domesticated hundreds of different species and, and it's completely not out of the norm for us to feel bad for a sick plant, or feel happy when the small lemon tree you're nurturing finally blossoms. Hell, people even personalize machines to the point where they think that modern cars are soulless and lack character - they want unexpected, but controlled feedback that's characteristic to the living being.
It's not because of the uncanny valley either, at large, either way. We care for the crippled and disfigured, and we understand limitations of others as society as a whole, even if you think otherwise - we don't throw babies with asperger's off cliffs. We, as a species, are naturally capable of liking anything that has traits of a living being.
An average, completely pure and unexposed person, would not find anthropomorphic characters repulsing. Hell, cartoons have been drawing them for over a century, and nobody ever revolted against them at large until very recently. It's purely based on association now, a lot of mentally unstable individuals become furries because they see them as a perfect catalyst for their escapism - a "better" form that magically fixes all problems in the world and makes life better, if only they could become one. I think you can see clear parallels with other escapist groups.
And just like other said groups, they're very aggressive at pushing their agenda around because they have deformed they brain to the point when they "don't feel safe" if some social space doesn't align with their idealized superidea, which naturally creates negative public reception.

The thing is, there is a difference between just anthropomorphic art and furry art, and from what I've seen/heard people can recognize that difference and identify one as 'weirder' than the other, even without knowing why. The association is important but it is not the only factor.

NTA. But that's an interesting point, because most people DO like replaying the same short game over and over again. That's what sports is, and card/board games, and all the big-budget multiplayer games The current "fad" is delivering the same kind of widely appealing experience but with RNG instead of a human opponent. Don't expect it to go away any time soon. I think we might be reaching a point of meta-appeal; each run within a game is minor variance on a familiar pattern, and each game within the genre is also just minor variance on a familiar pattern

The owe me an explanation because there are market standards and consumer expectations.
When you choose what car to buy and the dealership offers you one that costs 10% more than the other ones in the lot, then your first question is "what advantages will i get if i'll pay that extra?" (which is an especially sharp analogy in this specific case because stalker modding scene exists)
Sometimes it's philosophy or paradigm-based, like some people specifically charge more money for games in early access to ensure a more dedicated community that will be more fruitful to providing constructive feedback by filtering out people who are not that interested in the genre/this specific game. And that's honestly, more than enough for me.

"I am poor" doesn't reflect the quality of the work and doesn't actually say anything about it. If you justify your prices by saying that you really, really need the money right now - you're just pulling it out of your ass because it's impossible to judge objectively. Your "poor" differs from person to person.
If you would've said anything but that, something as simple as "i've spent a lot of money on proprietary assets so i have to make up for it" or "i want to increase the barrier of entry because the game is in-dev to support an ongoing effort" would completely suffice, and i have heard those justifications from other developers. Just the fact that you've made something doesn't make you special, there is a market of similar games - and i will naturally pivot to the highest cost:value title, unless you give me an actual, unique reason to stick to your game.

The game is 97% positive and I didn't see anyone on the front-page reviews mentioning this. One said they wanted a better testing ground to test gear but that's not the same thing. You're in the minority on this. Also, you couldn't make that criticism unless you'd actually played the game, which you didn't. You don't know how much is in a game unless you either play it or other people tell you, and "the game is light on content" just isn't the common sentiment in the reviews. You're just a little bitch crying because you got banned in a forum for crying about a price tag after getting an explanation you didn't agree with.

There are people who think likewise, and obviously they are going to be in the minority because people who agree with them are not going to buy the game to actually leave the review because it's a gated system. And other people that have talked about it off-steam have expressed similar concerns.

The average Joe Schmoe makes less of a big deal about prices than you do, and I was sometimes even selling them something as important as cell phones. Think about that. The average Joe has better self-control and certainty in their actions to not buy something they don't see the value in and don't feel the need to piss and moan and argue like you do. There is no justification for any price, you either pay it or you don't. There's no magic law or justification for why indie games are $20 and AAA games are $80. You just pay it or you don't and justify either way however you like. It's your right as a consumer to gauge what you're willing to buy and spend, and it's the right of the developer to charge what they want. It's all fake.
>Banning for piracy
This is the basic standard for literally any official channel of a game, I have never heard of any officially-hosted space for any game letting you brag about piracy. Are you delusional? Are you really going to tell me that there's no quality, value and content difference between games? If there's a difference between any of these metrics, then there's a justification for different prices. And in this particular case, competitors, stalker modding scene especially, COMPLETELY mogs the game by ALL those metrics. I would very gladly pay more for some of the free mods i've used to play over it. There is just no reason for me to buy it, and i come to the singular person who might convince me after all this, and all i hear are shitty excuses.
>I have never heard of any officially-hosted space for any game letting you brag about piracy.
I have. And i have participated in them. And i personally know developer who freely seed their own games for community engagement. Piracy is an inevitability. I can understand how you would want to remove people who are spreading the illegal copies, but if you're removing people for a singular mention/act of piracy - you just out yourself as a retard who doesn't understand how market works.

There are perceived pricing conventions for all major niches based on their scope, the development budget and state of completeness. Right now you're trying to make a point that a game, which is technically incomplete by all possible fucking metrics, and is treated by the developer as an incomplete product, is sold for an above average price for it's niche - a single-player stalker clone, feature completeness of which is directly dictated by how much content in the game there is, and how alive it is.
One-shot, low content/playtime indies are sold for ~$3-5 (i.e. Post Void). Medium scope, multifaceted, high-production value indies are sold for $10-15, (i.e. ballisticNG, fight knight). High value, polished and expansive games are sold for $15+, sometimes with a publisher cut.
You can always find outliers, but that's just a proof that some people simply don't understand how much their game is worth, and if you compare them by revenue to the dominant products - they're going to be in the minority
Free games are completely out of the scope of this conversation as they no longer adhere to the same market rules. Unless you're planning on alternative methods of monetization (i am not talking microtransactions) - then you are, by all means, no longer putting out a competitive product and will never earn money from it.
>and if you don't think it's worth it, you just don't buy it
And i don't, and my reasoning for why it's not worth it is in my previous posts

I honestly think the optional bosses are better than the story bosses because the devs tryhard way too hard to make them epic with gimmicks and way too loud chorus while smaller bosses are all fun gameplay mechanics and allowing you to learn some attacks without dying.
The 2nd phase of this guy had him set his sword on fire which made all attacks unblockable which is quite a thing to do in 'parryslop' for a mandatory boss but dodges still worked fine. Then the 3rd phase here is just running out time and not die to the bomb while the chorus is a overblowing kakophonie that made me roll my eyes back so hard they came out straight looking forward again.

In order of how Highly I'd recommend.
Donut County is calming and hilarious, with a 10/10 soundtrack
Pyre has a great cast of characters in a great story
Refunct is almost the shortest and certainly the sweetest game I've played, can't recommend it enough.
A Story About My Uncle fits what you are asking for too, it's captivating, I feel nostalgia for it despite replaying recently.
Star Fetchers is a little weird but very atmospheric, free demo on steam..
Environmental Station Alpha is a classic, requires a bit of thinking towards the end but thoroughly immersive.
The Floor is Jelly, has some relaxed platforming,
>>534364297
Tried it. Not any good, feels dumbed down and on rails, doesn't improve at all past the area covered in thee demo. Clustertruck is the much better game if you want a 3D platformer from landfall. Or, if you are a patrician with a need for speed, play Exo One. You will not regret it.

That's cool. Found one on Youtube which almost reaches Mach 4. Not far short of the 2000m/s+ speeds you can dive at in Exo One. Those are open levels stretching hundreds of kilometers though, going supersonic in a tight tunnel with everything blurring past in close proximity is nuts, any faster and I doubt you could really claim to be in control.

I'm at 26/47 characters to max rank in holocure, the first 2 lines are completed. Suisei was by far the hardest for me to max rank. You see, some characters are just great (Fauna), some are not very good (shion), some are very good in endurance but start off bad requiring some leveling luck to get past the first few minutes (bae) and then you have characters that are just ok. Suisei is one of them, what makes her so hard then? Her unadulterated attractiveness, her allure is causing me to fail repeatedly at the most basic task such as starting a stage and dodging enemies. That makes her one of the hardest character to play in my opinion. In other words, Suisei is pure Suisex. She makes me hard therefore she is hard.

Genre defining? Yes absolutely. But most of the 'revolutionary' games were during the Flash-game period which preceded the Indie scene getting momentum. No trying to start an argument here, just think that it's worth considering things before the current indie industry.
>several games mentioned are Existing Genre But Rouguelike
There were actually quite a Few flash proto-roguelikes (with less randomization between 'runs') probably more inspired by the arcade-cabinet format. I recall playing a pirate themed one similar to FTL. There a few permadeath party-based RPG ones which you'd recognize as Darkest Dungeon. There were plenty of 2D platformers so I'd bet at least one was a 'randomized castlevania' reminiscent of dead cells.
>RImworld and Prison Architect.
These are Dwarf Fortress.
>Kenshi and Battle Brothers
These kind of "command some dudes and pick your own goals in a simulated word" games were already around too. Albeit with much less depth than the current standard.
>Into the Breach
Not sure I'd even call the genre defining. If anything it's an outlier to the wider 'turn-based-grid-based-tactics' genre which goes way back, though again it was the first of it's type from an indie dev to get traction.
>>534447013
Noita obviously traces its lineage back to the powder-simulation games but I think it actually might be the first case of it being roguelike-ified. There have been a few liner side-scrollers and tower-defense types but I don't recall any with randomized level layouts.

>Noita obviously traces its lineage back to the powder-simulation games but I think it actually might be the first case of it being roguelike-ified.
one of the largest noita's innovations is it's inanely complex, turing-complete wand building systems that's new to the genre, because usually in those types of games the items are purely additive (like isaac) or way more limited (like any roguelite with an equipment system).
similar complexity has only been seen in puzzle-adjacent and engineering games before, not in an action platformer

Id say it was sadly predictable, would have preferred more of a twist given the whole vibe of the game, but I genuinely believe it isnt the final version of the ending and they made this one so they could release 1.0, hell the journal prompt is literally "The end?" Or something along those lines. Very suspicious, so its either dlc bait or there is a secret ending webhave yet to discover because I didnt see any mention of it online.

Also there are still a few areas left to expand into, ie Manufacting East, Engineering, Curie Wing

The game is obviously designed for the party to struggle a lot when the units have the minimum lvl for a certain difficulty and doesn't allow the player to circumvent this, with easy dungeons its not a big deal if everything gets fucked up, because you just lose lvl 0-1 shitters, but later, feels such a huge time sinker to progress I lose my will to play completely.

As someone who finished the game and enjoyed it, at that price its worth it, but from personal view the best aspects were the vibe, art style and original story, while the gameplay itself can feel repetitive after a while. So if you liked the alien vibe of Morrowind, youll like it, but dont expect gameplay as deep as morrowind as its mostly a very simple rpg with most secreta being "hidden" behind an arbitrary stat check.

I'm not sure how I feel about it not being scary anymore after a few days of getting used to it. But I suspect that's just because of the false sense of security I have right now. This might very well change, once the Ayys actually start knocking on my door.

The other allows me to slowfall by holding said pull in air.
A double jump I unlocked shortly before the boss.
I really hope they actually have more thought out upgrades, deeper combat, including airial combat, and a bit better direction pointers in the sequel. Also lots more and way earlier platforming like this because it's super fun to me.

I really liked this area. Maybe because it finally had some people actually talk to convey information instead of just hinting timewasting nonsense ala "OHHHHHH.... behold the pain of the olden ones....forgiven the sins of the Zuczuczibarth... in the sky..."
They called me "Endgiver" and constructed this entire area for me as play to feast on them after we dance, aka a boss battle with ballerina puppet as weapon. They came to this conclusion because they have vivid memories of their previous lives end where they were devoured by a big colourful spiral and my head is a black hole. All the other folks in the game also experience these echoed memories of a past life but are confused and going mad from them mostly.

Fucking hell, I got the notorious Ctrl + R doesn't drop items issue in VotV.
I fixed it by changing the duplicate keybind in the NVIDIA overlay. But after a few play sessions it broke again despite they keybind still being different in NVIDIA.
Guess I'll just switch to T for dropping items, since that seems to work, but it's a strange problem either way.

Nah, it's the one where pressing Alt + R (wrote Ctrl + R above by accident) does nothing as if the game isn't even registering the input.
A common cause for this is, that Alt + R is a keybind also used by the NVIDIA game overlay so it eats it up and doesn't pass it to the game. However after fixing that and the keybind working for a bit it suddenly stopped working again, even though nothing changed.

Shouldn't the criteria for list of "genre-defining revolutionary indie games" be more about being, well, genre-defining or revolutionary?
For example I like Hollow Knight a lot and it's certainly popular, but it's ultimately just doing what's been done before and doing it well, so I wouldn't consider it particularly genre-defining or revolutionary based on that.

The Long Dark is a meme, I am Canadian and it show that the game was made by some Vancouver native (vancouver is quite warm across the whole year, may only get a tiny bit of snow in winter) because the MC is struggling in very mild winter conditions. In fact I utterly hated it, also I dont recall nutritional value being a thing. Pretty sure its just a run of the mill hunger meter.
Vintage story sound like the game to have that level of autism, but I havent played enough to see if its the case.
Valheim isnt based on nutritional value, its just different foods that are an automatic buff when eaten aka you could survive off mead and carrots forever without any health issue.

>for the depth of mechanics within a zombie survival game
the amount of mechanics is huge, but they're all as deep as a puddle. yeah, sure, you can get depression, but the whole mood system is trivialized by taking a walk for 2 minutes. there are different locations for external injuries, but they're all treated in the same way and have negligible impact on gameplay unless you get hit real bad, and even then, the answer is to just switch banadages with clean ones and rest as much as possible. sure, you have different playstyles, but they're all mechanically shallow - the hunting is just setting up traps and waiting, the farming has no crop rotation and the enviroment has no variations so you can grow anything anywhere, the mechanical skills don't allow for customization which limits your interactions with cars to just scrapping and fixing them.
>I mean how many games you know that actually take nutritional value of food into consideration

I feel you. I usually try not to touch games until 1.0 either, but I feel like it's easy to make exceptions with sandbox games and games that feel as if they will take forever to be fully released.
For example I don't/didn't mind playing Satisfactory, Vintage Story or this in early access, because if a patch adds more content it often is stuff I wasn't able to reach with my level of progress anyways or it's a "self contained" bit of content, that due to the sandbox feature of the game I can just start exploring whenever I want, if that makes sense.
Of course that's all under the premise that the game has enough content to be fun. And also Vintage Story sometimes feels like an exception to the exception when a patch adds new worldgen and requires me to start anew save to see it all.
Another example would be Ultrakill, since it's a game where you're supposed to replay levels out of order all the time anyways, it's fine to play it in EA and just check out the new levels once they're added.
Contrast that to Gloomwood, which I played the very first version of and decided to wait until 1.0, because it's a story game that just feels incomplete to play until it's fully released.

This of course rub the naive polical partisans the wrong way, because how dare they not pretend the utopia that never came is but a revolution away? Even the commies get shat on, being depicted as ideological hasbeen arguing and criticizing others from their secret club basement, idolizing a Karl Marx oc donut steel who failed spetacularly at his attempt. On and on.

I mean its good ol Slav post-soviet cynicism, probably too raw for infantilized western audiences to digest without some form of kneejerk over percieved misrepresentation.

Yeah I can imagine that DE discussion attracts a lot of politically obsessed weirdos. But it is not the same situation because the game itself is not presented in a way which 'filters out' the normal people. It looks like an artsy-gritty detective game which could anyone could take interest in. Then see pic related for comparison. Games like that will filter out everyone who isn't into that kind of thing, so you can be confident it is meant to appeal to a specific kind of person. The same applies to furry games.
>the only reason why it's more widely accepted is
You have to understand that most people see furry stuff as 'just weird'. There is a bias against it. Even if there is nothing fetishized in the work itself, people will prefer other things.
>you're avoiding scav because you think it's gonna be some gay tranny shit
Not exactly, it's furshit, which I think everyone recognizes as a different thing. But they are both avoided for similar reasons. Discovering that mechanically it's a really fun game would not change the fact playing it means staring at furry character art for hours, which is an undesirable experience for most people. Interestingly this doesn't apply to seemingly non-furry animal designs like those in Tunic or Ori.

Without getting too political, diverse as a label tends to have a stigma attached to it, like how people see furries with the stigma they have as being crazed sex pests. But with things that are diverse, people associate it with DEI, SJW's, woke, etc, groups and concepts that tend to sacrifice good parts of the game by making it more diverse, aka, filling it with genuinely unpalatable political drivel.

We need a name for platformers with fluid movement where instead of having a few different discrete movement abilities player can use with consistent timings, character movement is instead directed by various states and doing same actions result in different moves.
To elaborate, imagine a traditional platformer like sonic: you have a singular "main" state and you plan your movement with an assumption that after doing something - you will return into that main state. i.e. i roll into a spring that launches me forwards and then do a ground-pound because i am no longer rolling to get to the ground quicker.
And now there are games like rain world where instead of plannig around using discrete moves, you instead plan around being in particular states. Instead of just "doing a slide" you go into a sliding state and then decide what next state you would want to be in: going into a pounce, a pipe slide, a whiplash or just resuming a crawl - each one of those also having multiple "exit" options.
Here's an example of a demo that has a similar system with pretty fun movement.

I know what you mean, 3D platformers where it's more then just precision using a few select moves, things like air control, double jumps, movement boost using items like the gun in your webm. Games where you're meant to savour the movement instead of frustratingly throwing shit at the wall doing time trails or insane collectables.

Like fuck, the last two platformers I played but way to much emphasis on collectables and time trials and not enjoying the movement, real frustrating.

Super Mario Sunshine feels where the movement was meant to be savoured though I do remember I good bit of BS from it back in the day too, fuck that giant flying sand bird holy shit. And my memory could be hazy too.

The game is pretty accessible and easy to get into so I don't think there's really much advice needed. Though a recommendation is trying to get a grip on the parry mechanic as soon as possible, since that makes the game MUCH more comfortable to play (and has a few game mechanics/bonuses tied to it): I didn't bother with it at first and just used dodge, like in every other [metroidvania] for the first ~10 hours, until I ran into a boss that was basically unbeatable. I went back to early areas, got a grip on the parry mechanic and tried the boss again: With parries he was a cake walk.
Oh, and there secret walls that you'll have to hit, iirc. Took me a while to figure out.

Got something going which, if you squint really fucking hard and have an iq below 82, looks like a bus.

Behold, nigger science.
Man I was sat there like an idiot for ages trying to remember ratios and plan how to lay it all out, and then I forgot to actually leave room for and belt in the steel and copper plates at the end of it all.

Is Factorio actually good? I've heard some polarizing opinions on it here but that could just be contrarians

I tried it. Got filtered very hard by it, and ended up disliking it because it caused a blooming friendship to crash and burn.
I still have fun blowing bug nests up, but the whole spaghetti thing just filters me mercilessly. With friend, I managed to pass oil, but solo, oil is always where my games end.

I've seen so many screenshots and even watched streams of voices of the void but never seen an alien. Does this shit have aliens or is this just some inside joke where everyone pretends?

Depends on you as a person I guess. Some like, some hate. The easiest way to learn the game, imo anyway, is to look at efficient blueprints that other people have made for a thing (oil, blue science, whatever) and then ponder the orb for as long as you need and try to understand *why* that blueprint is good, how many of each machine and belt you need and so on.
If logistics make you struggle, spread things out so much that you have so much room to play around with that the spaghetti aspect doesn't even matter. Solving the Gordian knot of my belts is what I like though, so I intentionally build fairly cramped.

I think I'd die, longest I ever went was 9 hours during a extreme grinding session I wanted done on my off day and by the end I felt delirious

It's more addictive than crack if you have any kind of STEM background, analytical mind or engineer's mindset.

Undisputed king and creator of its genre. One of the best optimized game engines ever made.

5 /10 its okay.

i always hear about oil filtering people but i physically dont know how. is it the pipes going around? is it having to click on the building and select another type? does 1 output clog and they throw their hands up and explode?

No, it's more like, the refinery.
Oil goes in, and you have THREE different kind of liquids coming out of the other side, with one that can work as fuel, and one that can be refined into plastics.
PLASTICS. PLURAL.
