I feel like chapter 2 is still the best chapter after thinking about it. Everything content-wise to come out was amazing chapter. It feels a lot longer than the rest of the chapters. Chapter 1 is kinda bare-bones and doesn't really do a good job of hooking you in. The Susie/Lancer team-up is charming and funny, but kinda grows old. Plus The King's Castle is really bland (both in appearance and gameplay)
Trying to recommend this game to someone who A) hasn't played Undertale or B) doesn't play RPGs is a hard-sell sometimes.
I would love it if the dev and art teams went back and spruced it up. But they probably want to finish the final 3 chapters and be done with this project at this point.

I played Morrowind first, but didn't really get into it. Granted, I was also five year old. I got way more into oblivion when it came out, game indeed being very mindblowing back then. Still, having gone back to both games as a adult, I do think Morrowind is the superior game despite it's flaws. Oblivion's fairly bland and generic fantasy style is one of it's strong points but also holds it back.

Chapter 1 doesn't set up anything, it's a self contained story about not having choices. There was a reason it wasn't even called chapter 1 when it released.
Characters are 1 dimensional and have extremely predictable arcs, and the story itself is also extremely simple. King is bad because he's bad, ralsei is good because he's good and the entire thing is basically just a framing device for susie to be tsundere.
Chapter 3 relies on previous chapters, but it also does way more with the characters both established and new. Characters have motivations which actually make sense, and it feels like they're genuinely acting in their own interest rather than only to justify the existence of a game

You know mine. Gameplay, that the game literally tells you there's a pacifist ending before you fight a real enemy, and the recruit system and how you lose the whole enemy for one attack too many, basically giving you no in-character reason not to do it.

As for the story, you know what I'm about. The nonsense with Kris and the Soul, how you're still expected to play as Kris after it is made clear he is the enemy. And of course the lack of any actual conversation to heart.png(apparently that counts as a character to this fanbase) to top that off. An abysmal plot point that I wouldn't have dared implement into any product I expect people to immerse themselves into(like, I dunno, a ROLE-PLAYING GAME). Oneshot did this correctly. ...what? I understand saying its a self contained story but its very clearly important set up for the rest of the game. You cant just start with Chapter 2 and be perfectly in the know the whole way through, it's still the basis for the rest of the game's story to build off of. Are you telling me Jevil mentioning Queen isnt set up for her appearance in the next chapter? Or that Ralsei taking off his hat isnt setting up a mystery on what the fuck this whore goat's real deal is?
Sure the characters are pretty one dimensional in it but they're still very interesting to watch, having susie actively leave the party and become an antagonistic force is really cool and it lets us watch her pal around with Lancer which leads to some of the best moments in the game (Creating the thrash machine, the fight agaisnt her and lancer, and her breakdown in the dungeon later). Though I have to contest the "Ralsei is good because hes good" part, now we can safely say he isnt a villain sure but he still had that "So that's why, kris..." moment in the dungeon that made all of us question his motives.

Morrowind guild quests to me are still fun mostly because there is just enough dynanism in the mechanics to allow for some intresting problem solving. Some of the fighter guild quests really show that off, especially if you are also a member of the thieves guild.
Oblivion doesn't have that as much outside the stealth quests. But when it does, the result is pretty stunning. Even just adding sone degree of radiant AI really livens up a basic "kill random NPC" quest.

That has nothing to do with the fact that his entire character in ch1 is "he's a good person", or even anything really. The thread doesn't go anywhere, even in chapter 1.

Yes, the shelter which is repeatedly referenced in other chapters and is clearly the gateway to the currently ongoing plot. The entirety of chapter 4 happens exclusively because undyne gets kidnapped and they need to find shelter codes (and so they go to the church and then Noelle's house).
Compare that to chapter 1 where literally nothing done in it influences the outcomes of future chapters, except that susie and kris are invited to the library. They could have skipped the entire dark world and chapters 2, 3 and 4 would have played out exactly the same. That's what it means to be unimportant.

The reason this happens is because chapter 1 is clearly written to be self contained, and so doesn't attempt to establish persistent arcs which might not have had closure. It's a flaw in retrospect, in isolation I think chapter 1 is worse only because it's so flat and derivative
