Now that I've played both I think the PSX ver of SMT1 is better than SNES for sure. The battle UI is much better, the turning animations in dungeons is way better, and I'm pretty sure a lot of the QoL stuff in it wasn't in the original. Only thing that feels like a downgrade to me is some of the background art which is blurry 3D prerenders instead of crisp pixel art, and the translation autism but that's not the game's fault.

I'm surprised there doesn't seem to be any attempt to improve the combat system though, status effects are still absurdly powerful. Also too bad fusion is still so limited and they didn't add skill inheritance or anything.

I wonder about SMT2 though, it already had some UI/QoL improvements over 1 so it might not be worth the worse background art.

When you’re back tracking and having to grind or go through dark zones it feels forever when you’re trying to turn. Its been a LONG time since I last REALLY played IV. Like, I'm talking since before vanilla V released easy. I'm genuinely interested how I'd feel about it at this point with an actual full re-playthrough because my general opinion on the story has definitely degraded over time due to its overly derivative nature. I did start it up and test it out for a couple hours back when it got the surprise citra update that fixed the black box death animation issue. Just gonna continue from that file since I barely played it that time, was only level 5 and didn't even get out of naruku. Looks like I was going magic but I MIGHT course correct into dex, might be fun to do gun instead of the expected magic run.

I honestly do not know. I've done melee weapons and ranged weapons focused runs before. I mostly focused on guns on those runs with luck due to how aliments work with smirk. I might put most points into STR. Or I might have fun with guns. Not sure as of yet.

Follow the alignment guide if you want neutral. Your basic melee weapon is mostly useless unless dumping into STR, DEX is better for skills. Guns are very good for free aliment casting, Asmodus can be instakilled by hama. Shinno Rounds are the best rounds for the neutral route along with the Skull Rounds. The best weapons you can get can hit multiple random targets, mainly since they are better optimized for boss battles and chaining aliments/crits.

In terms of melee weapons, one of the best ones to get near the start of the game is the bone sword for the extra 2 hits. I'll list the best weapons to get across the game and mention the different weapon types.

Swords: Well balanced with everything and offers good range for overworld enemies.
>Bone Sword. Extremely easy to fulfill the requirements and it's a straight upgrade
>Chainsaw. If you have a high luck/agility build, you can get it's effect much more often. It's a very high risk high reward type of weapon
>Usumidori. Multihits are frankly just better than most other weapons.

Daggers: Always will have a chance to hit multiple times, but has the least amount of range. Prepare to be jumped often.
>Pixie Knife. Pretty strong with the poison effect.
>Sleep Harpe. Multihit weapons and sleep is strange, if the first hit makes them fall asleep the second will wake them up, but waking them up also gives a free smirk. Allows an extra layer of buffer.
>Headhunter . With a high luck/agility build, you can rip and tear through bosses and normal enemies with this easily.

Blunt: Much slower where there is a delay with triggering it in the overworld, but always strong in battle. It's much worse than the instakill weapons for sword/dagger. The only one worth getting is Skull Scepter since it's a strong multihit.

Spears: Offers the most range and the best anti-boss combat ability with built in multihit potential. This leads more of a delay after attacking, which means you can be attacked by the sides if you miss an attack.
>Cursed Lance. Right at the start of the game. Legit the strongest intro weapon in the game.
>Hawthorn Spear. Can be gotten for free and can give sleep, which can be abused.
>Brionac. Always at least 2 hits.
>Dragonfly Slicer. It's Brionac but stronger.

With guns, the best options are the Ace Bazooka, Mikado Custom, and the Gold/Love/Light guns.

Best accessories are the Shot/Power Earrings.

Finished IV at last, NGL despite some boring parts here and there, the overall game is kino AF and I was not expecting to get neutral on first run (checked the guide afterwards and found that it has a strict -8 to +8 requirement)

Pretty solid progress for today, got to just before medusas room. Successfully shifted my build from magic to dx, the various physical death animations in this game are all super satisfying. I had completely forgotten about the awkward press up or down on the d-pad to shift your view so you can jump or climb something gimmick. Its very unnatural.

Tokyo Millennium has a great aesthetic, I like how the first Kalpa of the labyrinth of Amala is a sort of ironic mimicry of it and as the labyrinth slowly decays into chaotic entropy it makes it feel like the shift from the lawful orderly society of SMT 2 to the vortex world of 3 represents a natural decay in a cycle from law to chaos (purely thematically)

I would love to see how it would appear in a remake, as awful as that might sound to some people, I really would like to see Tokyo Millennium outside of the 2d/ps1 context. We are likely never going to get scans of that manga as well
