back in the day of MMPR, everyone was pretty generic teenagers with attitude and no notable backstories or character traits besides "they do fit things, martial arts and work the local school drives for good things". in came the green ranger with Tommy, who basically kicked all the ranger's asses because he was given his powers by Rita, before getting freed of control, going through redemption after losing his powers and becoming White Ranger, etc. Tommy was the first actual protag with character and the archetype for troubled anti-heroes and sixth ranger tropes for the entire rest of the franchise, easily becoming the most popular even long before he was the most recurring ranger for a good while. and because of how they handled original elements of his story compared to the sentai source material, he was also very easy to keep around outside of the JP footage by simply having his powers absent again.
