Weird, it has been completely opposite experience for me.
Did whole week of grinding hc dungs and saw fuck all str plate pieces, just constant stream of leather and mail. From every single boss. So many leather/mail pieces that, in fact, even classes that use them roll greed, because they (and all their alts) are fully decked in 463 already.
Meanwhile plate pieces are always contested and i've only seen 463 str trinked drop once (1) in the whole week of grinding.
458 JP pieces suck ass, 463 hc trinkets are unobtainium, vendors are located in a completely retarded spots, even prof trainers are scattered around...
can't even farm faction rep in dungeons anymore and dailies are fucking terrible

Turns out people don't really want a permanent rotation of nochanges servers, especially when all of that effort just becomes void when they move on to another expansion. I get that it's too much effort to maintain 6 different forms of classic era servers but they would've made a lot of money from people copying over characters, even if they never played them.
Hopefully they get it right with TBC and make a TBC era server, same for Wrath. But at this point, I think everyone just wants Classic+.

I don't think permanent era servers of expansions past vanilla would be as popular as people think they would be. Most of the people playing beyond vanilla are raidloggers, they want progression. A static server would stagnate very quickly. The only reason vanilla kind of gets away with it is because people come for the leveling experience, and even then it's still got a pretty small playerbase.

Classic+ is definitely the way to go, but I wonder if they haven't missed the window of opportunity for that. I also don't think the devs really understand what made vanilla what it was and won't be able to recreate it. At this point, they should probably just retire classic altogether after reaching a certain milestone - let's say Legion - and then bring it back in 10 or 15 years when there's some nostalgia again. People are burnt out on vanilla, and every fresh release is going to have diminishing returns. The progression servers are losing steam. Let it go under for awhile, let people get hungry for it again, then bring it back out. They've got to realize they might not be able to hold people indefinitely, but there will always be people waiting to come back. People waited 15 years to play vanilla again, they will do it again, but you have to make them want it.

It was a bad idea in the first place and adding slop like chronoboon and layering to enable parsies made it worse.
MMOs always die without regular updates and timegated progression doesn't count as an update. The only right thing to do was making a new game with a similar philosophy to vanilla and that isn't happening.

You do not lose in vanilla because of stun resist, you lose because you are bad and a ret paladin, a druid or a skilled rogue. Racials in vanilla are perfect, they are all situational against certain classes meanwhile in retail classic like WOTLK and mop some racials are just better in every single way.

meh. only 50k less than the first week of Cata, and about the same as the first raiding week of TBC. it will likely see a rise in the coming weeks like previous expansions did as more people get to 90 and gets alts to 90. it probably won't have as strong a middle as TBC did, but I bet the dropoff will be less harsh than Cata's was. it's obviously not at its heyday anymore, but it's not *that* bad. at least, we can't make that call until we see the next few weeks of data. all of these expansions peak around 3-4 weeks in.

the real outlier here is Wrath, but it was hugely inflated by gdkps and being incredibly alt friendly. the drop off after first phase of Cata was pretty bad too. but I think MoP will be a little more stable because ToT is what people want to see.

So apparently the reason it is this way is because it's "balanced around 3s", IE when you have 2 DPS 1 Healer you can easily win by simply rotating the DPSs CCs on the healer and killing someone because nobody dies or takes damage when he is present with this resilience, however in BGs you quickly end up 2-4 healers in one place resulting in nobody ever taking a single point of damage.

It's just a fact people actually enjoy it, people would call me crazy for grinding furbolgs for the epic trinket on each of my characters, but it's like 3 days of Furbolg poaching and then they sit in AVs killing vandrar or feel for literally months.

The longer I play WoW, the more I realize Classic players need some form of autistic grind to stay engaged.
In vanilla, it was leveling once and then consumable grinding. With anni, the R14 grind was added in and people kind of hated it.
In TBC, it's reputation grinding then doing the profession grind before finally settling on consumable grinding.
Wrath has none of that.
I guess the game needs to hit a nice balance of grindy but not too grindy and fun. That replay value needs to be there. Look at MoP dailies right now, they're hated universally because they're just bad quests. Look at Legion world quests, the #1 complaint wasn't that they were boring quests but rather player power was tied to logging in every day and this went on for an entire expansion.
Maybe people are okay with "fun grinds" as long as they only have to do them once, emphasis on the fun.

removing talents. this was one of the worst game decisions by blizzard of all time. it's was a serious fuck you to anyone who has ever enjoyed leveling a character in an RPG.

I agree it sucks for leveling and is probably a detriment to attracting new players. But I've honestly grown to like it at endgame. My spec has like 6 different combinations of talents or more that are all viable and actually meaningfully change my playstyle. It's been fun messing around with them.

if you have absorbs and your other raid healers were not absorb healers, then your absorbs get eaten first

if your absorb output is sufficient, you will absorb so much damage that only spot healing/aoe healing is needed from other healers, which will make their healing numbers seem low

disc causes the same situation, a good disc can eat all the healers lunch by pre-shielding big mechanics and absolutely dumpster the healing meter, because non-absorb healers have no opportunity to utilize their throughput, and just wind up overhealing if they try to roll HoT's

oh yeah pally illuminated healing causes a bubble and they can just spam overhealing to keep their bubbles rolling

According to Ironforge.pro the only era servers with more than 1000 active characters are are Whitemane for US players and Firemaw for EU.
There are thirteen more servers with between 100 and 751 players and sixteen servers with between 4 and 100 active characters.

the dailies also aren't nearly as important as people talked them up to be, which thankfully people are pointing out in the comments. you only need honored in a couple factions to get a few valor pieces, which you can get just by doing regular zone quests. there's no need to get full sets of valor gear when it's just gonna be replaced by raid gear, on top of celestial dungeons coming out soon.

MoP first tier is weird because MSV gear is lower ilvl than the other raids, nobody would bother with it if they released HoF and Terrace right away. Celestials I feel are more of an alt catch up mechanic than for people who don't want to raid entirely, and probably delayed for similar reasons, it would give people access to HoF and Terrace gear before those raids drop, albeit lower ilvl, but still.

Probably gonna be alliance cause I have a warlock about to hit max level that I can funnel gold from. The first time I leveled a warrior I didn’t afford my mount until level 46. I WILL NOT invite paladins btw, to secure dungeon blues and upgrades for myself of course.

I plan to play prot and fury in tbc cause warrior endgame is a bit boring to me in vanilla. I really enjoyed playing bear Druid in the first tbc classic in heroics, but now with the introduction of dual spec in tbc I think I can tank dungeons to gear myself and enjoy the gameplay. Then either use the badges or dungeon gear to raid in karazhan and work my way up. If I wait until TBC classic then I’ll be leveling a bit faster along the fresh Draenei toons. But I’m not sure what race to go yet. Is the +5 sword and mace skill worth it to go human while leveling or does it make a very negligible difference?

Or should I just go give project epoch a shot?

WoW is probably not the game if you're looking for a good story. vanilla barely has a story and has more of a focus on worldbuilding with lots of little narratives, and it does a decent job at that, but yeah. later expansions have more focus on story but it's not really anything to write home about.
other than that...depends what you're looking for. keep in mind there's two main versions of classic right now, vanilla and MoP. vanilla has a pretty good leveling experience, I think it's worth experiencing. again, it is more about worldbuilding than a narrative experience. but it can be pretty immersive. if you're looking for endgame content, both versions are decent. MoP has more complex mechanics, vanilla is more about preparation and investment. both are pretty minmaxed because people have been playing forever so you will have a learning curve, but it's not that bad.

I realize that's probably a lot and might put you off, but the fact is WoW was a lot of people's first MMO, so yeah, it's fine. I would start with vanilla and just leveling and see if you're into that, and then you can branch out from there
