Lore is important to justify why you're currently doing what you're doing, in a zone or raid. That's the core crux of what lore needs to be.
Sure at the end of the day as far as gameplay is concerned, you're just chasing purple and occasionally orange items to make number go up.
But casuals do ultimately want a little more purpose than just number go up, so when the lore fumbles and casuals find it hard to feel invested in the narrative and the conflict currently going on, or care about the characters. You see more people get catty and call the writing out.
Indifference leads to boredom, dislike leads to outright finding something contemptable more than it actually is.

Covenants were fine unless you were a sweat, and they got fixed halfway through the expansion. They were also way better than the HoA / HoA gear. Torghast was better than islands. Warfronts were dogshit. Classes were fucking aids with the GCD changes and pruning. The only good raid was Battle for Dazalor, the rest were ok (eternal palace / nyalotha) to bad (uldir / crucible).

The dungeons were pretty good though, and the zones are S-tier. 8.2 is also one of the best patches they've ever done, if not the best.

Alliance Pandaren was always a bigger mistake than Horde Blood Elves.

You're talking nonsense. The night elves in WoW were incredibly nerfed. Half of their population became neutral, indifferent to what the Horde was doing, and they were forbidden from using everything they used in Warcraft 3.

Pandaren were an Alliance race in Warcraft RPG, as far as I know.
In reality, the Horde Pandarens are much more stupid; upon arrival, they literally encounter a crazy dictator who throws them into the arena to fight.
And then, at the end of MoP, his elite troops almost kill their leader.
