But something tells me it's very important for providing a good backdrop or something. Lore is important to justify why you're currently doing what you're doing, in a zone or raid. That's the core crux of what lore needs to be.
Sure at the end of the day as far as gameplay is concerned, you're just chasing purple and occasionally orange items to make number go up.
But casuals do ultimately want a little more purpose than just number go up, so when the lore fumbles and casuals find it hard to feel invested in the narrative and the conflict currently going on, or care about the characters. You see more people get catty and call the writing out.
Indifference leads to boredom, dislike leads to outright finding something contemptable more than it actually is.

I like the general sort of setting rather than the specifics of the lore, I'll use the lore to help dictate/direct how my character might behave or react but I'm more than happy to step slightly outside the bounds of things tastefully if it seems interesting.

It is kind of hard to take the lore super seriously as I imagine everyone would have some sort of mental condition from constantly fighting world ending threats at this point.
