The reason it's an issue is because the "alternative" has never actually existed. Sonic has always been this way. The "alternate" versions come from Archie, IDW, the movies. Outside of the videogames and moreover outside of Japan.
I take issue with people who act like it's a new direction when the reality is that it's always been this way.
Perhaps they miss the year 2008 when fans were comfortably arguing that Sonic is "boring" and that he had a "real personality in SatAM". Sonic has never even been a consistent character since day 1 because SoA and SoJ kept fighting over him and now there's dozens of Sonics but Sonic has been getting non-stop strays ever since the Dreamcast died and Nintendo fans constantly keep shitting on him which only got worse as the 2000s continued.
