Yes. You can pirate the DLC with creamapi (on steam), but the base roster has some good variety. This is a pretty good "baby's first (2D) fighting game". Compared to tekken and street fighter it is more mobile (but less mobile than older airdashers) so since you like platform fighters you will probably like it.

Strive damage is dealt in shorter combos with fewer hits, which means Guts matters a lot more
Air movement is much weaker which means jumping to escape the corner is significantly less rewarding, so people are more likely to mash to try to escape pressure and get counterhit
Strive pressure is heavily based around delay cancel strike/throw and frametraps starting from c.S, which just inherently are very rewarding because they build a lot of risk and do a ton of damage on counterhit. They were less good in the old games because if they misspaced their meaty c.S you could throw them on wakeup, Blitz and Slashback made predictable meaties risky, and backdashes were significantly better.
IB was much more rewarding making simple blockstrings and strike/throw much less powerful, being able to make yourself leave blockstun at three different timings if you IB, normal block or FD meant they couldn't just target the same tick throw timing every time, and makes punishing jump startup harder so low risk defensive play doesn't mean "take the throw."
The screen is smaller meaning midscreen combos turn into corner combos more often.
Somewhat related, no air teching means way less considerations when routing for damage, midscreen juggles were much more limited in the older games.
Strive RCs guarantee a nearly optimal combo from any hit if you spend meter because they can launch and reposition for you, and have no proration. +r RCs don't even guarantee a combo depending on the spacing and starter and Xrd RCs have 80% forced proration and even with the slowdown don't always give the best combos.
And part of it is just design philosophy. A lot of characters just don't get a lot of damage off even a c.S starter midscreen in the older games. Dizzy isn't really a low damage character in either game but even if you make yourself -20 in her face her best punish without meter is c.S>f.S>5H>2D>236S, even Strive Dizzy gets like 50% if you let her hit you with anything she wants.

oh also the lack of air tech and especially wallbreak promotes routing for max damage instead of worrying about preserving knockdown since everything at least soft knockdowns anyway and if you're going to the wall nothing matters except ending in a super because you can't really do corner oki, which is even more damage. Most characters can combo into supers in +r or Xrd to add a decent chunk of damage to the end of their combos, but almost never do because they'd rather just take a knockdown and save the meter for something else, Strive making it both the best way to deal damage and the best way to keep momentum means every combo is doing like 50 more damage because it gives the best of both worlds. I can't figure out why my Deal isn't coming out sometimes when I try to do IAD > j.K > j.236H after a super wallbreak as Johnny.
I know it's because my j.K is hitting them too low, so although I can cancel into Deal, the animation doesn't complete in time before Johnny lands.
The weird part is that I can sometimes get it, but I just don't know why.
I tried delaying j.K, but it hits too low.
So I tried doing j.K ASAP, but it ends up whiffing because the dummy hasn't yet gotten up.
Then I tried manually timing the j.K so it'd hit as late as possible in its active frames so I can cancel into Deal ASAP, still doesn't work.
The most consistent ways I've gotten it to work are either: Manually delaying the IAD, or doing sjIAD instead.

Remember to use faultless defense and then go for 2P or use the high body invul of 6P. Hammerfall armor starts on frame 5 so its decent after fding enough and you’re already holding downback. 1) Each combo or pressure string should only have one 50:50 in it, it is talmudic having to guess several 100 50:50 correct in one pressure string.
2) Combo capped at doing 50% of someones health, no need for some characters winning in 2-3 interactions.
3) Certain key moves uses some sort of meter, can even make a new meter for it, some characters like johny's misfinder makes the match have 0 interactions and must actually press one of their other buttons.
