So first off, not a shitpost, just an observation of reality. Everything about FNC was a blight on Final Fantasy. Nomura failed to release Versus XIII, which resulted in the catastrophic creation of Barry and led to the massively disappointing release of XV which alienated all FF oldfags because it was a piece of shit and also was not Versus XIII. In the interim, we were unfortunately subjected to a low effort, low quality Final Fantasy XIII, Lightning wank trilogy, just because they had nothing else going on and wanted to reuse assets for a quick cash grab to continue funding XV. The best thing to come out of FNC was Type-0, which didn't get an English release until it was a PS4 game that came with the XV demo.

Second, I have no idea what sort of "gotcha" you think this is. XIV 1.0 was a failed game, yes. No one disagrees with you. However, it was also a nothing burger. No one cared except for the people who were playing it, which was not very many people to begin with. For non-MMO Final Fantasy fans such as myself, when I heard it sucked, I was like "oh... well I was never going to play it anyway so who cares". It was such a nothing burger in fact that I didn't even know XIV 2.0 and ARR happened until the free trial meme started going around. Even if whatever "gotcha" you're trying to pull is related to your bogeyman, Yoshida had nothing to do with 1.0, so I have no idea where your shitpost is going.

I really wish FF16 had been turn based with a full party. You could have had the other dominants be party members and Clive could use their special skills/summons, or still have them be enemies but get their powers as rewards. I maybe spoiled by Expedition 33, but I'd have loved to have played the story but with that gameplay. Especially if I could have that movement, walking around the base was way too slow.

Honestly true, but it should've just been iterative of FFVIIR ATB with some DMC flare. Not turn based. Yoshida and co are not capable of designing that system IMO, but I think that team could have/should have iterated on FFVIIR instead of attempting and failing to design yet another new FF system. XVI would have been just fine as a VIIR-like action RPG that has it's own flavor and style.

I remember I stopped playing when a massive laundry list of green checkmark chores were dumped on me before the final mission. I bought it on launch on PS5, and I played it a lot for awhile. But when I got near to the ending, I literally tapped out. I pushed the game from my mind for at least a solid 4-5 months and didn't come back to finish the game until the middle of December. It was basically torture. Not many video games have ever pushed me to the breaking point the way those spammed MMO side quests did.

Yeah, that's some very poor game design to me.
That checkmark basically screams to the player for hours of gameplay "this is another useless time wasting walky talky section with maybe a boss encounter but no meaningful reward".
So whenever some of the quests are actually character focused and somewhat memorable with good dialogue and scene direction, there is basically nothing to differentiate them to the player to make them want to do it.

Take a look at Rebirth in comparison.
Every single "check mark" side quest in the game whether it's a bulletin board job or otherwise, is actually a character focused side quest.
A great reward often awaits you after your expedition across the landscape, and there are usually unique game mechanics specifically for that quest.
There are even unique mini games for character side quests, like taking pictures, picking mushrooms, or Chocobo Gliding.
One quest will be focused entirely around Aerith where you pick flowers like old times or make mushroom stew, and increase your bond.
One with Tifa where you hunt down fresh meat to feed the Condor or transform into a frog to play American Gladiator and increase your bond.
One will be focused on Barret where you craft him a new gun, one on Yuffie where you hunt down the Tonberry King.... Etc, etc.
Every single area of the game you have new set of unique character focused side quests that build on top of each other as you progress and the relationships grow further.
And the game tells you what quests are for who, and there's always one available to do next. You know, like an RPG....

The only thing that differentiated the character side quests in XVI seems to be if the mission popped up on Clive's desk or not
But that's a 50/50 crap chute, because some of those quests are just as tedious and meandering as any other is.

Rebirth had me all checklisted out pretty quick

Rebirth's checklist of smaller side activities dotting the world is almost entirely optional though. I think there's too much of it, but it's literally optional. The only thing compelling anyone to do it all would be autism. You don't miss out really on anything of importance if you don't do them, but you get good bonus rewards/gil/XP in each area if you do the activities and fight the secret boss. You will become significantly stronger as well based on the bonus XP gain and Materia growth that you'll be getting along the way. It's fluff sure, at best it's some variety to break up the pace of exploration while you traverse the landscape, and at worse it's a completely harmless icon that you can literally just walk right past.

In XVI, the main story literally forces you to do long sections of tedious side quests packed with meandering dialogue around the Hideout to significantly pad the run time in the lowlight sections before it returns to the main story dungeon sections. The pace grinds to a halt and you go do MMO sidequests for Mid for hours at a time. This happens more than once

FFII Dawn of Souls/Soul of Rebirth is Kino.

The tedium and literal empty nontent of experiencing XVI will keep me from perhaps ever returning to it. It's not that the game is empty "looking" or doesn't have "Ubisoft" copy paste side activities
There's just nothing here, period. No worthwhile side rewards to sniff out. No party to manage. No role.
There's literally nothing to do in this massive bloated 100gb game except fighting trash enemies without mechanics and running between the dimly lit cutscenes.
It's like they saw FFXIII's huge mistakes and said "now watch this"

They didn't design a video game world that you traverse or explore in any functional form
The areas don't connect to each other and you are presented with the worldmap when you want to run from area to area
FFXIV, their 15 year old MMO, handles basic area transitions more naturally than this 100 million dollar stink bomb
The jump button doesn't even function to climb onto things outside combat
They made drab uninspired 4K MMO backdrops, and just scattered useless trash everywhere

If you've never played Rebirth or even watched it then you might not see anything just by looking but there's well over a dozen elements to every single area and they are almost always unique.

Multiple layers of interconnected verticality exists across this field and can be reached through a combination of on foot and through the air traversal
Jump pads on the ground launch you up for Chocobo Gliding
Balloons keep you gliding while airborne
Moogle Emporium is tucked away up high and off in the distance. How do you get there?
Lifespring fountains tucked in little oases
Summon crystals down in caves
Gilgamesh side quest mini game in progressing difficulties placed throughout the ruins
Runways are placed at various elevations to glide back down from
Reaching various elevations requires puzzle solving and paying close attention to the level design and flight paths
Then, tucked away over there in a corner, is a little ol' tower you can climb to see more on your mini map
Then there are various fodder mobs are placed around the map to fight, often directly taken from the original games area
Then there are various mini boss challenge mobs are placed around the map to fight, also often directly taken from the original game
Then there are hidden Chocobo treasures and crafting recipe to dig up
Then there's a Yuffie side quest marker to do a Chocobo Gliding mini game challenge
Then there's multiple other characters' side quests, that all take you throughout the field naturally while building up the characters personalities and relationships

So what’s the Switch 2 intergrade version of Rebirth going to have as its bonus story?
Cid, Vincent, or one of the less developed characters gets more time?

This is the extent of the game design in FFXVI

You walk forward on the flat path without any traversal or exploration opportunity
You are met with a contrived obstacle (shallow river/bushes/fork path)
You walk around slowly in complete silence until you can access the area with the mob and then kill the trash in seconds/minutes
You get nothing for doing this, 10 bloody hides and 100 gil tops
There is no cool treasure for you to equip around the bend that's being guarded by a ferocious beast that you have to use a specific strategy to conquer
There is no Moogle to pop out and play a silly game with
There is nothing at all happening except for wandering around between mission markers at a brisk jog, watching the cutscenes where the characters are finally allowed to speak, and killing mobs on a completely flat plane
Sometimes you'll find the little side path that leads you off to somewhere that could be interesting if there were any content there. But there's never any content there
It's almost always an empty boss arena for a hunt that hasn't appeared yet and that is way too easy when you do fight it
Or a gate to a "side mission" area that hasn't triggered yet (just more cutscenes and trash mobs with no reward)

There is no "game" even happening. Nothing but a vessel for cutscenes. The definition of a movie game.
There is an offline action MMO happening perhaps, without any RPG/online/social/party elements or worthwhile treasures. It fucking sucks.
There's some technical complexity to your inputs in combat of course, and there's a pretty high ceiling to that complexity.
It can even be quite fun. But there's no strategic depth to the what/when/why of it
There is no form of unique player expressions to be had. You can't make unique builds. You equip the best "gear", you wait for cooldowns, and you do cuh-razy combos and dodge.
You won't even die. If you somehow manage to die, the game will give you a freebie potion refill when you revive so you won't die next time.

Single player game teams often make their timeless and flawed diamonds of video games as passion projects, that are still products you buy
Gold standards of game design and technology only ever really derive from these teams

Online/MMO/mobile/gacha teams make...uh. Very contrived 'games'. Usually born from the market itself
Designed to make as much money as they can off of very specific people that will play it endlessly

The issue with rebirth is that the overworld feels disconnected from the plot. Why SHOULD I do any of this? It doesn’t make sense. The original game wasn’t perfect either, but it also wasn’t filled with filler. There is no good reason for Cloud to fuck around on his chocobo for hours. There is no reason for Cosmo Canyon to have jump pads/ramps. There is no reason for us to collect the tower things. It’s padding for the sake of padding.

What I don't understand is why we're still seeing negative posts about Remake after a Switch 2 port has been confirmed

Now that the VII sloppers have finished their tirade,
we can finally get back to discussing actual Final Fantasy.

I've completed 90% of the optional content in Rebirth and I liked about 85% of it. Many of the side quests were clearly thematically related to the main ideas of the trilogy's story and VII. I consider that a success and I'm looking forward to the game improving in the third part.

I want to fucking emphasize, that the decision to make the game a corridor with empty MMO fields and 20 hours of cutscenes was not dictated by engine or any other development problems, like in the case of XV, it was a conscious choice of retards who made this interactive movie. We even know they wanted to add more cutscenes to the game, this was stated in one of the interviews. Luckily there was at least one adequate person in the development team who forbade it. I hope it was Takai because he's the only person from the lead team I trust since TLR was and still is a good game. Ultimaniac is an interesting survival mode. I liked it more than Kairos. You replay old missions, but there are no potions scattered around the levels, their number is initially strictly set from the very beginning of the mission. Weapons and equipment, except for accessories, also cannot be selected, chosen for you. In essence, this mode without mods is quite simple, a literal nothingburger. With mods on PC you can make it interesting and feel survival challenge.

Kairos Gate is a Bloody Palace (DMC) or Angel Slayer (Bayonetta) - style mode, but it only has 20 levels, which is fucking pathetic. It's closer to Angel Slayer, which is not a compliment. Between levels, you can buy upgrades to boost Clive's abilities and stats. Even though it sounds interesting on paper, it's actually pretty boring. I'm not him, but I am an oldfag who started playing FF with FFI on the NES. The first FF game that I didn't really like was XII, though I do kinda like it now. The second FF game that I didn't really like was XIII, and I still don't like it. The characters and story were horrible, but the combat was okay... but that was before I played X-2. Now that I've played X-2 I just don't think XIII has a place anywhere. The third FF game I didn't really like was XV, which I don't think I need to elaborate on. When I played the demo, I thought the "hold circle to win" gameplay would be changed in the full release, but sadly it was not.

XVI was actually the first time since X that I was not disappointed with a FF release, though I suppose part of this could be due to the fact that XIII and XV have significantly lowered the bar for Final Fantasy.

HOWEVER, I just made the connection that X-2 is actually "XIII, but good". Truthfully, that's what X-2 is. It's XIII, but it was made by Squaresoft rather than Square Enix, so it's actually good.

And! And and and and. Not only is X-2 "XIII, but good", with the addition of the Creature Creator, X-2 is also "XIII-2, but good". Incredible. What an amazing game. X-2 is "XIII and XIII-2, but better" and actually made by Squaresoft! It is truly the most underrated FF game of all time. It even has cuter and more likeable girls.

I like some things in X-2 it has a lot of cool stuff that can easily still work today in a new FF game.
But overall? To say it's actually better than the quintessential Final Fantasy V? No way. Can't do it.
FFXIII, AND the 40/40 FFXIII-2 as well? No way.
