Now that I've played both I think the PSX ver of SMT1 is better than SNES for sure. The battle UI is much better, the turning animations in dungeons is way better, and I'm pretty sure a lot of the QoL stuff in it wasn't in the original. Only thing that feels like a downgrade to me is some of the background art which is blurry 3D prerenders instead of crisp pixel art, and the translation autism but that's not the game's fault.

I'm surprised there doesn't seem to be any attempt to improve the combat system though, status effects are still absurdly powerful. Also too bad fusion is still so limited and they didn't add skill inheritance or anything.

I wonder about SMT2 though, it already had some UI/QoL improvements over 1 so it might not be worth the worse background art.

Its been a LONG time since I last REALLY played IV. Like, I'm talking since before vanilla V released easy. I'm genuinely interested how I'd feel about it at this point with an actual full re-playthrough because my general opinion on the story has definitely degraded over time due to its overly derivative nature. I did start it up and test it out for a couple hours back when it got the surprise citra update that fixed the black box death animation issue. Just gonna continue from that file since I barely played it that time, was only level 5 and didn't even get out of naruku. I honestly do not know. I've done melee weapons and ranged weapons focused runs before. I mostly focused on guns on those runs with luck due to how aliments work with smirk. I might put most points into STR. Or I might have fun with guns. Not sure as of yet.

Follow the alignment guide if you want neutral. Your basic melee weapon is mostly useless unless dumping into STR, DEX is better for skills. Guns are very good for free aliment casting, Asmodus can be instakilled by hama. Shinno Rounds are the best rounds for the neutral route along with the Skull Rounds. The best weapons you can get can hit multiple random targets, mainly since they are better optimized for boss battles and chaining aliments/crits.

In terms of melee weapons, one of the best ones to get near the start of the game is the bone sword for the extra 2 hits. I'll list the best weapons to get across the game and mention the different weapon types.

Swords: Well balanced with everything and offers good range for overworld enemies.
>Bone Sword. Extremely easy to fulfill the requirements and it's a straight upgrade
>Chainsaw. If you have a high luck/agility build, you can get it's effect much more often. It's a very high risk high reward type of weapon
>Usumidori. Multihits are frankly just better than most other weapons.

Daggers: Always will have a chance to hit multiple times, but has the least amount of range. Prepare to be jumped often.
>Pixie Knife. Pretty strong with the poison effect.
>Sleep Harpe. Multihit weapons and sleep is strange, if the first hit makes them fall asleep the second will wake them up, but waking them up also gives a free smirk. Allows an extra layer of buffer.
>Headhunter . With a high luck/agility build, you can rip and tear through bosses and normal enemies with this easily.

Blunt: Much slower where there is a delay with triggering it in the overworld, but always strong in battle. It's much worse than the instakill weapons for sword/dagger. The only one worth getting is Skull Scepter since it's a strong multihit.

Spears: Offers the most range and the best anti-boss combat ability with built in multihit potential. This leads more of a delay after attacking, which means you can be attacked by the sides if you miss an attack.
>Cursed Lance. Right at the start of the game. Legit the strongest intro weapon in the game.
>Hawthorn Spear. Can be gotten for free and can give sleep, which can be abused.
>Brionac. Always at least 2 hits.
>Dragonfly Slicer. It's Brionac but stronger.

With guns, the best options are the Ace Bazooka, Mikado Custom, and the Gold/Love/Light guns.

Best accessories are the Shot/Power Earrings.

Finished IV at last, NGL despite some boring parts here and there, the overall game is kino AF and I was not expecting to get neutral on first run (checked the guide afterwards and found that it has a strict -8 to +8 requirement)

Pretty solid progress for today, got to just before medusas room. Successfully shifted my build from magic to dx, the various physical death animations in this game are all super satisfying. Tokyo Millennium has a great aesthetic, I like how the first Kalpa of the labyrinth of Amala is a sort of ironic mimicry of it and as the labyrinth slowly decays into chaotic entropy it makes it feel like the shift from the lawful orderly society of SMT 2 to the vortex world of 3 represents a natural decay in a cycle from law to chaos (purely thematically)

I really love the dungeon crawling aspect of SMT, the isometric kind to be specific more so than the combat. I actually think MTII has the best dungeon design in the series, with SJ being a close second (artificially difficult teleport dungeons bring it down). Games that had bad dungeon designs are games like 1 (Destiny land is kind of fun at least despite being so short) and 2 unironically with If... being even worse. To me I'm not big on being strategic or worrying about minmaxing. I like to see what enemies are weak to, what spells they use so I can block it, bring those attacks and resistances to the table and then just throw attacks around back and forth without having to think. It's brain dead but I prefer combat like this and saving my actual problem solving for navigating from one spot to the other. So the fact that IV had mediocre dungeon design and something as obnoxious as smirk and forced companions throwing out attacks without your say in it really brought the game down for me. IVA didn't make it much better.
Other than dungeons, I like the stories and mythology. SMTV feels like the first game in a while that lets you dig into the characters. And there is just enough world building to make it even more interesting. SJ is the game that comes to my mind next as being close. All your shipmates of different backgrounds and lives made you really grow close to all of them and they had great side dialog. V also has this element of the characters feeling alive with Dazai and his divorces parents, etc. The MC and Aogami have a great contrasting relationship that is also a metaphor for law and chaos which I think is really cool, especially because it fits Susano-o's duality perfectly. I like that Aogami leans on law while being a robot and the MC leans on chaos while being human.

It would be an ok dungeon if not for the luck checks, I failed a luck check that turned me into a frog and had to backtrack with 30 Luck FFS.
But yeah, the last dungeons were just painful to navigate and full of nothing so there's even less of an incentive to explore them.

It was funny to see that even in this state, random encounters still struggle to kill you.

It's not you, the skill itself is surprisingly rare and at this point of the game, demons are already nothing more than (de)buff bots and meatshields so you have little incentive to fuse.
Even assuming that you did fuse the demon with the skill, you would still need luck to avoid him getting bound himself.

This discussion really makes me wonder if VV will even be considered a good game in the next decade. It might legitimately suffer the same fate as Bioshock Infinite or Sonic Colors where it was heavily praised at launch, but slowly disliked throughout the years by fans and casual gamers for being underwhelming or heavily affecting the franchise for the worse.

Minotaur was easy. Medusa is kicking my ass due to her gun skills, which means I need to rebuild my party.

Blunt weapons are fucking ass. Forcing myself to use them has shown how truly awful they are. I defeated WoKong for the best blunt weapon at this moment, and it does around 75-80 damage with a 45% chance to miss. The bone sword can do up to 150+ with less than 20% chance to miss.

Demon fusion in battle is mostly shit, the only use case is to fuse a new demon for refilled MP and to summon it into the party instantly, it keeps any aliments the fusion materials have had. I have spent the last 2-3 hours trying to get a fusion accident. 20+ in battle fusions, 10+ slimes recruited, not a single fusion accident.

I'm purposefully making my playthrough slower to experiment and to enjoy the game more.

A miracle happened, I FUCKING APPLIED AN AILMENT ON A BOSS! My equipment was given the upgrade of a lifetime over in Shinjuku, Bazooka + sick rounds actually made her sick even if it took 191 luck. Also I am noticing not only are ailments being more real but crits too, feels really common I get crit/Smirk, it's making me tempted to actually put points into Dex to put damage behind it but I don't know if it compares your luck to the demon's luck for ailments/crits or not (will my 200 luck go as hard as it does now or taper off without further investment because I don't maintain the ratio?).
