How did COTW crash so hard? This is truly a mystery to me. I mean, let's be real here, the game isn't bad by any means, it's pretty solid, the graphics aren't outstanding but they're alright, definitely not a dealbreaker to most people, Fatal Fury is also a name that people recognize, not as much as Street Fighter, but it's still a classic of the old era, definitely a lot more recognizable than Guilty Gear and it was released in an era where fighting games are thriving. What the fuck went wrong? Was it truly Ronaldo and Salvatore? They did kill my hype a little, but eventually I didn't even care about them anymore. Or maybe people thought the game was too complex? I personally don't think it's any harder than SF6, which is the most popular fighting game by far. Is there any way this game can succeed? It should have at least Strive's numbers, it's much better than that game.

My Qanba obsidian doesn't want to connect to my PC or console anymore, I think its dead, its been my partner for 8 years, don't know how to feel about it. Do I try to repair it or is it time for a new controller.

Guilty Gear was gorgeous-looking anime property that was the first franchise to do good-looking 3D graphics in a 2D fighter, made by a developer who had become known as "that company that makes the really good-looking fighters" after DBFZ. Whereas SNK is unknown company for all except hardcore fighting game players and Fatal Fury is probably the least known of their mainline properties. Pre-Strive, Xrd had more participants than any SNK game in most tourneys.
Putting all that aside, the game ultimately failed because it is an ugly-looking game with no real hook, no franchise-power and the gameplay isn't incredible out-of-this-world experience to make up for it. SF and MK can get away with releasing ugly fucking games because their franchise reputation makes up for it, SNK can't. Just compare Nen Impact and DNF Duel: both are awful 8ing kusoges, but one of them had a peak of 12 000 while the other didn't break 1000 despite being based on a more popular franchise.
Obviously the awful first beta didn't help, many people wrote the game off as having unplayable online and assumed it wouldn't be fixed due to SNK's extremely bad reputation regarding similar issues with KoFXV.
