For real though, if I want to make a 3d game, what's the best engine?
Unreal 5 is bloated and slow
Godot is garbage (and slow)
Unity changes their stupid licensing every other month and their editor is spyware

I'm not trying to make fucking rdr2 here, but I want my games to be at least somewhat pretty and have more than a dozen triangles in each model. Vid related, it's something I cooked in UE for my game long ago. But even in UE it's going to become too slow in poorfags computers. Especially as blueprints are so slow, and I'm too stupid for C++.

how big should my sprites be for non pixel art at HD res?
this is roughly the window size with general proportions for the characters and field
>>534589024>But even in UE it's going to become too slow in poorfags computersThat's because you don't know what the fuck you're doing. Godot is faster than UE at pure rasterized rendering, but it doesn't do anything for you automatically outside of very basic automatic LOD which you still need to tweak by hand.
>>534589024>not 2d where the engine performance doesnt even matterYou've never tried to run a rpg maker game in 4k.

>>534589982Who's making all the assets and sounds?
>>534590240>a game not yet released for a reasonYou can download it on steam and see exactly what the limits of the engine are.
>>534589024>Especially as blueprints are so slowI should also add that blueprints have fuck all to do with performance in a scene like that, CPUs basically haven't changed in a decade, most games are still single threaded and single threaded performance in a poorfag CPU is basically the same as a top of the line CPU. To reiterate, you don't know what the fuck you're doing.
>>534589982>godot does have optimization issues in the 3d spaceThe only current "issue" would be that there's no off-the-shelf solution for asset streaming, so if your entire scene doesn't fit into VRAM, you'll have to write your own solution. Only UE has something for this in world partitioning. Unitycucks need to pay for something out of the asset store or also write their own, which most people end up doing anyways.

Turning "glow" on reduces the fps by about 40 fps or more and I'm no expert but I don't think a bloom shader should reduce the fps that much. There's lots of little things in godot just like that.
>>534591271you're an idiot. go back to unreal.

>>534591707You’ve got it.
>>534591742>Works on my machine.Don't care. I have another issue. When is godot going to allow proper GLSL shaders without an addon? huh? huh? WHERE ARE THE GLSL SHADERS?
>>534591043>there's no off-the-shelf solution for asset streamingThis is what is killing me, the VR environment itself takes like 3GB of VRAM just to load and then godot takes a bunch, 6GB of VRAM used and only 1GB of it is texture memory. Most of my time is spent trying to figure out how to reuse as many pieces of a model as possible while still being able to texture it in substance painter which requires unique UV's. My workflow has me building a model twice, once to figure out the shape, then reduce it to tiling pieces and then rebuild it after painting.
>>534591891Just convert it? It's nearly the same. Godot's shaders need to work on more platforms, including web, so it won't be identical.
>>534591438It's a game that looks worse than half life 2 episode two, there's barely any lighting going on, everything is muddish, the textures are low res, the models are low poly, the world is small, shadows look shitty (and it was everything at ultra or max settings) and yet it runs only at 120fps on a RTX 3060 which is pretty basic nowadays.
So this......... is the power of Godot? heh.... nice flagship game you got there. The vitrine of Godot's game engine is equivalent to hl2 e2.

And even if you only use one like me, what is the size and resolution of your monitor? Do you feel that it helps you with game dev, and why??
Me:
>one monitor
>24" 1440p

>>534611704Depends what kind of work you're doing. If you need reference materials a lot, second screen can be a godsend. Then again it can also be a huge distraction. Personally I use two, main one 27" 1440p and the secondary 27" 1080p .
>>534612148>thing Japan:O
In all seriousness it really wouldn't really be that interesting. The Nazis actually had an ideology behind their conquest, i.e. the whole blood and soil thing about making a European empire. The Japanese didn't have any of that, they just wanted more land for the sake of expansion and took advantage of the war to achieve that. A future Axis-ruled Asia wouldn't be different enough from modern day Asian to make it interesting. You'd have Japanese speaking cities on the mainland rather than Korean and Chinese ones. That's about it.
>>534612148That's why I said "the man in the high castle", while it's not exactly the most realistic axis victory scenario I found it quite interesting, where the world was divided between the third reich and the japanese empire. If I ever get a budget maybe I'll make that game.

But I am 100% glad I picked a FOSS workflow.
I was lucky I made the right calls by picking Krita, LMMS, Blender and Godot.

So I've been working on my game for about a year but I have a question that is stumping me - do you guys compose your own music or are you planning on hiring other people to compose it or what? Because I think I can cope or adapt to literally every other element of dev work but I am realizing I am trash at composition. I've only come up with two songs and they are totally mid. I've been putting it off this entire time and using placeholder music for the emotion or style I think I want, but I have to face it eventually. I'm wondering if this is a case where I just need to knuckle down and practice or come to terms with my limitations and seek help. Thanks.
>>534616830Look up FLStudio tutorials.

>>534617119I think LMMS is nice.

>>534615907Just have one cheevo that unlocks at the very start of the game. That way cheevo-autists get their precious 100% and you can focus on mlre important stuff.

>>534617639ok, if you're a complete newbie, will be a bit dificult to explain everything.
My advice is to start first with a music theory fundamentals class.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VvKeiwddPI
You can find dozens of videos explaining music theory.
My advice is to learn and understand the basics, and just try to compose a lot.
https://dn790006.ca.archive.org/0/items/pdfy-_OKTX_2lKsXA_zvN/Counterpoint%2C%20Fux%2C%20by%20Alfred%20Mann.pdf
I learned music composition from Fux book, which is a bit old, but teaches perfectly how to compose music in the baroque style.
My advice is to just try to compose 500 songs of 32 bars, one after another, and focusing on trying to understand how a note of a certain lenght works with another.
My advice is to learn to put chords in the piano roll, and use them as ghost notes to put random notes of random lenghts.
After enough tries, your brain will discover that some notes lenghts go well in the lower register and another lenghts in the upper register.
But music is not that dificult, you only need to compose hundreds of songs.
>>534618119I'm reluctant to provide much information, so all I can do is vaguepost about things I am working on. Not comfortable with /agdg/ knowing about my game. Maybe I shouldn't post at all.
>>534617596I mean I'm okay with trying anything and I'm okay with a lot of experimental music choices, I just A)have no confidence in myself to make it and B)dont really know how to seek out anyone who could compose it. I assume twitter or linked in would help me find people. I'd be more than happy to share information with you but I dont want to give you false promises and I dont expect anyone to help me for free - my game still is very rough and outside of sketchbooks and my notes I dont have much "personality" to guide a composer at this state. And I dont want to cause people work that wont go anywhere.
Sorry if this sounds weird or rambly, I havent discussed my game dev work at all with anyone outside my immediate family and close friends. But this is something I feel especially lost on and I dont think I can do it alone.

>>534618253I'm not a complete newbie when it comes to music, I'm playing the bass and learnt the piano when I went to school, although composing is a completely different monster. I just need to wrap my head around the software.

>>534618392I'm glad you like the skybox but it doesn't fit the kind of game I'm trying to make. It makes my game look like a Doom clone when I'm aiming for N64. I already fixed the issue and made a skybox with more colors. Thanks for the acknowledgment.

>>534618776Thank you for your help, I am not ready to do that yet but I am making real tangible progress on my game and I will get to that point eventually. I should probably come here more in general since it will motivate me to being productive, early on I really struggled with feeling like an imposter or a fraud since so much of my work in the first half of the year was drawing out character art and maps. And this music stuff has been weighing on me for weeks now. But I really appreciate your words and I'm sorry if I sound annoying. I just dont want to embarrass myself in front of so many game devs who are probably way more knowledgable and far along than I am. Thanks again.
I sometimes dread music theory, but then remember that guys like Tim Follin made absolute bangers in their teens on much more primitive hardware than I have access to. How hard can it be?

Not everyone that replies "nice" to progress is a hugcrab either, it just indicates there's nothing interesting or of note in the progress so all you can say is "nice" because progress is nice.

Since my new character models have a lot of new features compared to my old ones:
>new character models with separate heads and bodies that can be dynamically assembled onto a common skeleton during runtime to allow for any character/class combination
>Custom shader that allows me to apply a color palette to any generic class outfit so characters have a consistent look regardless of what class they're in
>animation layering to handle held equipment instead of having it all on one layer with all weapons just having their own full body animations
I can't simply plug my new models into my game the way I had my old ones, there's a lot of additional code to get them fully functional. I have the beginning of the process started, they can be assembled & deployed to the map during runtime with the correct models, color palette, equipment, and playing the correct animations for the equipment.
I'm also taking this as an opportunity to do a big refactor of my code related to the units themselves because a lot of it is really old and has gone through a bunch of jank half-revisions and a lot of disparate functionality is consolidated into one class so as I'm re-implementing old systems to work with the new character's I'm also splitting up my main "Unit" class into a bunch of more manageable classes with clearer roles/responsibilities.
I'm also fixing some of my Data structures that were just bad. For example, before I wasn't making a very clear distinction between a Unit's Immutable "Base Stats" that they will always have when first recruited and their "Current stats" after they've been deployed as an actual character on the map, which had caused some debugging headaches in the past.
One of the fruits of this is the "Debug Roster" I show off in this webm. It allows me to easily configure the stats, class, inventory, etc. of a roster of units I can use when testing levels from the editor. I had a system for this before but it was way more jank.

>>534675169>you have no idea who your audience even isYou should. If you don't, then you're not making a game that people want to play. There is a tremendous amount of unmet demand and underserved audiences in the gaming world. Pick one and make a game for them.
One of the biggest mistakes that I see amateur gamedevs make is thinking that they can promote their way into getting people to play their game. That simply isn't true. There are plenty of games that people already want to play, and if you make one of those, all you need to do is let people know about your game and they will come and play. If they don't already want to play your game, then you need to spend a lot more time, effort, and money into convincing them that they do. That is something only bigger studios and publishers have the resources to do. That requires millions upon millions of dollars of advertisement. Smaller indies typically do not and need to work to meet existing demand, rather than trying to generate their own demand.
