Nah, it was trash when most of it was abusing animation delays instead of avoiding lasers and AoEs. Especially that later they just made AoEs so big you had to facetank them anyway which is bad game design. Later on they introduced dolls which buffed movement speed for echelon, but why would you need that when shit was nuking your whole grid anyway? Gameplay-wise the only good thing GF1 had was strategizing movement on overmap. It was actually really good. Microing and dolls' classes/stats were simply wasted because of bad enemy designs. In the end everything devolved into stackng DPS while stalling enemies by abusing animation delays so you had bigger DPS window to kill everything before it gets the chance to shoot at you. SMGs and HGs were valued mainly for their buffs or extreme gimmicks that allowed avoiding micromanaging in lazy way, like immortal G36C combo. Shotguns too were used only either for buff tiles or when you could stack so much damage reduction you dodn't have to micro anymore, nothing inbetween. Hype those few SMGs and SGs got for their invincibility is best proof that microing in the state it was in GF1 was just tolerated evil.
Instead of AoEs bigger than grid they should make them 1-tile splash or 3x3 max so you could move your doll to corner and save the rest of team. Slap interesting mechanics like M16 one where effects of boss skill depended on which doll stepped on flare and you'd actually have meaningful micro content instead of this shit.
GF2 would be great if everything wasn't solved by fucking Klukai. This drill for example was joke because it was just using Kluk's S2 every turn. Even invincibility didn't help because of retarded ripple damage killing enemies even if they tanked initial hit. If they actually thought, instead of giving 1-time damage immunity they'd give enemies like 4 stacks of shelter for 80% AoE reduction and force you to actually make canyon defense challenge with single target. MICA starts good and fumbles

Nah, GF2 is still fundamentally gimped by poor enemy AI and design, which is exacerbated by mechanics such as no hit chance or high ground cover ignore, because in general the player is able to exploit the terrain much better than the enemy could, leading them into easy killzones or alphastrikes.
This invariably led to the DPS powercreep arms race between enemies and player units, where difficulty was forced by making enemies more tanky, which broke when they decided to give 416 a ridiculous kit in order to milk her. Even now, the only way they can force difficulty in modes like hero difficulty or 40/40 PVA/ED is by gimping the player and inflating the enemy.

Enemy AI is dumb in almost every game. That's why I'm always in favor of hordeslaying gameplay where fun and challenge comes not from avoiding some OHKO nukes, beating damage sponges etc, but from not getting overwhelmed by mobs. Fire Emblem AI is also dumb but because of much bigger amount of enemies you don't feel like it matters that much. If you don't have something that can enemy-phase everything, you actually move in a way that lets you take what you can while still moving forward.

Anon, that's the whole point of using terrain: to gain advantage. If anything, this is the the least thing you should complain about.
Tanks being unable to perform their role is much bigger offender when it comes to early design. But yeah, I think that having accuracy could make gameplay better and would make more strats/doll designs/builds viable. Obviously sweaty ones would complain and reset for chances, but it'd be fine if you could improve your chances by actually using strats to reposition into better tiles. It also incentivies you to move forward. Just like tighter turn limits would incentivize people to move and make challenges other than DPS check. They already have evacuation/escort goals, they just don't utilize them well enough.
Fixing it would be easier if they just nerfed Kluk, but since they won't, it will require establishing new base at around at least v3 Kluk and more effort in map and enemy placement designs.

That's a good thing. AoE helps but doesn't trivialize it completely. Weakening with AoE and finishing off with single target would be kino.

There is. By not taking them all at once. By utilizing terrain to make it harder for them to get closer to you. By retreating so only few would be able to reach. But yeah, I already complained by tanks being useless due to fact that almost all defense comes from cover and stability, making actual defense not play any role at all. That is one of the few really bad things about initial design which has nothing to do with powercreep killing it because it was already dead.

Or just better movement/placement. Best games allow you to utilize different starts. You could use less mobile but stronger units to get there later and kill boss easily, or use movile units to get there fast and have more time to kill boss. Buffers, debuffers. It's just that they don't utilize those mechanics and don't design around them, especially that Kluk makes it harder.

Thankfully keys system allows you to buff characters. Just release more core keys with stronger effects to bring them up to that level. Just compare QJ pre and post mod.

Game could run fine with Suomi, especially that Suomi provided only survivability with some freeze damage boost on cooldown. It wouldn't be first gacha where some characters are left in the dust. It doesn't necessarily mean stalling development and whole rebuilt if they simply did the math and start releasing new dolls, sets and keys up to new established standard. Gachas which survive initial cutthroat competition can often stay for years. Just look at GF1, GBF, FEH, AK, genchink etc. Since they are building on top of GF1, they can potentially go through fucktons of dolls. Compared to GF1 roster GF2 is still small so they have potential to fix this shit sooner and have less extra MOD keys to release then later with more work.
Like give SPAS set or key that reduces stability loss scaling with her Def and suddenly you have tank who can tank hordes of mobs until elite enemy or debuffer appears.

I bought monghtly gems one in GF1 and am willing to spend on monthlies + voyage in GF2 because they fixed GF1 and provided me with good story. I don't expect them to make it as well as I imagine, but making it less of a mess than it is now and establishing some standard with slow powercreep good enough for a gacha assuming story will also be good.

Pretty much. Lusica is powerful enough to fight through AU defences by herself AND activate the relic, which is a fail state for humanity as a whole. There is no way to stop William turning Lige into Lusica because Jefuty cannot get to him; the only way is to get Lusica/Lige's body away from him before he can start his experiments.

It's possible that Lunasia might have been able to activate the Antarctic Relic but the AU is an outside context problem for the URNC in general.

The Antarctic Relic is a city-sized one, I assume it's something like the "main control node" equivalent while other Relics are just substations.
