Marisa doesn't use raw dr much in neutral since it's hard for her to take advantage of the plus frames unless she gets all the way up in their face. She's quite reliant on it for oki though due to not being able to threaten command grab outside the corner without it. If you get her spacing and ranges down she has some of the biggest rewards for proper whiff punishes and Gladius is a good tool to enforce some amount of space control. However her buttons are slow and so is her walkspeed so you have to be somewhat on point to make that kind of playstyle work. Lower level Marisa's just forego it and bumrush forward at any opportunity just like any other character.

In MKX the 3 variations at least (for the most part) felt like unique playing styles, like Kano having a defensive, zoner variation/mixup damage variation/grappler variation. It varied in swung too much in quality. Like there were three general types of character frameworks and they had characters who were good becauae they made it work, or were lacking/set back by it.
