Girls' Frontline 2's Basic Systems (Part 1): How the Character Attribute System Failed

As we all know, your game introduced the much-loved attribute counter-system as early as the second beta. Early on, there were also clones of the same character with different attributes, but this was later removed.

The character attributes themselves, after some modifications, were finally implemented in the public beta.

As a game with a gun theme—at least one that considers itself a gun theme and isn't a magical girl game—this attribute system is extremely abrupt and inconsistent. However, the underlying purpose is still valid. The system's intended effects include, but are not limited to: reducing character homogeneity, encouraging players to develop similar characters, and mitigating the overall rate of stat inflation.

Why should it? Because unfortunately, as of now (AK15 version), this system has not achieved any of these effects. It could even be said to have the opposite effect. Whether it's the Water Poison team's ability to kill everything regardless of weather conditions in the early stages of the rankings, or the AK15's lack of suppression at the end, these can be considered the final nail in the coffin for this system.

It can be said that the current system is... A complete failure.

The attribute system's implementation of the above items is actually very simple and crude, and they're closely linked.

To mitigate homogeneity, character skill sets are limited. If too many are released, similar skills will inevitably appear, making it easy to distinguish between characters.

This can be seen in Girls' Frontline 1. In the early stages of Girls' Frontline 1, many characters used universal skills, with only slight multipliers varying based on their star level. A simple comparison of their damage and fire rate revealed which character was stronger. However, Girls' Frontline 1's character acquisition cost was extremely low, and the development cost wasn't high, so XP training wasn't a big deal.

But in Girls' Frontline 2, Character are obtain via Mihoyo style gacha, and each character requires long-term development and real money. It's frustrating to see character B released one after the other and being superior to character A in all aspects. This solves the problem with the attribute system. While the two characters are extremely similar, they have different attributes, countering different bosses and having fundamentally different applications. Doesn't this make homogeneity less apparent?

Accordingly, players will need to repeatedly train similar characters with different attributes for different usage scenarios.

As for slowing down stat inflation, in a second-tier game, characters are always expected to become increasingly powerful. However, the attribute system can shift your expansion cycle from "next character" to "next round of characters." You can release one or two characters of each attribute before introducing the next round of expansion, which is also very beneficial.

Look at this system beautifully, isn't it? A slight sacrifice of immersion yields so many benefits.

But then there's the issue of your game.

First, the weakness system. Your game's attribute system isn't fundamentalist. In the Fireweed counter-cyclic system, there's no such thing as Attribute A countering Attribute B. Instead, each attribute has its own set of weaknesses.

Each attribute team typically has a support character capable of laying down ground tiles (some even go so far as to go even further, directly attacking weaknesses). Ground tiles continuously provide the target with weaknesses of their corresponding attribute, and a qualified support character can permanently place these tiles. This presents a problem.

If every team could permanently place weaknesses of their own attribute on the target in actual combat, making them equally vulnerable to counter-multiplication zones, then there's no point in distinguishing them; they'd all be dealt the same blow.

Some might argue: "I don't need to lay down ground tiles against a boss of my own attribute. I can just optimize the ground tile character."

This brings us to the second major issue: building teams with different attributes.

Ideally, the starting pool, where characters can be obtained at low cost, should contain enough characters to form the prototypes for teams with various attributes, or at least most attributes. For example, this should primarily consist of a small number of permanent or early-up five-star characters, supplemented by four-star permanent characters with corresponding attributes. Players can build their early teams based on the five-stars they draw first and the XP they gain. Early, low-pressure content, especially the main storyline, should minimize the impact of attributes. After reaching a certain point in the game, enemy attributes begin to differentiate, highlighting the advantages of teams with different attributes. This encourages players to refine their boxes, draw characters with corresponding attributes, and build teams with different attributes. This creates a healthy player growth curve.

However, this approach faces a problem in Girls Frontline 2: the initial pool is quite limited, especially with the limited number of purple cards. This is completely understandable. The high cost of 3D characters limits the size of the initial pool, making it difficult to provide prototypes for every team.

But being poor doesn't mean being broke. The problem is that your game seems to be quite careless with its precious starting pool slots, even squandering them. You haven't even considered allowing players to form an early team with these characters.
